The treatment of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine to cure severe immune thrombocytopenia in a patient in a minimally conscious state: a case report.

Ann Palliat Med 2021 Mar;10(3):3483-3490

Panzhihua University, Affiliated Hospital of Panzhihua University, Panzhihua, China.

Immune thrombocytopenia is a common complication in patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS). MCS patients are prone to pulmonary infection for the reasons of long-term bed rest and tracheotomy etc., which leads to frequent immune thrombocytopenia. Read More

Investigation of the combined use of capping and oxidizing agents in the immobilization of arsenic in sediments.

Sci Total Environ 2021 Apr 6;782:146930. Epub 2021 Apr 6.

State Key Laboratory of Lake Science and Environment, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing 210008, China.

The combined use of capping (lanthanum modified bentonite; LMB) and oxidizing (calcium nitrate; CN) agents was investigated to immobilize arsenic (As) in sediments. The vertical changes in labile As and dissolved As were measured using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and Rhizon devices. The results showed that the combined application of LMB and CN had the optimal effect on the immobilization of both DGT-labile As and dissolved As, compared to single treatments using LMB or CN. Combined effect of microplastics and global warming factors on early growth and development of the sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus).

Sci Total Environ 2021 Apr 1;782:146888. Epub 2021 Apr 1.

Centro Oceanográfico de Vigo, Instituto Español de Oceanografía, IEO, Subida a Radio Faro, 50, 36390 Vigo, Pontevedra, Spain.

The aim of this work was to estimate the potential risk of the combined effect of global change factors (acidification, temperature increase) and microplastic (MP) pollution on the growth and development of the sea urchin P. lividus. Embryo-larval bioassays were conducted to determine growth and morphology after 48 h of incubation with MP (1000 and 3000 particles/mL); with filtered sea water at pH = 7. Read More

Ultrathin chalcogenide nanosheets for photoacoustic imaging-guided synergistic photothermal/gas therapy.

Biomaterials 2021 Apr 7;273:120807. Epub 2021 Apr 7.

State Key Laboratory of Chemical Resource Engineering, Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing, 100029, PR China. Electronic address:

Previous preclinical and clinical studies have shown that using only a single therapy makes it difficult to completely eradicate tumors and restrain cancer metastasis. To overcome this challenge, multi-modal synergistic treatments have attracted considerable attention. Herein, an ultrathin Cu-loaded CoCuFe-selenide (CCFS) was prepared by a facile topotactic transformation from CoCuFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets (NSs), followed by surface modification with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and l-arginine (L-Arg). Optimal allocation of proton therapy slots in combined proton-photon radiotherapy.

Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2021 Apr 10. Epub 2021 Apr 10.

Department of Radiation Oncology, University Hospital Zürich, Zürich, Switzerland.

Purpose: Proton therapy is a limited resource, which is not available to all patients who may benefit from it. We investigate combined proton-photon treatments, in which some fractions are delivered with protons and the remaining fractions with photons, as an approach to maximize the benefit of limited proton therapy resources at a population level.

Methods: To quantify differences in normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) between protons and photons, we consider a cohort of 45 head-and-neck cancer patients for which IMRT and IMPT plans were previously created, in combination with NTCP models for xerostomia and dysphagia considered in the Netherlands for proton patient selection. Synergistic effects of green tea extract and Paclitaxel in the induction of mitochondrial apoptosis in ovarian cancer cell lines.

Gene 2021 Apr 10:145638. Epub 2021 Apr 10.

Department of Medical Radiation, Faculty of Engineering, Islamic Azad University, Science and Research Branch, Tehran, Iran. Electronic address:

Background: Green tea is a natural compound with anti-neoplastic properties. Paclitaxel (PTX) is a natural anti-tumor medication used to manage patients with advanced ovarian cancer. This manuscript evaluated the cytotoxic effects of green tea extract combined with PTX drug in two human ovarian cancer cell lines (p53-negative cell line, SKOV-3; and mutant type p53 cell line, OVCAR-3) and underlying mechanisms. Current Prescribing Practices and Guideline Concordance for the Treatment of Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections in Women.

Am J Obstet Gynecol 2021 Apr 10. Epub 2021 Apr 10.

Stanford University School of Medicine, Department of Medicine. Stanford, CA, USA.

Background: Uncomplicated urinary tract infections are one of the most common bacterial infections in the United States. Clinical practice guidelines from the Infectious Diseases Society of America recommend nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and fosfomycin as first-line antibiotic treatments, and discourage the use of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The United States Food and Drug Administration released several black box warnings about fluoroquinolones over the past decade due to antibiotic resistance and a high burden of adverse events. Therapeutic targeting of ATR yields durable regressions in small cell lung cancers with high replication stress.

Cancer Cell 2021 Apr;39(4):566-579.e7

Division of Preclinical Innovation, National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institute of Health, Rockville, MD 20850, USA; Lymphoid Malignancies Branch, Center for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA.

Small cell neuroendocrine cancers (SCNCs) are recalcitrant cancers arising from diverse primary sites that lack effective treatments. Using chemical genetic screens, we identified inhibition of ataxia telangiectasia and rad3 related (ATR), the primary activator of the replication stress response, and topoisomerase I (TOP1), nuclear enzyme that suppresses genomic instability, as synergistically cytotoxic in small cell lung cancer (SCLC). In a proof-of-concept study, we combined M6620 (berzosertib), first-in-class ATR inhibitor, and TOP1 inhibitor topotecan in patients with relapsed SCNCs. Read More

Parkinson's disease.

Lancet 2021 Apr 9. Epub 2021 Apr 9.

Institute of Neurogenetics and Department of Neurology, University of Lübeck and University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck, Germany.

Parkinson's disease is a recognisable clinical syndrome with a range of causes and clinical presentations. Parkinson's disease represents a fast-growing neurodegenerative condition; the rising prevalence worldwide resembles the many characteristics typically observed during a pandemic, except for an infectious cause. In most populations, 3-5% of Parkinson's disease is explained by genetic causes linked to known Parkinson's disease genes, thus representing monogenic Parkinson's disease, whereas 90 genetic risk variants collectively explain 16-36% of the heritable risk of non-monogenic Parkinson's disease.
