Whey beverages that were enriched with fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and xylooligosaccharides (XOS) were used for carrying extract that was obtained by the supercritical CO extraction technique to produce novel functional products. Fennel-based whey beverages were subjected to thermosonication processing (100, 200, and 300 W at 60 °C for 15 min) to verify the performance of the dairy colloidal system for protecting the bioactive fennel compounds. The impacts of thermosonication processing on the quality attributes of the functional whey beverages were examined according to their droplet size distribution, microstructure, kinetic stability, color parameters, browning index, total phenolic content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-Azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline)-6-sulphonic acid) assays. Electronic address:

Acid salts have been shown to catalyze xylan hydrolysis selectively and efficiently for xylooligosaccharides (XOS) production while using acid salts that are non-toxic and available as feed additives can avoid separation from resulting XOS-rich hydrolysates. There is no report on XOS production with sodium bisulfate (NaHSO) hydrolysis, of significance is that NaHSO as feed additive does not need to be separated. In this work, NaHSO hydrolysis was firstly employed to produce XOS from poplar. Read More

SE conditions 200 °C; 15 bar; 10 min led to 1) soluble XOS yields of up to 35% (w/w) of initial xylan with ∼50% of the recovered XOS corresponding to xylobiose and xylotriose, considered the most valuable sugars for prebiotic applications; 2) fermentable glucose yields from the enzymatic hydrolysis of SE-pretreated SCS of up to ∼78%; 3) increase in the energy content of saccharified SCS residues (16%) compared to the untreated material. From an integrated biorefinery perspective, it demonstrated the potential use of SCS for the production of value-added XOS ingredients as well as liquid and solid biofuel products. Read More
