Tissue printing for engineering transplantable human parathyroid patch to improves parathyroid engraftment, integration, and hormone secretion.

Biofabrication 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, bundang-gu, Seongnam, 13620, Korea (the Republic of).

During thyroid surgery, some parathyroid glands fail to maintain their function, therefore, they are unavoidably detached from the patient. For the purpose of re-preservation of the function, they are minced into small segments and transplanted into the fat or muscle layer. Yet, this method of auto-grafting the parathyroid glands is frequently unsuccessful due to its poor interaction and engraftment with the native tissue, eventually leading to the dysfunction of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion. BH4-deficient hyperphenylalaninemia in Russia.

PLoS One 2021 6;16(4):e0249608. Epub 2021 Apr 6.

Research Centre for Medical Genetics, Moscow, Russia.

A timely detection of patients with tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) -deficient types of hyperphenylalaninemia (HPABH4) is important for assignment of correct therapy, allowing to avoid complications. Often HPABH4 patients receive the same therapy as phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) -deficiency (phenylketonuria) patients-dietary treatment-and do not receive substitutive BH4 therapy until the diagnosis is confirmed by molecular genetic means. In this study, we present a cohort of 30 Russian patients with HPABH4 with detected variants in genes causing different types of HPA. Read More

Outcomes of Tendo-Achilles lengthening and weight-bearing total contact cast for management of early midfoot charcot neuroarthropathy.

J Clin Orthop Trauma 2021 Jun 10;17:128-138. Epub 2021 Mar 10.

Basildon University Hospital, UK.

Aim Of Study: To report outcomes of tendo-Achilles lengthening (TAL) followed by weight-bearing total contact cast (TCC) in the out-patient setting for patients presented with midfoot Charcot neuroarthropathy (CN) and, develop a new classification system for midfoot CN based on this experience.

Patient And Methods: Published evidence suggests that tight Achilles-gastrocnemius-soleus complex is the deforming force in the initiation and progression of midfoot CN and TAL has shown to improve the range of ankle dorsiflexion and reduction of midfoot plantar pressures. We utilised this technique in the out-patient setting followed by weight-bearing TCC for all new patients who presented with a diagnosis of midfoot CN from February 2018. Read More
