Compositional Changes in the Extra Virgin Olive Oil Used as a Medium for Cheese Preservation.

Foods 2022 Aug 4;11(15). Epub 2022 Aug 4.

Institute of Agriculture and Tourism, Karla Huguesa 8, 52440 Poreč, Croatia.

The influence of semi-hard (C1), hard (C2), and soft whey cheese (C3) immersed in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) on its oxidative and hydrolytic parameters, fatty acids, and phenolic composition during two months of simultaneous storage was investigated. Accelerated hydrolytic and oxidative degradation was noted in EVOO stored with the immersed cheese compared to control oil. Oxidation indicator (K), myristic (C 14:0), and -oleic fatty acid (C18:1t) exceeded the prescribed limit for the EVOO category in oils stored with immersed C1 and C2, which indicated that standard analytical parameters are ineffective as tools to examine the declared quality and authenticity of such topping oils. Synthesis of Fatty Acid Methyl Ester from Kernel Oil: Parameter Optimization, Engine Performance, and Emission Characteristics for Kernel Oil Fatty Acid Methyl Ester Blend with Mineral Diesel Fuel.

ACS Omega 2022 Jun 8;7(24):20619-20633. Epub 2022 Jun 8.

Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Biological and Chemical Engineering, Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Addis Ababa 16417, Ethiopia.

Utilization of agricultural waste such as nonedible seed oil for the synthesis of biodiesel via catalytic transesterification is one of the effective ways for the partial replacement of petroleum-based fuels in the area of renewable energy development and is beneficial to CO, CO, and unburned hydrocarbon (HC) emission reduction to the environment. In this regard, the current study investigates the synthesis of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) from kernel oil by considering parameter interaction and optimization to maximize the yield of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). The response surface methodology-central composite design (RSM-CCD) was applied to optimize the fatty acid methyl ester (CMKO-FAME) synthesis process by varying the process parameters such as reaction time (1-2 h), molar ratio (6:1-12:1), and catalyst loading (1-2 wt %). State Key Laboratory of Conservation and Utilization of Subtropical Agro-Bioresources, College of Agriculture, Guangxi University, Nanning 530005, China.

Rice grain yield is a complex and highly variable quantitative trait consisting of several key components, including the grain weight, the effective panicles per unit area, and the grain number per panicle (GNPP). The GNPP is a significant contributor to grain yield controlled by multiple genes (QTL) and is crucial for improvement. Attempts have been made to find genes for this trait, which has always been a challenging and arduous task through conventional methods. Read More

Myristic acid selectively augments β-tubulin levels in C2C12 myotubes via diacylglycerol kinase δ.

FEBS Open Bio 2022 Jul 20. Epub 2022 Jul 20.

Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, Chiba University, Japan.

Effective amelioration of type II diabetes requires therapies that increase both glucose uptake activity per cell and skeletal muscle mass. Myristic acid (14:0) increases diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) δ protein levels and enhances glucose uptake in myotubes in a DGKδ-dependent manner. However, it is still unclear whether myristic acid treatment affects skeletal muscle mass. Read More

Myristoylation (MYR) is a protein modification where a myristoyl group is covalently attached to an exposed (N-terminal) glycine residue. Glycine myristoylation occurs during protein translation (co-translation) or after (post-translation). Myristoylated proteins have a role in signal transduction, apoptosis, and pathogen-mediated processes and their prediction can help in functionally annotating the fraction of proteins undergoing MYR in different proteomes.
