The comparison of structure, nature of bond, and electronic transitions in [M(η -Cp)(η -C Me )] (M = Fe , Ru , Os ) hybrids and corresponding metallocenes; a theoretical study.

J Comput Chem 2021 May 7. Epub 2021 May 7.

Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, Malayer University, Malayer, Iran.

In this paper, metallocene-fullerene hybrid complexes, [M(η -Cp)(η -C Me )] (M = Fe , Ru , Os ), as well as corresponding classical metallocenes have been studied theoretically at BP86/def2-SVP and M06L/def2-SVP levels of theory. With considering these metal complexes as an ABA' system (B is the central metal ion and A and A' are related η -ligands), the total interaction energies were calculated using common methods, as well as by calculating the interaction energies between the four defined pairs of fragments including A-B, B-A', A-BA', and AB-A'. The resulting data clearly showed that in all complexes there is a strong anticoopertivity between two metal-(η -ligand) bonds. Read More

Speeding up Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham calculations with first-order corrections.

J Chem Phys 2021 Apr;154(16):164114

Department of Physical Chemistry and Materials Science, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, P.O. Box 91, H-1521 Budapest, Hungary.

Several approaches are presented to improve the efficiency of Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham self-consistent field (SCF) calculations relying on a simple first-order energy correction reminiscent of the scheme used in dual-basis SCF methods. The basic idea is to perform an initial SCF calculation computing approximate Fock-matrices and, in the final iteration step, to use a more complete Fock-matrix builder together with the energy correction to diminish the error. The approximation is tested for conventional and local density fitting (DF) SCF approaches combining various auxiliary basis sets, fitting metrics, and Fock-matrix construction algorithms in the initial and final iterations as well as for seminumerical SCF methods combining integration grids of different qualities. Phys Rev Lett 2021 Apr;126(15):157401

Rutgers Center for Emergent Materials and Department of Physics and Astronomy, Rutgers University, Piscataway, New Jersey 08854, USA.

Terahertz vortex beams with different superposition of the orbital angular momentum l=±1, ±2, ±3, and ±4 and spin angular momentum σ=±1 were used to study antiferromagnetic (AFM) resonances in TbFe_{3}(BO_{3})_{4} and Ni_{3}TeO_{6} single crystals. In both materials we observed a strong vortex beam dichroism for the AFM resonances that are split in external magnetic field. The magnitude of the vortex dichroism is comparable to that for conventional circular dichroism due to σ. Read More

Generation of Current Vortex by Spin Current in Rashba Systems.

Phys Rev Lett 2021 Apr;126(15):157202

Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China.

Employing unbiased large-scale time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group simulations, we demonstrate the generation of a charge-current vortex via spin injection in the Rashba system. The spin current is polarized perpendicular to the system plane and injected from an attached antiferromagnetic spin chain. We discuss the conversion between spin and orbital angular momentum in the current vortex that occurs because of the conservation of the total angular momentum and the spin-orbit interaction. Quantifying electron-correlation effects in small coinage-metal clusters calculations.

Phys Chem Chem Phys 2021 Apr;23(16):9832-9842

Instituto de Física, Universidade Federal de Goiás, 74.001-970, Goiânia, GO, Brazil.

We investigate many-electron correlation effects in neutral and charged coinage-metal clusters Cun, Agn, and Aun (n = 1-4) via ab initio calculations using fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) simulations, density functional theory (DFT), and the Hartree-Fock (HF) method. From very accurate FN-DMC total energies of the clusters and the HF results in the infinity large complete-basis-set limit, we obtain correlation energies in these strongly correlated many-electron clusters involving d orbitals. The obtained bond lengths of the clusters, atomic binding and dissociation energies, ionization potentials, and electron affinities are in satisfactory agreement with the available experiments. Mn Dimer Can Be Described Accurately with Density Functional Calculations When Self-Interaction Correction Is Applied.

J Phys Chem Lett 2021 May 26;12(17):4240-4246. Epub 2021 Apr 26.

Science Institute and Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Iceland VR-III, 107 Reykjavík, Reykjavik, Iceland.

Qualitatively incorrect results are obtained for the Mn dimer in density functional theory calculations using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA), and similar results are obtained from local density and meta-GGA functionals. The coupling is predicted to be ferromagnetic rather than antiferromagnetic, and the bond between the atoms is predicted to be an order of magnitude too strong and approximately an Ångstrøm too short. Explicit, self-interaction correction (SIC) applied to a commonly used GGA energy functional, however, provides close agreement with both experimental data and high-level, multireference wave function calculations.
