Synthesis of N-labeled heterocycles the cleavage of C-N bonds of anilines and glycine-N.

Chem Commun (Camb) 2021 May 5. Epub 2021 May 5.

Department of Chemistry, Fudan University, 2005 Songhu Road, Shanghai 200438, China.

A nitrogen replacement process that directly incorporates the 15N atom of glycine-15N into anilines was reported. The process involves a Csp2-N bond cleavage of anilines driven by dearomatization and a Csp3-N bond cleavage of glycine-15N driven by aromatization. A variety of 15N-labeled aromatic heterocycles can be prepared via this process. Read More

Open-air synthesis of oligo(ethylene glycol)-functionalized polypeptides from non-purified -carboxyanhydrides.

Biomater Sci 2021 May 5. Epub 2021 May 5.

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA. and Department of Chemistry, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA and Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA and Department of Bioengineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA and Materials Research Laboratory, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801, USA.

With PEG-like properties, such as hydrophilicity and stealth effect against protein absorption, oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG)-functionalized polypeptides have emerged as a new class of biomaterials alternative to PEG with polypeptide-like properties. Synthesis of this class of materials, however, has been demonstrated very challenging, as the synthesis and purification of OEG-functionalized N-carboxyanhydrides (OEG-NCAs) in high purity, which is critical for the success in polymerization, is tedious and often results in low yield. OEG-functionalized polypeptides are therefore only accessible to a few limited labs with expertise in this specialized NCA chemistry and materials. Read More

Direct observation of metal oxide nanoparticles being transformed into metal single atoms with oxygen-coordinated structure and high-loadings.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2021 Apr 28. Epub 2021 Apr 28.

Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Chemistry, Zhongguancun North First Street 2,, 100190, Beijing, CHINA.

Direct conversion of bulk metal or nanoparticles into metal single atoms under thermal pyrolysis condition is a highly-efficient and promising strategy to fabricate single atom catalysts (SACs). Usually, nitrogen-doped carbon is used as the anchoring substrate to capture the migrating metal ion species at high temperatures, and stable isolated SACs with nitrogen coordinations are formed during the process. Herein, we report unexpected oxygen-coordinated metal single atom catalysts (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn-SACs) with high loadings (above 10 wt%) through direct transformation of metal oxide nanoparticles (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn-NPs) in an inert atmosphere at 750 o C for 2 h. Graphitic nitrogen in carbon catalysts is important for the reduction of nitrite as revealed by naturally abundant N NMR spectroscopy.

Dalton Trans 2021 Apr 29. Epub 2021 Apr 29.

Department of Materials and Environmental Chemistry, Stockholm University, 10691 Stockholm, Sweden.

Metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon is considered as a green functional material, but the structural determination of the atomic positions of nitrogen remains challenging. We recently demonstrated that directly-excited solid state 15N NMR (ssNMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the determination of such positions in N-doped carbon at natural 15N isotope abundance. Here we report a green chemistry approach for the synthesis of N-doped carbon using cellulose as a precursor, and a study of the catalytic properties and atomic structures of the related catalyst. Inhibition of DNA replication initiation by silver nanoclusters.

Nucleic Acids Res 2021 Apr 27. Epub 2021 Apr 27.

Silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) have outstanding physicochemical characteristics, including the ability to interact with proteins and DNA. Given the growing number of diagnostic and therapeutic applications of AgNCs, we evaluated the impact of AgNCs on DNA replication and DNA damage response in cell-free extracts prepared from unfertilized Xenopus laevis eggs. We find that, among a number of silver nanomaterials, AgNCs uniquely inhibited genomic DNA replication and abrogated the DNA replication checkpoint in cell-free extracts. Read More

Laboratory investigation of the anisotropic confinement-dependent brittle-ductile transition of a Utah coal.

Int J Min Sci Technol 2021 ;31(1):51-57

Mine Safety Branch, CDC/NIOSH/SMRD, Spokane, WA 99207, USA.

This paper was developed as part of an effort by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to identify risk factors associated with bumps in the prevention of fatalities and accidents in highly stressed, bump-prone ground conditions. Changes of failure mechanism with increasing confinement, from extensional-to shear-dominated failure, are widely observed in the rupture of intact specimens at the laboratory scale and in rock masses. In the previous analysis conducted in 2018, both unconfined and triaxial compressive tests were conducted to investigate the strength characteristics of some specimens of a Utah coal, including the spalling limits, the ratio of apparent unconfined compressive strength (AUCS) to unconfined compressive strength (UCS), the damage characteristics, and the post-yield dilatancy.
