Thank you to our peer reviewers in 2020.

J Cell Sci 2021 May 11;134(9). Epub 2021 May 11.

Executive Editor, Journal of Cell Science.

2020 was a challenging year for everyone. Labs and offices were closed, Zoom meetings abounded, and health and medical services were stretched to their limits. While we all struggled to learn new ways of working, Journal of Cell Science put in place measures to help our authors with their revisions as much as we could - we extended revision deadlines, reminded reviewers to limit requests for experimental revisions, and reinforced our scoop protection policy - you can read more about those measures here. Alloy engineering is efficient in modulating the electronic structure and physical and chemical properties of Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Here, we develop an efficient and simple confined-space CVD strategy by using a smaller quartz boat nested in a larger quartz boat for the preparation of ternary alloy MoS2(1-x)Se2x monolayers on SiO2/Si substrates with controllable composition. The effect of hydrogen ratio of the mixed carrier gas (Ar/H2) on the resultant flakes are systematically investigated. Read More

FPSN-FNCC: an accurate and fast motion tracking algorithm in 3D ultrasound for image guided interventions.

Phys Med Biol 2021 May 11. Epub 2021 May 11.

Insititute of Biomedical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen International Graduate School, Shenzhen, Shenzhen, GuangDong, CHINA.

Uncertain motions of target caused by breath, heartbeat and body drift of patient can increase the target locating error during image guided interventions, and that may cause additional surgery trauma. The surgery navigation system with accurate motion tracking is important for improving the operation accuracy and reducing trauma. In this work, we propose an accurate and fast tracking algorithm in three-dimension (3D) ultrasound (US) sequences for US guided surgery to achieve moving object tracking. Read More

The influence of patient size on the overall uncertainty in radiographic dose audit.

J Radiol Prot 2021 May 11. Epub 2021 May 11.

Department of Medical Physics, Ninewells Hospital and Medical School, Dundee, UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND.

The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of patient and cohort size on the overall uncertainty associated with dose audit using radiography of the abdomen as the exemplar. Water equivalent diameter Dw was used as the surrogate for patient size and its distribution (σ(Dw)) was used to quantify the effect of sample size. The more precise the KAP calibration, the more patients are required in the cohort to have the same impact on the overall uncertainty. Read More

Effects of conventionally-treated and ozonated wastewater on mortality, physiology, body length, and behavior of embryonic and larval zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Environ Pollut 2021 Apr 27;286:117241. Epub 2021 Apr 27.

Aquatic Ecology and Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU), University of Duisburg-Essen, Universitätsstr. 5, 45141, Essen, Germany.

To date, micropollutants from anthropogenic sources cannot be completely removed from effluents of wastewater treatment plants and therefore enter freshwater systems, where they may impose adverse effects on aquatic organisms, for example, on fish. Advanced treatment such as ozonation aims to reduce micropollutants in wastewater effluents and, thus, to mitigate adverse effects on the environment. To investigate the impact and efficiency of ozonation, four different water types were tested: ozonated wastewater (before and after biological treatment), conventionally-treated wastewater, and water from a river (River Ruhr, Germany) upstream of the wastewater treatment plant effluent.
