Inorg Chem 2021 Jul 26. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Medicinal Inorganic Chemistry Group, Department of Chemistry, University of British Columbia, 2036 Main Mall, Vancouver, British Columbia V6T 1Z1, Canada.

A new versatile chelating ligand for intermediate size and softness radiometals [Cu]Cu and [In]In, Hpyhox, was synthesized by introducing pyridine as a new donor moiety to complement 8-hydroxyquinoline on an ethylenediamine backbone. The combination of pyridine and oxine as donor sets was explored through structural analysis, and crystals of the three metal complexes with Cu, La, and In demonstrate how the ligand adapts to accommodate metal ions of different sizes and charge. Exhaustive in-batch UV solution studies characterized the protonation constants of the free ligand as well as the formation constants of the metal complexes with Cu, In, and La. Read More

Characterization of different oligomeric forms of CRISP2 in the perinuclear theca versus the fibrous tail structures of boar spermatozoa.

Biol Reprod 2021 Jul 26. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Department of Biomolecular Health Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, the Netherlands.

Mammalian sperm carry a variety of highly condensed insoluble protein structures such as the perinuclear theca, the fibrous sheath and the outer dense fibers, which are essential to sperm function. We studied the role of cysteine rich secretory protein 2 (CRISP2); a known inducer of non-pathological protein amyloids, in pig sperm with a variety of techniques. CRISP2, which is synthesized during spermatogenesis, was localized by confocal immunofluorescent imaging in the tail and in the post-acrosomal region of the sperm head. Read More

Dalton Trans 2021 Jul 26. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Department of Chemistry, Ege University, 35100 Izmir, Turkey.

We report herein the synthesis of four new Pd-PEPPSI complexes with backbone-modified N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands and their application as catalysts in the α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols using a borrowing hydrogen process and tandem Suzuki-Miyaura coupling/α-alkylation reactions. Among the synthesized Pd-PEPPSI complexes, complex 2c having 4-methoxyphenyl groups at the 4,5-positions and 4-methoxybenzyl substituents on the N-atoms of imidazole exhibited the highest catalytic activity in the α-alkylation of ketones with primary alcohols (18 examples) with yields reaching up to 95%. Additionally, complex 2c was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for the tandem Suzuki-Miyaura-coupling/α-alkylation of ketones to give biaryl ketones with high yields. Read More

TRANVIA (TVA) facilitates cellulose synthase trafficking and delivery to the plasma membrane.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2021 Jul;118(30)

Cellulose is synthesized at the plasma membrane by cellulose synthase (CESA) complexes (CSCs), which are assembled in the Golgi and secreted to the plasma membrane through the -Golgi network (TGN) compartment. However, the molecular mechanisms that guide CSCs through the secretory system and deliver them to the plasma membrane are poorly understood. Here, we identified an uncharacterized gene, (), that is transcriptionally coregulated with the genes required for primary cell wall synthesis. Read More
