Manometric real-time studies of the mechanochemical synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks.

Chem Sci 2020 Jan 2;11(8):2141-2147. Epub 2020 Jan 2.

Department of Chemistry, McGill University H3A 0B8 Montreal Quebec Canada

We demonstrate a simple method for real-time monitoring of mechanochemical synthesis of metal-organic frameworks, by measuring changes in pressure of gas produced in the reaction. Using this manometric method to monitor the mechanosynthesis of the zeolitic imidazolate framework ZIF-8 from basic zinc carbonate reveals an intriguing feedback mechanism in which the initially formed ZIF-8 reacts with the CO byproduct to produce a complex metal carbonate phase, the structure of which is determined directly from powder X-ray diffraction data. We also show that the formation of the carbonate phase may be prevented by addition of excess ligand. Read More

Enzymes in a golden cage.

Chem Sci 2020 Mar 28;11(15):3965-3977. Epub 2020 Mar 28.

Institute of Chemistry, The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem Jerusalem 9190401 Israel

We describe a general method for the entrapment of enzymes within bulk metallic gold. This is a new approach for the immobilization of enzymes on metals, which is commonly carried out by 2D adsorption or covalent biding, that is, the enzyme is in contact with the metal at a specific contact zone of the enzyme, while most of the rest of it remains exposed to the environment. The 3D metallic encaging of the enzymes is quite different: the enzyme is in contact with the metallic cage walls all around it and is well protected inside. Read More

Simulation of the Electrochemical Impedance in a Three-Dimensional, Complex Microstructure of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Cathode and Its Application in the Microstructure Characterization.

Front Chem 2021 27;9:627699. Epub 2021 May 27.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, United States.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful technique for material characterization and diagnosis of the solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) as it enables separation of different phenomena such as bulk diffusion and surface reaction that occur simultaneously in the SOFC. In this work, we simulate the electrochemical impedance in an experimentally determined, three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of a mixed ion-electron conducting (MIEC) SOFC cathode. We determine the impedance response by solving the mass conservation equation in the cathode under the conditions of an AC load across the cathode's thickness and surface reaction at the pore/solid interface.
