Benzene exposure assessment of printing workers treating petroleum-based cleaner in South Korea.

This study was conducted to check whether benzene is contained inside the petroleum-based cleaning agent used in the printing industry and measure whether it is actually exposed to the air. Benzene was analyzed inside the cleaning agent and air exposure evaluation was done by area sampling. Risk assessment was performed using the CHARM (Chemical Hazard Risk Management) technique. Most products contained benzene based on the results obtained from this study. As a result of collecting air samples and checking whether the workers were exposed to benzene actually, benzene was detected in three samples. As a result of the risk assessment, most of printing businesses scored more than four points. Benzene was detected in all petroleum-based cleaning products. In addition, benzene was detected in some of air samples. Considering the fact that even small exposure level of benzene is dangerous to worker health and most of the printing businesses in South Korea operate on a small scale with fewer than five employees so the health management system is poor, it is necessary to prepare appropriate measures to prevent work diseases provoked by benzene exposure.

Isolation and Characterization of Efficient Active Compounds Using High-Performance Centrifugal Partition Chromatography (CPC) from Anti-Inflammatory Activity Fraction of in South Africa.

is a brown seaweed, which is abundantly distributed in South Africa. This study investigated an efficient approach using high-performance centrifugal partition chromatography (HPCPC), which has been successfully developed for the isolation and purification of phlorotannins, eckmaxol, and dieckol from the ethyl acetate fraction of (EEM). We evaluated EEM for its inhibitory effect against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in zebrafish embryos. The separation of eckmaxol and dieckol from samples of EEM using HPCPC was found to be of high purity and yield under an optimal solvent system composed of n-hexane:ethyl acetate:methanol:water (2:7:3:7, ///). To evaluate the anti-inflammatory efficacy of EEM containing active compounds, zebrafish embryos exposed to LPS were compared with and without EEM treatment for nitric oxide (NO) production, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, and cell death two days after fertilization. These evaluations indicate that EEM alleviated inflammation by inhibiting cell death, ROS, and NO generation induced by LPS treatment. According to these results, eckmaxol and dieckol isolated from brown seaweed could be considered effective anti-inflammatory agents as pharmaceutical and functional food ingredients.

Quantitative Analysis of Anti-N and Anti-S Antibody Titers of SARS-CoV-2 Infection after the Third Dose of COVID-19 Vaccination.

We quantitatively analyzed SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels in patients after two doses of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine and the third BNT162b2 booster. We obtained 255 serum samples from 149 healthcare workers 1 and 4 months after the third dose. Of the 149 participants, 58 (38.9%) experienced COVID-19 infection during the 4-month study period, with infection occurring 7-62 days before the second blood draw. Total antibody titers against the anti-spike (anti-S) and anti-nucleocapsid (anti-N) proteins of SARS-CoV-2 were measured using Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 S and Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 assays (Roche), respectively. The median anti-S antibody titer in the non-infected groups at 4 months after the third dose was significantly decreased compared to that at 1 month after the third dose (from 17,777 to 3673 U/mL, < 0.001). The infected group showed higher median anti-S antibody titers at 4 months (19,539 U/mL) than the non-infected group (3673 U/mL). The median anti-N antibody titer in the infected group at 4 months after the third dose was a 5.07 cut-off index (79.3% positivity). Anti-N antibody titers in the infected group were correlated with the number of days after SARS-CoV-2 infection. These data provide useful information for determining quarantine strategies and fourth vaccination requirements.

Characteristics of Escherichia coli Urine Isolates and Risk Factors for Secondary Bloodstream Infections in Patients with Urinary Tract Infections.

Escherichia coli is responsible for more than 80% of all incidences of urinary tract infections (UTIs). We assessed a total of 636 cases of patients with E. coli UTIs occurring in June 2019 in eight tertiary hospitals in South Korea for the traits of patients with E. coli UTIs, UTI-causative E. coli isolates, and risk factors associated with bloodstream infections (BSIs) secondary to UTIs. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was conducted using the disc diffusion method, and the genes for extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and plasmid-mediated genes were screened by using PCR and sequencing. Multilocus sequence typing and virulence pheno-/genotyping were carried out. A total of 49 cases developed BSIs. The E. coli urine isolates primarily comprised sequence type 131 (ST131) (30.0%), followed by ST1193, ST95, ST73, and ST69. Three-quarters of the ST131 H30Rx isolates possessed the -like gene, whereas 66% of H30R and 50% of H41 isolates possessed the -like gene. All the ST1193 isolates showed biofilm formation ability, and three-quarters of the ST73 isolates exhibited hemolytic activity with high proportions of , , and positivity. The prevalence of the ST131 H41 sublineage and its abundant CTX-M possession among the E. coli urine isolates were noteworthy; however, no specific STs were associated with bloodstream invasion. For BSIs secondary to UTIs, the gene was likely identified as a UTI-causative E. coli-related risk factor and urogenital cancer (odds ratio [OR], 12.328), indwelling catheter (OR, 3.218), and costovertebral angle tenderness (OR, 2.779) were patient-related risk factors. Approximately half of the BSIs caused by E. coli are secondary to E. coli UTIs. Since the uropathogenic E. coli causing most of the UTIs is genetically diverse, understanding the risk factors in the E. coli urine isolates causing the BSI is important for pathophysiology. Although the UTIs are some of the most common bacterial infectious diseases, and the BSIs secondary to the UTIs are commonly caused by E. coli, the assessments to find the risk factors are mostly focused on the condition of patients, not on the bacterial pathogens. Molecular epidemiology of the UTI-causative E. coli pathogens, together with the characterization of the E. coli urine isolates associated with the BSI secondary to UTI, was carried out, suggesting treatment options for the prevalent antimicrobial-resistant organisms.

Brain Amyloid Index as a Probable Marker Bridging Between Subjective Memory Complaint and Objective Cognitive Performance.

Background: The association between types of subjective memory complaint (SMC), poor objective cognitive performance, and brain Aβ deposition have been poorly understood. We investigated the association between types of SMC and objective global cognitive performance, then assessed whether this association is mediated by the brain amyloid prediction index (API).

Methods: In total, 173 non-demented older adults [63 cognitively normal (CN) and 110 mild cognitive impairment (MCI)] underwent comprehensive clinical assessments. Objective global cognitive performance and brain amyloid index were measured using the total score (TS) of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease neuropsychological battery and API, respectively. In total, four items of SMC from the subjective memory complaints questionnaire (SMCQ) (SMCQ1: a feeling of memory problem; SMCQ2: the feeling of worse memory than 10 years ago; SMCQ3: the feeling of worse memory than others of similar age; or SMCQ4: the feeling of difficulty in everyday life) in global memory function were assessed.

Results: In non-demented and participants with MCI, SMCQ3-positive and SMCQ4-positive groups were associated with decreased TS. In participants with MCI, the SMCQ3-positive group was associated with increased API, and API was associated with decreased TS, but the SMCQ4-positive group did not. In addition, the association between the SMCQ3-positive group and poor TS disappeared when API was controlled as a covariate, indicating that API has a mediation effect.

Conclusion: The present findings suggest that SMC, a feeling of worse memory performance than others in a similar age group, in the older adults without dementia is associated with poor objective cognitive performance increased brain amyloid index.

Syringaresinol derived from berry attenuates oxidative stress-induced skin aging via autophagy.

Background: In aged skin, reactive oxygen species (ROS) induces degradation of the extracellular matrix (ECM), leading to visible aging signs. Collagens in the ECM are cleaved by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Syringaresinol (SYR), isolated from berry, has various physiological activities, including anti-inflammatory action. However, the anti-aging effects of SYR via antioxidant and autophagy regulation have not been elucidated.

Methods: The preventive effect of SYR on skin aging was investigated in human HaCaT keratinocytes in the presence of HO, and the keratinocyte cells were treated with SYR (0-200 μg/mL). mRNA and protein levels of MMP-2 and -9 were determined by real-time PCR and Western blotting, respectively. Radical scavenging activity was researched by 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. LC3B level was assessed by Western blotting and confocal microscopy.

Results: SYR significantly reduced gene expression and protein levels of MMP-9 and -2 in both HO-treated and untreated HaCaT cells. SYR did not show cytotoxicity to HaCaT cells. SYR exhibited DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities with an EC value of 10.77 and 10.35 μg/mL, respectively. SYR elevated total levels of endogenous and exogenous LC3B in HO-stimulated HaCaT cells. 3-Methyladenine (3-MA), an autophagy inhibitor, counteracted the inhibitory effect of SYR on MMP-2 expression.

Conclusion: SYR showed antioxidant activity and up-regulated autophagy activity in HO-stimulated HaCaT cells, lowering the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 associated with skin aging. Our results suggest that SYR has potential value as a cosmetic additive for prevention of skin aging.

Female reproductive factors are associated with the risk of newly diagnosed bipolar disorder in postmenopausal women.

Changes in the levels of female sex hormones are associated with mood disorders in middle-aged women. This study investigated the association between female reproductive factors and the development of newly diagnosed bipolar disorder (BD). We used a South Korean nationwide medical records database. Postmenopausal women aged 40 or older who underwent health examinations were identified and followed for the occurrence of BD. We identified female reproductive factors including the age at menarche and menopause, parity, history of breastfeeding, oral contraceptive (OC) use, and hormone therapy (HT), and investigated their association with the occurrence of newly diagnosed BD. During an average of 8.32 years (SD 0.83) of follow-up, the incidence of BD was 0.50 per 1000 person-years in postmenopausal women. Compared to women with menopause at an age of 40 years or younger, those with menopause at an age of 45 years or older showed decreased risks of BD. Compared to women who had never breastfed, those who had breastfed for more than 12 months showed a decreased risk of BD. Compared to women who never received HT, those who received HT showed an increased risk of BD in a time-dependent manner. Among postmenopausal women, later menopause and breastfeeding for more than one year were associated with a decreased risk of BD occurrence, and receiving HT was associated with an increased risk.

Molecular Epidemiology of Adenoviral Keratoconjunctivitis in Korea.

Human adenoviruses (HAdVs) are a major cause of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis. We investigated the types of adenoviruses responsible for the recent epidemic of keratoconjunctivitis in Korea. From January to November 2019, 218 conjunctival swab samples were collected from patients clinically suspected as having adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis. Genotyping targeting of adenovirus capsid hexon genes was performed using PCR and sequencing. Of the 218 samples collected, 128 (58.7%) were positive for the adenovirus genes by PCR, and 126 samples were successfully genotyped. Adenovirus type 8 (HAdV-D8) was the most common type (67.5%), followed by HAdV-D64 (11.1%), HAdV-D37 (9.5%), HAdV-B3 (5.6%), HAdV-D53 (4.0%), HAdV-E4 (1.6%), and HAdV-D56 (0.8%). Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis cases were the most frequent in July and August 2019, which were mainly caused by type 8. Phylogenetic analyses revealed little genetic distance among adenoviruses of the same type detected in our study. Our results provide basic data for further studies of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis.

A Novel Antiviral Protein Derived from : Type I Interferon-Dependent Antiviral Signaling and Its Pharmacological Potential.

Pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins produced in plants play a crucial role in self-defense against microbial attacks. Previously, we have identified a novel PR-1-like protein (OPRP) from and examined its pharmacologic relevance and cell signaling in mammalian cells. Purified full-length OPRP protein significantly increased toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4)-dependent expression levels of genes such as inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and CD80. We also found that small peptides (OPRP2 and OPRP3) designed from OPRP remarkably upregulated myxovirus resistance (Mx1), 2'-5' oligoadenylate sythetase (OAS), and interferon (IFN) α/β genes in mouse splenocytes as well as human epithelial cells. Notably, OPRP protein distinctively activated STAT1 phosphorylation and ISGF-3γ. Interestingly, OPRP2 and OPRP3 were internalized to the cytoplasm and triggered dimerization of STAT1/STAT2, followed by upregulation of type I IFN-dependent antiviral cytokines. Moreover, OPRP1 successfully inhibited viral (Pseudo SARS-CoV-2) entry into host cells. Taken together, we conclude that OPRP and its small peptides (OPRP1 to 3) present a new therapeutic intervention for modulating innate immune activity through type I IFN-dependent antiviral signaling and a new therapeutic approach that drives an antiviral state in non-immune cells by producing antiviral cytokines.

Antihypertensive Effects of IGTGIPGIW Peptide Purified from : p-eNOS and p-AKT Stimulation in EA.hy926 Cells and Lowering of Blood Pressure in SHR Model.

The aim of this study was to assess the potential hypertensive effects of the IGTGIPGIW peptide purified from alcalase hydrolysate (HA) for application in the functional food industry. We investigated the antihypertensive effects of IGTGIPGIW in vitro by assessing nitric oxide production in EA.hy926 endothelial cells, which is a major factor affecting vasorelaxation. The potential vasorelaxation effect was evaluated using 4-amino-5-methylamino-2',7'-difluorofluorescein diacetate, a fluorescent stain. IGTGIPGIW significantly increased the expression of endothelial-derived relaxing factors, including endothelial nitric oxide synthase and protein kinase B, in EA.hy926 cells. Furthermore, oral administration of IGTGIPGIW significantly lowered the systolic blood pressure (183.60 ± 1.34 mmHg) and rapidly recovered the diastolic blood pressure (143.50 ± 5.55 mmHg) in the spontaneously hypertensive rat model in vivo. Our results demonstrate the antihypertensive activity of the IGTGIPGIW peptide purified from and indicate its suitability for application in the functional food industry.

Mesonephric-like Adenocarcinoma of the Uterine Corpus: Comprehensive Analyses of Clinicopathological, Molecular, and Prognostic Characteristics With Retrospective Review of 237 Endometrial Carcinoma Cases.

Background/aim: Uterine mesonephric-like adenocarcinoma (MLA) is a rare malignant tumor of the female genital tract.

Patients And Methods: We reviewed 237 endometrial carcinoma cases and investigated the clinicopathological and molecular characteristics of uterine MLA.

Results: We found that 3.0% (7/237) of the endometrial carcinoma cases were MLAs. Compared to endometrial endometrioid carcinoma, MLA showed larger tumor size, deeper myometrial invasion, increasingly advanced-stage disease, and more frequent lymphovascular space invasion. All MLAs exhibited architectural diversity, compactly aggregated small tubules, eosinophilic intraluminal secretions, overlapped and angulated nuclei, scant cytoplasm, and presence of spindle cells. All the MLAs expressed at least two mesonephric markers. All except one MLA harbored activating Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog mutations. All patients with MLA developed postoperative metastases. MLA had the lowest progression-free survival rate among different histological types of endometrial carcinoma.

Conclusion: Uterine MLA is a highly aggressive gynecological malignancy, showing unique morphological and molecular features, frequent recurrences and metastases, as well as poor prognosis.

A Randomized, Double-Blind, Active-Control, Noninferiority, Multicenter, Phase 4 Study to Evaluate the Efficacy and Safety of Esomeprazole/Sodium Bicarbonate 20/800 mg in Patients with Nonerosive Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

Background/aims: Efficacy of proton pump inhibitors is limited in patients with nonerosive reflux disease (NERD). The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the efficacy and safety of esomeprazole with sodium bicarbonate and esomeprazole alone.

Methods: This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, active-controlled, noninferiority comparative study. A total of 379 patients with NERD were randomly allocated to receive either Esoduo (esomeprazole 20 mg with sodium bicarbonate 800 mg) or Nexium (esomeprazole 20 mg) once daily for 4 weeks from January 2019 to December 2019. The patients had a history of heartburn for at least 2 days in the week before randomization as well as in the last 3 months and no esophageal mucosal breaks on endoscopy. The primary endpoint was a complete cure of heartburn at week 4. The secondary and exploratory endpoints as well as the safety profiles were compared in the groups at weeks 2 and 4.

Results: A total of 355 patients completed the study (180 in the Esoduo group and 175 in the Nexium group). The proportions of patients without heartburn in the entire 4th week of treatment were not different between the two groups (33.33% in the Esoduo group and 35% in the Nexium group, p=0.737). There were no significant differences in most of the secondary and exploratory endpoints as well as the safety profiles.

Conclusions: Esoduo is as effective and safe as Nexium for managing typical symptoms in patients with NERD (ClinicalTrial.gov identifier: NCT03928470).

Humoral and Cellular Responses to BNT162b2 as a Booster Following Two Doses of ChAdOx1 nCov-19 Determined Using Three SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Assays and an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay: A Prospective Longitudinal Study in Healthcare Workers.

Data on humoral and cellular responses to BNT162b2 as a booster dose, following two doses of ChAdOx1 nCov-19 vaccine, have seldom been reported. The aim of this study was to assess the positivity rates of three representative antibody assays targeting total, IgG, and neutralizing antibodies, and an interferon-γ release assay (IGRA), and to determine the longitudinal changes in quantitative antibody titers after each vaccination. A total of 1027 samples were collected from healthcare workers. The number of participants after the booster dose was 153, and they all completed a questionnaire on adverse reactions. All antibody assays showed 100.0% positivity at 1 month after booster vaccination. The median antibody titers of the assays were significantly increased compared with those after the second dose (22.1-fold increase for Roche total antibody, 14.0-fold increase for Abbott IgG, and 1.1-fold increase (97.5% inhibition) for GenScript neutralizing antibody). Cellular responses determined using the IGRA were positive in 92.8% of the participants. Most participants (72.5%) reported mild adverse reactions. Correlations between the three antibody assays and IGRA were weak or negligible, indicating a difference between humoral and cellular responses. Overall, our study provides information about booster vaccine strategies and laboratory settings, which could subsequently contribute to the control of the spread of coronavirus disease 2019.

Integrative analysis to explore the biological association between environmental skin diseases and ambient particulate matter.

Although numerous experimental studies have suggested a significant association between ambient particulate matter (PM) and respiratory damage, the etiological relationship between ambient PM and environmental skin diseases is not clearly understood. Here, we aimed to explore the association between PM and skin diseases through biological big data analysis. Differential gene expression profiles associated with PM and environmental skin diseases were retrieved from public genome databases. The co-expression among them was analyzed using a text-mining-based network analysis software. Activation/inhibition patterns from RNA-sequencing data performed with PM-treated normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK) were overlapped to select key regulators of the analyzed pathways. We explored the adverse effects of PM on the skin and attempted to elucidate their relationships using public genome data. We found that changes in upstream regulators and inflammatory signaling networks mediated by MMP-1, MMP-9, PLAU, S100A9, IL-6, and S100A8 were predicted as the key pathways underlying PM-induced skin diseases. Our integrative approach using a literature-based co-expression analysis and experimental validation not only improves the reliability of prediction but also provides assistance to clarify underlying mechanisms of ambient PM-induced dermal toxicity that can be applied to screen the relationship between other chemicals and adverse effects.

Influence of sintering temperatures on microstructure and electrochemical performances of LiNiCoAlO cathode for high energy lithium ion batteries.

In this study, we present a method for synthesizing Ni-rich LiNiCoAlO (NCA) with a high-energy cathode material by the solid-phase method. The sintering temperature plays a very important role in the electrochemical performance of the LiNiCoAlO since it affects the crystallinity and structural stability. Therefore, various sintering temperatures (660 °C/690 °C/720 °C/750 °C/780 °C/810 °C) are studied to get optimum electrochemical performances. The electrochemical performance of LiNiCoAlO sintered at 720 °C shows the highest discharge capacity of 217.48 mAh g with excellent Coulombic efficiency of 87.84% at 0.1 C. Moreover, the LiNiCoAlO sintered at 720 °C exhibits excellent rate-capability (181.1 mAh g at 2.0 C) as well as superior cycle stability (95.4% after 80 cycles at 0.5 C). This is because optimized sintering temperature leads to good structural stability with low cation disorder and residual lithium content.

Differences in clinical outcomes according to the time interval between the bridge to surgery stenting and surgery for left-sided malignant colorectal obstruction.

Background: Self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) placement is commonly used as a bridge to surgery (BTS) for left-sided malignant colorectal obstruction (MCO). However, the optimal time interval between BTS stenting and surgery for left-sided MCO is unclear, and the results of previous studies are conflicting. This study aimed to determine the differences in clinical outcomes according to the time interval between BTS stenting and surgery in left-sided MCO.

Methods: Data from 594 patients who underwent SEMS placement for MCO between January 2009 and December 2018 were reviewed. Among them, 148 patients who underwent SEMS placement as BTS treatment and curative surgery were enrolled. The enrolled patients were divided into three groups according to the interval between BTS stenting and surgery: group 1 (interval ≤2 weeks), group 2 (interval 2-3 weeks), and group 3 (interval >3 weeks).

Results: Group 2 and 3 patients underwent significantly higher rates of laparoscopic surgery than those in group 1 (83.7, 81.0 vs. 53.2 %, respectively; P=0.003, P=0.003, respectively). Also, rates of stoma formation directly after resection were significantly higher in group 1 compared to groups 2 and 3 (21.3 vs 2.3, 6.9%, respectively; P=0.008, P=0.043, respectively). Bridging interval had no effect on SEMS-related complications, resection-related complications, 90-day mortality, permanent stoma formation, 3-year disease-free survival, and 3-year overall survival.

Conclusions: A bridging interval of > 2 weeks between BTS stenting and surgery for left-sided MCO is preferable for lower stoma formation rates and higher rates of laparoscopic approach operation, with no difference in short-term and long-term outcomes including complication, mortality, and survival.

Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma of the Uterus: Clinicopathological and Molecular Characteristics.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal tumor mainly affecting adolescents and young adults, with a predilection for the deep soft tissues of extremities. ASPS arising in the female genital tract is extremely rare and poses a significant diagnostic challenge. We herein present two rare cases of ASPS, one occurring in the uterine corpus of a 27-year-old woman, and the other in the uterine cervix of a 10-year-old girl. We described the clinical, histological, immunophenotypical, and molecular characteristics of primary uterine ASPS. We performed immunostaining for transcription factor E3 (TFE3), human melanoma black 45 (HMB45), melan-A, desmin, pan-cytokeratin (CK), paired box 8 (PAX8), CD10, hormone receptors, and S100, and targeted RNA and DNA sequencing using commercially available cancer gene panel. In case 1, a 27-year-old woman was referred to our hospital after laparoscopic uterine myomectomy at an outside hospital. Imaging studies revealed a residual tumor in the uterine corpus. In case 2, a 10-year-old girl underwent surgical excision for the cervical mass and was diagnosed as having ASPS. She was then referred to our hospital for further management. Both patients received total hysterectomy. Histologically, they displayed characteristic histological features of ASPS. Strong nuclear TFE3 immunoreactivity, periodic acid-Schiff-positive, diastase-resistant intracytoplasmic rod-shaped crystalloids or granules, and the identification of - fusion confirmed the diagnosis of ASPS in both cases. Lack of immunoreactivity for HMB45, melan-A, desmin, pan-CK, PAX8, and S100 excluded the possibility of perivascular epithelioid cell tumor, clear cell sarcoma, metastatic renal cell carcinoma, granular cell tumor, and paraganglioma. Our observations can help pathologists make an accurate diagnosis of uterine ASPS and suggest that pathologists should include primary uterine ASPS in the differential diagnosis of uterine mesenchymal tumors.

Ovarian Masses in Patients With Breast Cancer.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the characteristic findings of computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to discriminate metastasis from primary ovarian tumors in patients with a history of breast cancer.

Methods: This retrospective study enrolled consecutive 72 patients with a history of breast cancer who underwent surgical confirmation of an ovarian mass detected on CT or MRI (primary ovarian tumors, n = 66; metastases, n = 6). Two independent readers analyzed the grade of solid portions of the ovarian mass using a 5-point scale on CT or MRI. A predominantly cystic mass was defined as a solid grade of 1 to 2. Cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) and the initial stage of breast cancer were also investigated.

Results: The proportions of predominantly cystic masses were significantly different between metastases (0% for both readers) and primary ovarian tumors (59% for reader 1 and 53% for reader 2, P < 0.05). For masses of solid portion grades 3 to 5, CA 125 was significantly higher for malignant epithelial tumors than for the other tumors (P < 0.001), and the initial stage of breast cancer was significantly higher for metastases than for the other tumors (P < 0.001), respectively.

Conclusions: In patients with a history of breast cancer, predominantly cystic masses detected on CT or MRI seem to be primary ovarian tumors. For the other masses, knowledge of CA 125 and initial breast cancer stage may help in the differential diagnosis.

Effects of Dietary Thraustochytrid sp. and Other Omega-3 Sources on Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, and Meat Quality of Broilers.

Background: Looking for alternative omega-3 sources in broiler nutrition, microalgae began to get attention. We suspected that might play a similar role as other omega-3 sources that have been used before.

Methods: 20 g/kg s powder (SP), salmon oil (SO), and flaxseed oil (FO) in each of the three treatment groups were supplemented in the basal diet (CON), and productive performance, carcass traits, and thigh meat quality of broilers were evaluated.

Results: There was a significantly higher weight gain in the SP treatment compared to the other groups, but no difference was found in feed intake and feed conversion ratio. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance values increased during storage in all the treatments but were significantly lower for SP than for SO and FO after 7 days of storage. Among the ω-3 fatty acids (FAs), α-linolenic acid increased the most in the FO treatment, eicosapentaenoic acid increased the most in the SO treatment, and docosahexaenoic acid increased the most in the SP treatment in thigh meat, reflecting the FA composition of the lipid source diets.

Conclusions: We suggested that all the dietary ω-3 FA sources could improve the FA composition of chicken meat and our results indicated the possibility to supplement broiler diets with 2% level of SP, SO, and FO as ω-3 FA sources to produce meat with a good nutritional quality for consumer's health benefits.

High Receptor-interacting Serine/Threonine-protein Kinase 3 (RIP3) Expression Serves as an Independent Poor Prognostic Factor for Triple-negative Breast Carcinoma.

Background/aim: Receptor-interacting serine/threonine-protein kinase 3 (RIP3) is a key component related to tumor necrosis factor-dependent necroptosis. RIP3 has been known to be a predictive biomarker in many types of carcinomas. We aimed to investigate whether RIP3 expression is correlated with clinicopathological characteristics and the outcomes of patients with breast carcinoma.

Patients And Methods: We performed immunostaining for RIP3 and analyzed the association of RIP3 expression status with the clinicopathological characteristics and survival of 203 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast.

Results: High RIP3 expression was significantly correlated with lymph node metastasis and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positivity. In patients with triple-negative breast carcinoma (TNBC), high RIP3 expression was an independent prognostic factor for disease-free survival (DFS). RIP3-high TNBC showed the lowest DFS rate.

Conclusion: High RIP3 expression is associated with aggressive clinical behavior of breast carcinoma. Our data suggest that RIP3 serves as an independent prognostic factor in TNBC.

Comparison of the Pharmacokinetics of CT-P13 Between Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Background: We aimed to compare trough infliximab levels and the development of antidrug antibody (ADA) for 1 year between Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) patients who were biologic-naive, and to evaluate their impact on clinical outcomes.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, observational study. Biologic-naive patients with moderate to severe CD or UC who started CT-P13, an infliximab biosimilar, therapy were enrolled. Trough drug and ADA levels were measured periodically for 1 year after CT-P13 initiation.

Results: A total of 267 patients who received CT-P13 treatment were included (CD 168, UC 99). The rates of clinical remission (72% vs. 32.3%,P<0.001) at week 54 were significantly higher in CD than in UC. The median trough drug level (μg/mL) was significantly higher in CD than in UC up to week 14 (week 2, 18.7 vs. 14.7,P<0.001; week 6, 12.5 vs. 8.6,P<0.001; week 14, 3.4 vs. 2.5,P=0.001). The median ADA level (AU/mL) was significantly lower in CD than in UC at week 2 (6.3 vs. 6.5,P=0.046), week 30 (7.9 vs. 11.8,P=0.007), and week 54 (9.3 vs. 12.3,P=0.032). Development of ADA at week 2 [adjusted odds ratio (aOR)=0.15,P=0.026], initial C-reactive protein level (aOR=0.87,P=0.032), and CD over UC (aOR=1.92,P<0.001) were independent predictors of clinical remission at week 54.

Conclusion: Infliximab shows more favorable pharmacokinetics, including high drug trough and low ADA levels, in CD than in UC, which might result in better clinical outcomes for 1-year infliximab treatment in CD patients.

Impact of COVID-19 on Antimicrobial Consumption and Spread of Multidrug-Resistance in Bacterial Infections.

The spread of COVID-19 pandemic may have affected antibiotic consumption patterns and the prevalence of colonized or infected by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. We investigated the differences in the consumption of antibiotics easily prone to resistance and the prevalence of MDR bacteria during the COVID-19 pandemic (March 2020 to September 2021) compared to in the pre-pandemic period (March 2018 to September 2019). Data on usage of antibiotics and infections caused by methicillin-resistant (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant (VRE), carbapenem-resistant (CRE), carbapenem-resistant (CRAB), and carbapenem-resistant (CRPA) were obtained from hospitalized patients in four university hospitals. The consumption of penicillin with β-lactamase inhibitors (3.4% in ward, 5.8% in intensive care unit (ICU)), and carbapenems (25.9% in ward, 12.1% in ICU) increased during the pandemic period. The prevalence of MRSA (4.7%), VRE (49.0%), CRE (22.4%), and CRPA (20.1%) isolated in clinical samples from the ward and VRE (26.7%) and CRE (36.4%) isolated in clinical samples from the ICU were significantly increased, respectively. Meanwhile, only the prevalence of CRE (38.7%) isolated in surveillance samples from the ward increased. The COVID-19 pandemic is associated with increased consumption of antibiotics and has influenced the prevalence of infections caused by MDR isolates.

Comparison of Peripheral Biomarkers and Reduction of Stress Response in Patients With Major Depressive Disorders vs. Panic Disorder.

Alteration in stress response seems to affect the development of psychiatric disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether baseline peripheral biomarkers could predict the reduction of stress response among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD). Patients with MDD ( = 41) and PD ( = 52) and healthy controls (HC, = 59) were selected and regularly followed up with five visits for 12 weeks. The severity of stress at every visit was assessed using the Stress Response Inventory (SRI), and peripheral biomarkers were measured by blood tests at baseline and 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, C-reactive protein (CRP), adiponectin, and leptin levels were analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Reduction of stress response was defined as the difference in SRI score between baseline and 12 weeks divided by the baseline score. SRI scores were significantly ( < 0.0001) higher in patients with MDD and PD than in HC at every visit after adjusting for variables. In multivariable linear regression, adiponectin levels at baseline were significantly associated with reduction of stress response in patients with PD. When adiponectin increased 1 mg/l, stress response decreased 0.781 points (β = -0.781, S.E. = 0.220, = 0.001). Among the subscales of SRI, somatization had a moderate negative correlation with adiponectin levels ( = -0.469). There was no significant association between baseline peripheral biomarkers and reduction of stress response in patients with MDD. Our study showed an inverse association between baseline adiponectin levels and stress response changes in patients with PD, but not in patients with MDD. Thus, differentiated approaches for assessing and treating stress responses of patients with PD and MDD might be helpful. Larger and longitudinal studies are necessary to establish the role and mechanism of action of adiponectin in regulating stress responses in PD.

Bullying, Psychological, and Physical Trauma During Early Life Increase Risk of Major Depressive Disorder in Adulthood: A Nationwide Community Sample of Korean Adults.

Background: There is an association between early life traumas and the development of depression in adults. Few studies have used nationwide population-based samples to investigate whether the type of early life trauma differentially influences the risk of developing depression.

Methods: Major depressive disorder and early life trauma were assessed using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (K-CIDI) for DSM-IV psychiatric disorder and a questionnaire for early life trauma in the Korean Epidemiological Catchment Area Study in 2016. A total of 4,652 participants were included in the final analysis. This study evaluated the effect of the type and frequency of reported early life trauma on the risk of developing MDD and the association between reported early life trauma and differential symptoms of MDD.

Results: Individuals with reported early life trauma had a 3.7-fold increased risk of MDD. The risk of MDD was associated with bullying trauma (odds ratio (OR) = 1.847, = 0.005) after adjusting for age, gender, marriage, job, and education years. The risk of MDD was increased as the types of reported early life traumas increased.

Conclusion: Bullying trauma during early life represents a risk factor for MDD, especially in individuals exposed to multiple traumas in early life.

Association Between Copper and Global Cognition and the Moderating Effect of Iron.

Background: Despite the known association between abnormal serum copper levels and Alzheimer's disease (AD) or cognitive decline, the association between copper, iron, and cognition remains poorly investigated. We examined the association between serum copper levels and global cognition measured using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in older adults with normal copper levels. We also explored the moderating effect of iron on this association.

Methods: The study enrolled 99 non-demented adults between 65 and 90 years of age. All the participants underwent comprehensive clinical assessments and serum copper measurements. Global cognitive performance was measured by the MMSE. All copper levels were within the normal range and were stratified into three categories: < 87 (low), 87-98 (medium), and > 98 (high: used as a reference category) μg/dL.

Results: Serum copper level (as a continuous variable) was significantly associated with MMSE score ( = 0.065, 95% confidence interval = 0.023-0.108, = 0.003). Low serum copper group showed significantly decreased MMSE score compared to high copper one ( = -2.643, 95% confidence interval = -4.169 to -1.117, < 0.001), while middle copper category had no difference ( = -1.211, 95% confidence interval = -2.689 to 0.268, = 0.107). There was a significant low serum copper ×iron interaction effect on the MMSE score ( = 0.065, 95% confidence interval = 0.016-0.114, = 0.010). Subgroup analyses showed that low serum copper was significantly associated with a low MMSE score in the low-iron ( = -4.174, 95% confidence interval = -6.607 to -1.741, = 0.001) but not high-iron subgroup ( = -0.721, 95% confidence interval = -2.852 to 1.409, = 0.495).

Conclusion: Our findings from non-demented older adults suggest that a low serum copper level within the normal range was associated with AD or cognitive decline and this is moderated by iron. To prevent AD or cognitive decline, clinicians need to pay attention to avoiding low serum copper and iron levels, even within the clinical normal range.

Dissecting gonadoblastoma (DGB) of the ovary, a recently described terminology, defines a unique distribution of neoplastic germ cells. Here, we report a case of incidental DGB coexistent with an atypical endometriotic cyst occurring in a 23-year-old woman. The ovarian cyst was lined by endometrial-like glands and stroma. Some glands displayed nuclear enlargement and hyperchromasia, and abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm with occasional intracytoplasmic hemosiderin and mucin vacuoles. The neoplastic germ cells resembled those of ovarian dysgerminoma and were diffusely distributed within the ovarian stroma, which was stretched around the wall of the endometriotic cyst. These cells were arranged in nests and cords, possessing clear cytoplasm and centrally located round nuclei with prominent nucleoli and occasional mitoses. Chromosomal analysis revealed a 46,XX karyotype. We describe the clinical, histological, immunophenotypical, and genetic features of ovarian DGB incidentally detected in the ovarian cystectomy specimen of a woman with normal female karyotype.

Extraskeletal Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma of the Uterus.

Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is an uncommon malignant mesenchymal tumor with an aggressive behavior. Diagnoses of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma are established based on histomorphological, immunohistochemical, and molecular findings. Only one case of extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (EMC) of the uterus has been reported. This article presents the second case of primary uterine EMC, occurring in a 33-year-old woman. We describe the histological and immunophenotypical features of EMC. Our observations will help pathologists and clinicians perform accurate histological diagnoses of uterine EMC and plan appropriate treatment strategies for this rare tumor.

Local and Metastatic Relapses in a Young Woman with Papillary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix.

Papillary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare histological type of cervical carcinoma whose biological behavior has not been fully established. A 33-year-old woman with an exophytic cervical mass underwent radical hysterectomy and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection. Histological examination of the tumor revealed numerous papillary fronds lined by atypical stratified squamous cells, resembling high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or urothelium. She was diagnosed with stage IB1 PSCC. Three months postoperatively, a 5.7 cm vaginal stump mass was detected. She received chemoradiotherapy, which helped her achieve a complete response. However, nine months postoperatively, she developed pelvic lymph node metastases. We present a rare case of recurrent cervical PSCC in a young woman. PSCC of the uterine cervix can recur rapidly within just a few months and become aggressive, as in the present case.

Clinical Features and Long-term Prognosis of Crohn's Disease in Korea: Results from the Prospective CONNECT Study.

Background/aims: The prospective Crohn's Disease Clinical Network and Cohort study is a nationwide multicenter cohort study of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) in Korea, aiming to prospectively investigate the clinical features and long-term prognosis associated with CD.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with CD between January 2009 and September 2019 were prospectively enrolled. They were divided into two cohorts according to the year of diagnosis: cohort 1 (diagnosed between 2009 and 2011) versus cohort 2 (between 2012 and 2019).

Results: A total of 1,175 patients were included, and the median follow-up duration was 68 months (interquartile range, 39.0 to 91.0 months). The treatment-free durations for thiopurines (p<0.001) and anti-tumor necrosis factor agents (p=0.018) of cohort 2 were shorter than those of cohort 1. Among 887 patients with B1 behavior at diagnosis, 149 patients (16.8%) progressed to either B2 or B3 behavior during follow-up. Early use of thiopurine was associated with a reduced risk of behavioral progression (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR], 0.69; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.50 to 0.90), and family history of inflammatory bowel disease was associated with an increased risk of behavioral progression (aHR, 2.29; 95% CI, 1.16 to 4.50). One hundred forty-one patients (12.0%) underwent intestinal resection, and the intestinal resection-free survival time was significantly longer in cohort 2 than in cohort 1 (p=0.003). The early use of thiopurines (aHR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.23 to 0.51) was independently associated with a reduced risk of intestinal resection.

Conclusions: The prognosis of CD in Korea appears to have improved over time, as evidenced by the decreasing intestinal resection rate. Early use of thiopurines was associated with an improved prognosis represented by a reduced risk of intestinal resection.
