Systematic Placement of the Enigmatic Southeast Asian Genus and an Updated Phylogeny of Tribe Pogostemoneae (Lamiaceae Subfamily Lamioideae).

(Lamiaceae) is a monotypic genus within the subfamily Lamioideae and has a sporadic distribution in subtropical mountains of southeast Asia. Although recent studies have greatly improved our understanding of generic relationships within Lamioideae, the second most species-rich subfamily of Lamiaceae, the systematic position of within the subfamily remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the phylogenetic placement of the genus using three datasets: (1) a 69,276 bp plastome alignment of Lamiaceae; (2) a five chloroplast DNA region dataset of tribe Pogostemoneae, and (3) a nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region dataset of Pogostemoneae. These analyses demonstrate that is a member of Pogostemoneae and sister to the monotypic genus . In addition, generic-level phylogenetic relationships within Pogostemoneae are also discussed, and a dichotomous key for genera within Pogostemoneae is provided.

Laparoscopic Versus Open Appendectomy for Appendicitis in Pregnancy: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Objectives: The clinical safety, efficacy and feasibility of laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) compared with open appendectomy (OA) in pregnancy are still controversial. Herein, we are aiming to compare the clinical outcomes of LA and OA in patients with acute appendicitis during their pregnancy.

Materials And Methods: This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies comparing laparoscopic and OA in pregnancy identifying using PubMed, Web of science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Ovid and Scopus. Two independent reviewers extracted data on surgical complication, fetal loss, preterm delivery, hospital stay, Apgar score in both groups.

Results: Twenty-seven studies with total of 6497 patients (4464 in open and 2031 in laparoscopic group) were included. LA was associated with lower rate of wound infection [odds risk (OR)=3.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.77-5.56, P<0.0001] overall complications (OR=2.15, 95% CI: 1.47-3.14, P<0.0001) and shorter hospitalization (mean difference=0.72, 95% CI: 0.43-1.02, P<0.00001) compared with open group. LA was in a lower risk for 5-minute Apgar score (mean difference=0.09, 95% CI: 0.02-0.17, P=0.01) group than open group. No difference was found regarding preterm delivery between 2 groups. LA was associated with higher fetal loss (OR=0.57, 95% CI: 0.41-0.79, P=0.0007) compared with open surgery. However, laparoscopy was not associated with increased fetal loss after 2010 (OR=0.74, 95% CI: 0.44-1.24, P=0.26) compared with open group.

Conclusions: LA in pregnancy seems to be feasible with acceptable outcome, especially in patients with early and mid-trimester period, with sophisticated hands and experienced centers.

Critical review of natural iron-based minerals used as heterogeneous catalysts in peroxide activation processes: Characteristics, applications and mechanisms.

Recently, an increasing number of works have been reported about iron-based materials applied as catalysts in peroxide activation processes to degrade pollutants in water. Iron-based catalysts include synthetic and natural iron-based materials. However, some synthetic iron-based materials are difficult to scale up in the practical applications due to high cost and serious secondary environmental pollution. In contrast, natural iron-based minerals are more available and cheaper, and also hold a great promise in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation. In this review, we classify different natural iron-based materials into two categories: iron oxide minerals (e.g., magnetite, hematite, and goethite,), and iron sulfide minerals (e.g., pyrite and pyrrhotite,). Their overview applications in peroxide activation processes for pollutant degradation in wastewaters are systematically summarized for the first time. Moreover, the peroxide activation mechanisms induced by natural minerals, and the influences of reaction conditions in different systems are discussed. Finally, the application prospects and existing drawbacks of natural iron-based minerals in the peroxide activation processes for wastewater treatment are proposed. We believe this review can shed light on the application of natural iron-based minerals in peroxide activation processes and present better perspectives for future researches.

Stable 5-GHz fundamental repetition rate passively SESAM mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber lasers.

A stable passively mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber laser with a fundamental repetition rate of up to 5 GHz is demonstrated, which, to the best of our knowledge, is the highest repetition rate for 1.5 μm semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) mode-locked Er-doped silica fiber (EDF) lasers. A segment of commercially available EDF with a net gain coefficient of 1 dB/cm is employed as gain medium. The compact Fabry-Pérot (FP) cavity features a fiber mirror, namely multiple-layer dielectric films (DFs) directly coated on end facet of a passive fiber ferrule, enabling a short cavity length of 2 cm configured. The mode-locked oscillator operates at 1561.0 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 62.1 dB, whose average power is boosted to 27 mW by a single-mode Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and spectral bandwidth is broadened form 0.69 nm to 1.16 nm with a pulse width of 3.86 ps. The fiber laser shows excellent spectral stability without conspicuous wavelength drifting for 3 hours. Moreover, the basic guidelines of selecting SESAM for high repetition rate passively mode-locked fiber lasers is given.

(Apocynaceae), a new species from south-western Yunnan, China.

, a new species of Apocynaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Results from phylogenetic analyses, based on combined DNA fragments of the nuclear ribosomal external transcribed spacer (ETS), intergeneric transcribed spacer (ITS) and three plastid DNA fragments (, and ), showed that the new species was nested within a clade, including species distributed in the subtropical foothills of the Himalayas and the Tibet-Sichuan Plateau. Morphologically, the new species can be distinguished from its close relatives by its pyriform and slightly pubescent leaves, as well as the 4-flowered inflorescences.

Prevalence and genomic investigation of Salmonella isolates recovered from animal food-chain in Xinjiang, China.

Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen worldwide, causing serious cases of morbidity and mortality due to the consumption of contaminated foods. Animal-borne foods were considered the main source of transferring Salmonella to humans; however, route surveillance by genomic platforms along the food-chain is limited in China. Here, we proceeded to the application of whole genome sequencing in the epidemiological analysis of Salmonella isolated along the food-chain in Xinjiang, China. A total of 2408 samples were collected from farms, slaughterhouses, and markets, and subjected to the isolation of Salmonella strains. 314 (13.04%) of the samples were positive for Salmonella. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance was conducted by the broth dilution method using 14 antimicrobial agents belonging to ten classes for all 314 isolates. A selection of representative 103 isolates was subjected to whole-genome sequencing for understanding the Salmonella diversity, including serovars, antimicrobial and virulence genes, plasmid types, multi-locus sequence types, and allelic types. We found that S. Agona was the dominant serovar and O:4(B) was the dominant serogroup. The dominant genotype was ST13 and each serovar has a unique MLST pattern. Plasmids prediction reported Col(MGD2)_1 and Col(Ye4449)_1 as the dominant plasmids, in addition to the detection of IncFII(S)_1 and IncFIB(S)_1 carried by all S. Enteritidis isolates. Importantly, virulence genes prediction showed the presence of cdtB gene encoding typhoid toxins, spv genes, and pef gene cluster encoding fimbriae in the genomes of S. Indiana and S. Enteritidis. Phenotypic antimicrobial resistance identified 92.04% of the sampled isolates as multi-drug resistance (MDR), with high resistance to tetracycline (78.03%; 245/314), amoxicillin/ clavulanic acid (75.80%; 238/314), and ampicillin (70.70%; 222/314). Together, we firstly reported the prevalence of MDR Salmonella isolates harboring critical virulence factors transmission via animal-borne food-chain in Xinjiang, hence route surveillance by whole-genome sequencing platform could facilitate recognition and project early warning for the emerging MDR clones along the food-chain.

in Qinghai-Tibet plateau: population structure and confirmation of additional endemic areas.

Echinococcus shiquicus is currently limited to the Qinghai–Tibet plateau, a large mountainous region in China. Although the zoonotic potential remains unknown, progress is being made on the distribution and intermediate host range. In this study, we report E. shiquicus within Gansu and Qinghai provinces in regions located not only around the central areas but also the southeast edge of the plateau and describe their genetic relationship with previous isolates from the plateau. From 1879 plateau pikas examined, 2.39% (95% CI 1.79–3.18) were infected with E. shiquicus. The highest prevalence of 10.26% (4.06–23.58) was recorded in Makehe town, Qinghai province. Overall the prevalence was marginally higher in Qinghai (2.5%, CI 1.82–3.43) than in Gansu (2%, CI 1.02–3.89). The cox1 and nad1 genes demonstrated high and low haplotype and nucleotide diversities, respectively. The median-joining network constructed by the cox1–nad1 gene sequences demonstrated a star-like configuration with a median vector (unsampled haplotype) occupying the centre of the network. No peculiar distinction or common haplotype was observed in isolates originating from the different provinces. The presence of E. shiquicus in regions of the southeast and northeast edges of the Qinghai–Tibet plateau and high genetic variation warrants more investigation into the haplotype distribution and genetic polymorphism by exploring more informative DNA regions of the mitochondrial genome to provide epidemiologically useful insight into the population structure of E. shiquicus across the plateau and its axis.

Extracting Biomedical Entity Relations using Biological Interaction Knowledge.

Discovering relations of cross-type biomedical entities is crucial for biology research. A large amount of potential or indirect connected biological relations is hidden in millions of biomedical literatures and biological databases. The previous rules-based and deep learning approaches rely on plenty of manual annotations, which is laborious, time-consuming and unsatisfactory. It is necessary to be able to combine available annotated gene databases, chemical, genomic, clinical and other types of data repositories as domain knowledge to assist the extraction of biological entity relations from numerous literatures. Under this scenario, this paper proposes BioGraphSAGE model, a Siamese graph neural network with structured databases as domain knowledge to extract biological entity relations from literatures. Our model combines both biological semantic features and positional features to improve the recognition of relations between distant entities in the same literature. The experiment results show that BioGraphSAGE achieves the best F1 score among other relation extraction models on smaller annotated samples. Moreover, the proposed model can still maintain a F1 score of 0.526 without using annotated training samples.

The value of melanoma inhibitory activity and LDH with melanoma patients in a Chinese population.

Abstract: Malignant melanoma is a highly malignant tumor originating from the melanocytes of the neural crest, which is prone to metastasis and has a poor prognosis. Previous research demonstrated that melanoma inhibitory activity (MIA) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) could serve as serum markers in malignant melanoma and indicate prognosis in the Caucasian race. Researchers suspected that both MIA and LDH could prompt the prognosis of malignant melanoma in the Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the value of MIA and LDH in the prognosis of acral malignant melanoma.From January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2017, in Jiangsu Province, 44 acral malignant melanoma patients with complete data were chosen from the clinic. The LDH levels were extracted from their clinical data, and MIA levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. 8 paired advancing samples before and after metastasis were examined. 22 health donors were matched to the patient group. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of MIA and LDH were drawn to determine acral malignant melanoma tumorigenesis and metastasis and finally got the cut-off value. Cumulative survival was illustrated with the Kaplan-Meier plot, and factors were compared using the Log-rank test.Compared with age-matched healthy donors, MIA was significantly high in patients (P < .001). Moreover, serum MIA was significantly higher in III-IV stage patients than I-II stage patients (P < .001). However, there was no such association between LDH and melanoma stage and risk. Further study indicated that the MIA cut-off > 914.7pg/mL predicted disease progression with 86.4% specificity and 95.5% sensitivity. In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, MIA levels were independent risk factors for long-term mortality of acral malignant melanoma patients.It concluded that the quantification of MIA in the serum should be performed as a general standard of care in patients at risk of developing metastatic melanoma.

Therapeutic potential of iron chelators on osteoporosis and their cellular mechanisms.

Iron is an essential trace element in the metabolism of almost all living organisms. Iron overload can disrupt bone homeostasis by significant inhibition of osteogenic differentiation and stimulation of osteoclastogenesis, consequently leading to osteoporosis. Iron accumulation is also involved in the osteoporosis induced by multiple factors, such as estrogen deficiency, ionizing radiation, and mechanical unloading. Iron chelators are first developed for treating iron overloaded disorders. However, growing evidence suggests that iron chelators can be potentially used for the treatment of bone loss. In this review, we focus on the therapeutic effects of iron chelators on bone loss. Iron chelators have therapeutic effects not only on iron overload induced osteoporosis, but also on osteoporosis induced by estrogen deficiency, ionizing radiation, and mechanical unloading, and in Alzheimer's disease-associated osteoporotic deficits. Iron chelators differently affect the cellular behaviors of bone cells. For osteoblast lineage cells (bone mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblasts), iron chelation stimulates osteogenic differentiation. Conversely, iron chelation significantly inhibits osteoclast differentiation. These different responses may be associated with the different needs of iron during differentiation. Fibroblast growth factor 23, angiogenesis, and antioxidant capability are also involved in the osteoprotective effects of iron chelators.

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have attracted considerable attention from researchers because of their distinct structures and characteristics, especially in maximizing atomic utilization and elevating the intrinsic catalytic activity. More recently, SACs have been becoming a burgeoning area of the environmental field and are extensively applied to remove various refractory organic pollutants. This review summarizes the emerging synthetic and characterization strategies of SACs and analyzes their development tendency. Besides, the application of SACs in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs, e.g., catalysis of HO, activation of persulfates and photocatalysis) is discussed. The excellent removal of pollutants depends on the fast generation of reactive oxygen species (SO, OH, O, and O). The advantages of SACs in AOPs are summarized, and constructive opinions are put forward for the stability and activity of the catalyst. Finally, the opportunities and challenges faced by SACs and its future development direction in the AOPs catalytic field are proposed.

Prevalence, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Molecular Characterization of Isolated from Animals, Meats, and Market Environments in Xinjiang, China.

has been recognized as an important foodborne pathogen. However, knowledge about the epidemiology and genetic characteristics of in the meat production chain from farm to market is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic characteristics of in animal samples isolated from Xinjiang province farms and farmer' markets, by determining staphylococcal protein A () repeat region and virulence factor typing, and by assessment of antimicrobial resistance. Out of 1324 samples, 128 (9.7%) were positive for , 26 (2.0%) of them were identified as methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and 88 (6.6%) of them were identified as vancomycin-resistant (VRSA). Antimicrobial resistance was determined using the disk diffusion method. isolates showed resistance to penicillin G (98.4%), clarithromycin (69.5%), erythromycin (69.5%), vancomycin (68.8%), and tetracycline (67.2%). A total of 80.4% of isolates showed resistance to three or more antimicrobial classes. PCR was used to detect ten virulence genes such as the enterotoxin (, , and ), hemolysin ( and ), clumping factor (), and fibronectin-binding proteins A and B ( and ). Our study showed that isolates harbored two or seven virulence genes. All strains encode and , and half of them encode and enterotoxin genes. The typing results showed that the 128 isolates were grouped into 32 types. The main types were t127 (22.7%), t2592 (12.5%), t437 (10.9%), and t2616 (10.9%). Notably, isolates of t437 type accounted for 46.2% of the MRSA. Our data indicate that meats in the slaughterhouse and farmers' markets were contaminated with . virulence genes and types were diverse, and its antibiotic resistance was serious. The presence of MRSA and VRSA represents potential public health risks and warrants further investigation regarding the driving factors of such resistance and their transmission to humans.

Characterization of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli isolated from Cattle and Sheep in Xinjiang province, China, using whole-genome sequencing.

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an important food-borne pathogen capable of causing severe gastrointestinal diseases in humans. Cattle and sheep are the natural reservoir hosts of STEC strains. Previously, we isolated 56 STEC strains from anal and carcass swab samples of cattle and sheep in farms and slaughterhouses. In this study, we performed whole-genome sequencing of these isolates and determined their serotypes, virulence profiles, sequence types (STs) and genetic relationships. Our results showed that the 56 isolates belong to 20 different STs, 29 O:H serotypes and 8 stx subtype combinations. The highly prevalent serotypes for bovine and ovine isolates were O8:H25 and O87:H16, respectively. Five serotypes of cattle or sheep isolates are novel. The majority (63%) of cattle isolates contain stx1 + stx2, subtyped into stx1a, stx2a and stx2c. In contrast, most of the sheep isolates contain stx1 only, primarily subtyped into stx1a and stx1c. None of the isolates tested eae-positive, but virulence factors such as ehxA and espP were present with variable prevalence rates. The prevalence of saa (19.6%) and espP (12.5%) in cattle isolates is much higher than that in sheep isolates, whereas that of subA (34%), katP (14.3%) and ireA (28.6%) in sheep isolates is considerably higher than that in cattle isolates. Core-genome SNP analysis revealed that the majority of isolates could be clustered based on their serotypes or STs, whereas some clustering is associated with more than one ST or serotype. Five sheep isolates (4 belonging to ST675 and serotype O76:H19 and 1 belonging to ST25 and serotype O128:H2) share STs, serotypes and stx profiles with two hemolytic uremic syndrome-associated enterohemorrhagic E. coli (HUSEC) isolates; a cattle isolate belonging to the same ST as HUSEC isolate HUSEC001 contains all the nine virulence genes tested. These data suggest a potential of the six isolates for causing severe human infections. Collectively, we described the characteristics of cattle and sheep STEC isolates from Xinjiang, China, which may be utilized in comparative studies of other geographic regions and sources of isolation, and for surveillance as well.

microRNA-19a-3p and microRNA-376c-3p Promote Hepatocellular Carcinoma Progression Through SOX6-Mediated Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling Pathway.

Background: Recent researches have suggested that microRNA (miR)-19a-3p and miR-376c-3p might function as initiators in diverse cancers. Based on which, in this current study, we aimed to probe into the combined effects and mechanisms of miR-19a-3p and miR-376c-3p in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells.

Methods: Tumor tissues and adjacent normal tissues from 21 cases of HCC patients, HCC cell lines, and human normal liver cell lines were used in this study. RT-qPCR and Western blot were implemented to detect the expression of miR-19a-3p, miR-376c-3p, SOX6, and Wnt/β-catenin pathway-associated factors in HCC tissues and cells. The direct relationships between miR-19a-3p or miR-376c-3p and SOX6 were confirmed by luciferase activity assay. HCC cells were treated with miR-19a-3p inhibitor, miR-376c-3p inhibitor, or oe-SOX-6 to figure out their functions in HCC malignancy. The in vivo assays were conducted for the confirmation of in vitro results.

Results: In both HCC tissues and cells, miR-19a-3p and miR-376c-3p were highly expressed, and SOX6 was poorly expressed. Depleted miR-19a-3p or miR-376c-3p was found to result in retarded HCC development. Bioinformatics analysis and luciferase activity assay revealed that SOX6 was the common target gene of miR-19a-3p and miR-376c-3p. Overexpressed SOX6 was demonstrated to block the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, thereby slowing down HCC progression. The in vivo assays showed that suppressed miR-19a-3p or miR-376c-3p and elevated SOX6 could reduce the tumor volume and weight of nude mice.

Conclusion: This study suggests that miR-19a-3p/miR-376c-3p activates the Wnt/β-catenin pathway via targeting SOX6, contributing to promoted biological functions of HCC cells.

Rchb. is a monotypic genus of Lamiaceae. In this study, the complete plastid genome of the species (Link) Kuntze was sequenced and assembled. The plastid genome obtained is 152,521 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat (IRa and IRb) regions of 25,596 bp, a large single-copy (LSC) region of 83,690 bp, and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,639 bp. The genome encoded 113 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 4 ribosomal RNA genes, and 30 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content of the genome obtained is 38.29%. The phylogenetic analysis based on 37 plastid genome of Lamiaceae revealed that the genus was sister to the - clade with strong support.

Functional abnormalities of striatum are related to the season-specific effect on schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a syndrome that is typically accompanied by delusions, hallucinations and cognitive impairments. Specifically, abundant evidences support the notion that more people diagnosed with schizophrenia are born during fall-winter than spring-summer. Although pathophysiological of schizophrenia might be associated with abnormal brain functional network, little is currently known the relationship between season and deficient brain functional network of schizophrenia. To investigate this issue, in this study 51 schizophrenic subjects and 72 healthy controls underwent MRI scanning to detect the brain functional mapping, each at spring-summer and fall-winter season throughout the year. The data-driven method was used to measure the blood oxygen metabolism variability (BOMV). Decreased BOMV in spring-summer while increased in fall-winter were observed within dopaminergic network of schizophrenic subjects, including striatum, thalamus, and hippocampus. The post hoc analysis exploring the coupling among changed BOMV regions, confirmed that a positive relationship, between pallidum and hippocampus existed in fall-winter healthy controls, but not in fall-winter schizophrenic subjects. These findings identified that seasonal effect on striatum might be associated with modulation of striatum-hippocampus. Our results provide a new insight into the role of season in understanding the pathophysiological of schizophrenia.

Effect of Senecio scandens ethanol extract on gut microbiota composition in mice.

The gut microbiota inhabits the animal intestinal tract, and dysbiosis of the gut microbiota may result in disease. Senecio scandens has pharmaceutical antibacterial activities and is regarded as a broad-spectrum antibiotic in traditional Chinese medicine. Extracts of S. scandens are reported to show strong antimicrobial activity, and quercetin significantly decreases some species in the caecal microflora. However, the bactericidal effects of the extracts on the gut microbiota remain obscure. Here, we supplied ethanol extract of S. scandens, which might possibly be used as an alternative for chemical antibiotics, to mice to investigate the state of the intestinal microbiota. Our studies included a control group, low-, moderate-, and high-dose ethanol extract groups, and cefixime capsule group. The ethanol extract groups did not present reduced diversity or differences in the gut microbiota balance. There were significant differences between the ethanol extract and cefixime capsule groups in terms of the gut microbiota. The control and ethanol extract groups contained similar bacteria, which suggested that the ethanol extract has no inhibitory effect on the gut microbiota in vivo. Bifidobacteriales and Lactobacillus acidophilus were significantly increased in the high-dose group. Both secretory immunoglobulin A and mucin 2 concentrations increased as the dose of ethanol extract increased. The functional prediction differences between the control and ethanol extract groups decreased with increasing extract doses, which indicated that the low-dose and high-dose extract treatments might regulate different pathways and functions of the gut microbiota. The results also highlighted the prevention of bacterial drug resistance in the ethanol extract groups.

Simultaneously enhanced degradation of N, N-dimethylacetamide and reduced formation of iron sludge by an efficient electrolysis catalyzed ozone process in the presence of dissolved silicate.

The generation of sludge is the main issue in iron-based electrochemical techniques. Interestingly, in this study, the effluent was totally limpid and iron sludge did not generate when dissolved silicate (NaSiO) was used as the electrolyte in an electrolysis catalyzed ozone (ECO-NaSiO) system. More importantly, the pseudo-first-order rate constants (0.112 min) for DMAC degradation in ECO-NaSiO process was much higher than those of ECO systems using other electrolytes. An inhibition film formed on the iron electrode surface was identified to inhibit excess corrosion of iron electrodes and efficiently catalyze decomposition of ozone simultaneously. It was confirmed that hydroxyl radical (OH) played a dominant role for the degradation of DMAC, and O and HO were also contained in ECO-NaSiO system. The contributions of contained oxidative reactions in ECO-NaSiO system were quantitatively evaluated. Finally, the degradation pathway of DMAC was proposed. This work provides an effective way for protecting electrode from corrosion in electrochemical process.

Reconstruction of Major Burns With Stevens-Johnson Syndrome: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a severe type of pleomorphic erythema and a rare disorder of the skin and mucous membranes, which can lead to serious infections, pulmonary embolism, acute respiratory distress syndrome, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and other serious consequences. Patients with SJS are usually treated in burn centers. SJS complicated by severe burns is very rare, and this is associated with a high risk of infection and other more serious complications. With SJS, the availability of donor sites is compromised given the lack of healthy epidermis, and this makes it more difficult to treat. The patient was a 52-year-old man with 45% TBSA burns with 40% TBSA full-thickness burns on both lower limbs. During treatment, his condition was complicated by SJS, renal failure, and respiratory failure. After 31 days, he was transferred to our department. On the 22nd day, the patient recovered from SJS, and after undergoing four skin grafting procedures, the burn wounds healed, and the donor site had healed spontaneously. He was discharged after 86 days of treatment in our department. In conclusion, major burns complicated with SJS are rare clinical presentations. The skin affected by the drug eruptions can be used as a donor site for transplantation to the burn wounds, and this donor area can also heal.

Comparative Analyses of the Chloroplast Genomes of Patchouli Plants and Their Relatives in (Lamiaceae).

Desf., the largest genus of the tribe Pogostemoneae (Lamiaceae), consists of ca. 80 species distributed mainly from South and Southeast Asia to China. The genus contains many patchouli plants, which are of great economic importance but taxonomically difficult. Therefore, it is necessary to characterize more chloroplast (cp) genomes for infrageneric phylogeny analyses and species identification of , especially for patchouli plants. In this study, we newly generated four cp genomes for three patchouli plants (i.e., Desf., C. Y. Wu et Y. C. Huang, and two cultivars of (Blanoco) Benth.). Comparison of all samples (including online available cp genomes of (Makino) Press and (Lour.) Kuntze) suggested that cp genomes are highly conserved in terms of genome size and gene content, with a typical quadripartite circle structure. Interspecific divergence of cp genomes has been maintained at a relatively low level, though seven divergence hotspot regions were identified by stepwise window analysis. The nucleotide diversity () value was correlated significantly with gap proportion (indels), but significantly negative with GC content. Our phylogenetic analyses based on 80 protein-coding genes yielded high-resolution backbone topologies for the Lamiaceae and For the overall mean substitution rates, the synonymous () and nonsynonymous () substitution rate values of protein-coding genes varied approximately threefold, while the values among different functional gene groups showed a wider variation range. Overall, the cp genomes of will be useful for phylogenetic reconstruction, species delimitation and identification in the future.

Metal-free black-red phosphorus as an efficient heterogeneous reductant to boost Fe/Fe cycle for peroxymonosulfate activation.

In this work, a novel metal-free black-red phosphorus (BRP) was prepared from red phosphorus (RP) and applied in Fe/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process. Compared with that of RP, the contaminant degradation performance of BRP was significantly elevated due to the enhanced electron transfer from BRP to Fe. This enhancement was mainly induced by size decrease effect, the removal of oxidation layer and the partial phase conversion. Moreoevr, BRP avoided the radical quenching reaction caused by reductant itself, whereas it was inevitable using homogeneous reductant like hydroxylamine. More importantly, the system had a superior recyclability and strong resistance to natural water. Though concurrent side-reaction between PMS and BRP occured, multiple PMS dosage could remarkedly alleviated the side-reaction, thus elevating PMS utilization efficiency. The dominant BRP oxidation products included phosphite and phosphate. Interestingly, moderate increase of Fe concentration could efficiently reduce the by-product formation via the prompt PMS activation by regenerated Fe. Our work clarified the acceleration mechanism of Fe/Fe cycle by BRP and proposed the control strategy of by-prodoct formation.

Chen, but differs from by its rugose leaves and glabrous capsules and from by its glabrous stipules without ciliate margin, densely hirsute-pilose leaves and obtuse apex of bracts. Additionally, it is also somewhat similar to Yan Liu, S. M. Ku & C.-I Peng, but there are significant distinctions in their stipules, leaves and bracts. The conservation status of is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR), according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Oxidative stress caused by a dysregulated Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway is involved in abnormal placenta formation in pregnant mice with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by extreme fatigue and disabling symptoms. Women with CFS often have a high risk of gynaecological problems such as irregular menstruation, endometriosis and pelvic pain and sexual dysfunction. Our previous results have shown that, in pregnant mice, CFS significantly decreased the progestational hormone level in serum, as well as learning and memory, and the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. In addition, the F1 generation also suffered from congenital hypothyroidism. At present, there has been no report about placenta formation and embryonic development in pregnant mice with CFS. The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of CFS on the morphology, oxidative stress and Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway during placenta formation. In this study, we found that CFS decreased the number of implantation sites for blastocysts, and increased the number of absorbed, stillborn and malformed fetuses. The morphology and structure of the placenta were abnormal in pregnant mice with CFS. Further study found that the oxidative stress in serum, uterus and placenta was increased in pregnant mice with CFS, while the levels of antioxidase were decreased. CFS also inhibited the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway in the placenta. These results suggested that inhibition of the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway and enhanced oxidative stress play an important role in abnormal placentation in pregnant mice with CFS.

Estrogen receptor alpha expression in renal tissue and its relationship with prognosis in immunoglobulin A nephropathy.

Objective: Epidemiologic studies have shown that, compared to men, women have better prognoses in chronic renal diseases. This indicates that gender hormones may have some effect on renal function. The present study aimed to investigate the expression and relationship with prognosis of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in renal tissue of immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) patients.

Methods: Expression of ERα was detected by immunohistochemistry. Specimens were collected from forty-five IgAN patients and five normal healthy participants. In addition to expression, the relationship of ERα with clinical data, prognosis, and the degree of glomerular damage were analyzed.

Results: ERα was expressed in the glomeruli and renal tubules. The expression of ERα in the glomeruli of IgAN renal tissue decreased gradually ( = 0.001, < 0.05) with the increasing severity of disease and its expression was associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), serum creatinine (Scr) and pathological grade (r = 0.876, -0.818 and -0.736, < 0.05). In addition, the expression of ERα was significantly decreased in hypertensive IgAN patients compared with the non-hypertensive group ( = 0.011). We found that ERα was of great significance for the prognosis of IgAN ( = 0.01, < 0.05).

Conclusions: The expression of ERα in the renal tissue of IgAN patients was reduced and there was a correlation with the degree of kidney damage and prognosis, suggesting that ERα may play a role in the progression of IgAN.

The Effects of Music Intervention on Pallidum-DMN Circuit of Schizophrenia.

Music intervention has been applied to improve symptoms of schizophrenic subjects as a complementary treatment in medicine. Although the psychiatric symptoms, especially for motivation and emotion, could be increased in schizophrenia, the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. We employed a longitudinal study to measure the alteration of striatum functional networks in schizophrenic subjects undergoing Mozart music listening using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Forty-five schizophrenic inpatients were recruited and randomly assigned to two groups. Under the standard care with antipsychotic medication, one group received music intervention for 1 month and the other group is set as control. Both schizophrenic groups were compared to healthy subjects. Resting-state fMRI was acquired from schizophrenic subjects at baseline and after one-month music intervention and from healthy subjects at baseline. Striatum network was assessed through seed-based static and dynamic functional connectivity (FC) analyses. After music intervention, increased static FC was observed between pallidum and ventral hippocampus in schizophrenic subjects. Increased dynamic FCs were also found between pallidus and subregions of default mode network (DMN), including cerebellum crus and posterior cingulate cortex. Moreover, static pallidus-hippocampus FC increment was positively correlated with the improvement of negative symptoms in schizophrenic subjects. Together, these findings provided evidence that music intervention might have an effect on the FC of the striatum-DMN circuit and might be related to the remission of symptoms of schizophrenia.

Taxonomic revision of the genus (Phyllanthaceae) in Taiwan, China.

Lu & Y.S. Hsu, are reduced to the new synonyms of Blume, Hayata, and Wight, respectively. Two names, viz. Hayata and Hayata, are lectotypified here. A key to the species in Taiwan is provided.

The diagnostic value of MRI for architectural distortion categorized as BI-RADS category 3-4 by mammography.

Background: Architectural distortion is a common mammographic sign that can be benign or malignant. This study investigated the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for architectural distortions that were category 3-4 under the breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) by mammography.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 219 pathologically confirmed lesions in 208 patients who had BI-RADS category 3-4 architectural distortion in mammography images. Two radiologists described and categorized the architectural distortion and assigned the BI-RADS categories to the corresponding lesions on MRI images. Using the postoperative pathological diagnosis as the gold standard, we performed receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis for the efficacy of mammography and MRI in differentiating patients with benign or malignant lesions.

Results: Totally 151 benign lesions and 68 malignant lesions were confirmed. According to the full-field digital mammography (FFDM), 82 lesions were in BI-RADS category 3, 104 lesions in 4A, 29 lesions in 4B, and 4 lesions in 4C. The positive predictive values of FFDM for BI-RADS categories 3, 4A, 4B, and 4C were 13.4% (11/82), 27.9% (29/104), 82.8% (24/29), and 100.0% (4/4), respectively. According to MRI, 59 lesions were in BI-RADS categories 1-2, 87 lesions in 3, 39 lesions in 4, and 34 lesions in 5, with their positive predictive values being 0.0% (0/58), 2.3% (2/87), 89.7% (35/39), and 100.0% (34/34), respectively. The area under the ROC curve (AUC) of breast benign and malignant lesions differentiated by FFDM was 0.647, and the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index were 86.3%, 41.7%, and 0.280, respectively. The AUC of FFDM combined with dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) in differentiating breast benign malignant lesions was 0.851, and the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index were 89.2%, 80.7%, and 0.699, respectively. The AUC of FFDM combined with DCE-MRI and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in differentiating benign malignant lesions was 0.983, and the diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and Youden index were 98.1%, 97.5%, and 0.956, respectively.

Conclusions: MRI can improve the diagnostic efficiency of mammography in diagnosing BI-RADS category 3-4 architectural distortions and can help in the qualitative diagnosis of architectural distortion lesions.

Degradation of sulfamethoxazole by cobalt-nickel powder composite catalyst coupled with peroxymonosulfate: Performance, degradation pathways and mechanistic consideration.

In this work, cobalt-nickel powder (Co-NP) synthesized through electroless plating was used as a heterogeneous bimetallic catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to degrade sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in the aqueous phase. Compared with different oxidation systems and different catalysts, it was proved that Co-NP had excellent catalytic ability, fast electron transfer rate and good stability. The effects of key parameters (initial pH, SMX concentration, catalyst and PMS dosages) on SMX degradation and ion leaching were studied in detail. Furthermore, the sensitivity of inorganic anions and different pollutants towards the Co-NP/PMS system was studied to investigate its application in natural water bodies. Quenching test showed that the main reactive oxygen species generated during the reaction were OH and SO, of which SO played a predominating role. Combined with XPS analysis, the activation mechanism was concluded that free radicals were mainly generated through the valence change of Co and Ni. Based on the seven intermediates measured through ultrahigh performance liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS), the possible degradation pathways of SMX were proposed. Notably, this study provided a new kind of supporter for advanced oxidation processes and electroless plating technology.
