Influence of anthopometric variables on the mechanical properties of human rib cortical bone.

Biomed Phys Eng Express 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Eduard Maristany, 14, Barcelona, Catalunya, 08034, SPAIN.

Objective: The mechanical properties of ribs from a large number of post-mortem human subjects (PMHS) were analyzed to search for variation according to age, sex or BMI in the sample. A large sample of specimens from different donors (N = 64) with a very wide range of ages and anthropometric characteristics was tested.

Methods: Uniaxial tensile tests were used for a sample of coupons machined from cortical bone tissue in order to isolate the purely mechanical properties from the geometrically influenced properties of the rib. Read More

Polypyrrole and enzyme free cholesterol flakes based composite: Selective determination of theophylline.

J Pharm Biomed Anal 2021 Apr 6;199:114065. Epub 2021 Apr 6.

Polymer Electronics Lab, Department of Bioelectronics and Biosensors, Alagappa University, Karaikudi, 630 003, Tamil Nadu, India. Electronic address:

In the present work, we demonstrated the non-enzymatic theophylline (TP) detection using nanostructured Polypyrrole (Ppy) and Cholesterol (Ch) flakes coordinated nanocomposite coated on Glassy Carbon Electrode. The higher active surface area and good mechanical stability of the Ppy integrated Ch composite exhibited better oxidation towards TP. The electron transfer across hydrogen bonding is of fundamental importance in enhancing the biochemical process in this biosensor system. Read More

Functionalization and use of grape stalks as poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) reinforcing fillers.

Waste Manag 2021 Apr 10;126:538-548. Epub 2021 Apr 10.

Department of Life Sciences (Agri-Food Science Area), BIOGEST - SITEIA Interdepartmental Centre, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Piazzale Europa 1, Reggio Emilia, Emilia-Romagna 42124, Italy.

Grape stalks are a lignocellulosic biomass, which is a very complex material, whose easy and profitable fractionation to obtain its basic components is still not available. Therefore, alternative ways to try and make use of grape stalks are currently being explored. In the present study, the possible use of dried and milled grape stalks as filler in bio-composites was assessed using polybutylene succinate as a basic polymer. Read More

Tuning Antibody Presentation to Enhance T-Cell Activation for Downstream Cytotoxicity.

Langmuir 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia 30332, United States.

Cytotoxic effector cells are an integral component of the immune response against pathogens and diseases such as cancer and thus of great interest to researchers who wish to enhance the native immune response. Although researchers routinely use particles to stimulate cytotoxic T cells, few studies have comprehensively investigated: (1) beyond initial activation responses (i.e. Read More

Improving the Photovoltaic Performance of Flexible Solar Cells with Semitransparent Inorganic Perovskite Active Layers by Interface Engineering.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

State Key Laboratory of Material Processing and Die & Mould Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan 430074, P. R. China.

Inorganic perovskite CsPbBr has broad application prospects in photovoltaic windows, tandem cells, and other fields due to its intrinsic semitransparency, excellent photoelectric properties, and stability. In this work, a high-quality semitransparent CsPbBr film was prepared by a sequential vacuum evaporation deposition method without high-temperature annealing and successfully used as the active layer of flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) for the first time, achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.00%. Preventing Catastrophic Failure of Microfibrillar Adhesives in Compliant Systems Based on Statistical Analysis of Adhesive Strength.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

Mechanical Engineering Department, California State University, Northridge, California 91330, United States.

Adhesives based on fibrillar surface microstructures have shown great potential for handling applications requiring strong, reversible, and switchable adhesion. Recently, the importance of the statistical distribution of adhesive strength of individual fibrils in controlling the overall performance was revealed. Strength variations physically correspond to different interfacial defect sizes, which, among other factors, are related to surface roughness. Read More
