Evaluation of the impact of deep neuromuscular blockade on surgical conditions for laryngeal microsurgery with High Frequency Jet Ventilation. A comparison with no block during intravenous general anesthesia with topical lidocaine.

Am J Otolaryngol 2021 Sep 4;43(1):103187. Epub 2021 Sep 4.

Université catholique de Louvain, CHU UCL Namur, Department of Anesthesiology, Avenue Dr G Thérasse 1, 5530 Yvoir, Belgium.

Objective: Laryngeal transoral surgery classically requires a neuromuscular block (NMB) to facilitate tracheal intubation and to improve surgical conditions. However, the short duration of most procedures and the potential complications of residual NMB lead to consider a no block approach. The hypothesis that intravenous anesthesia (remifentanil and propofol infusions) without NMB but including glottis topical lidocaine anesthesia would allow clinically acceptable laryngeal exposure and good surgical conditions was tested in the specific context of procedures undergone with High Frequency Jet Ventilation (HFJV). Effect of ultrasound-guided selective sensory nerve blockade of the knee on pain management compared with periarticular injection for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty: A prospective randomized controlled trial.

Knee 2021 Sep 15;33:1-10. Epub 2021 Sep 15.

Department of Anesthesiology, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, The Thai Red Cross Society and Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Background: Ultrasound-guided selective sensory nerve blockade (SSNB) of the knee, including an adductor canal block (ACB), anterior femoral cutaneous nerve block, and infiltration between the popliteal artery and posterior capsule of the knee may provide effective motor-sparing knee analgesia for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We hypothesized that the SSNB would manage pain better on ambulation 24 hours postoperatively compared to periarticular infiltration (PAI), when combined with postoperative continuous ACB.

Methods: Seventy-two patients undergoing elective TKA under spinal anesthesia were randomly assigned to either SSNB (SSNB group) or intraoperative PAI (PAI group). Read More

NGN Healthcare - New Generation Nutraceuticals s.r.l., Torrette Via Nazionale 207, 83013 Mercogliano, Avellino, Italy. Electronic address:

Several studies reported an increase in cardiovascular risk (CVR) in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), considered primarily as the result of the combination of all the clinical features that characterize the syndrome, including hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity chronic low-grade inflammation. Interestingly, in 2012 it has been proposed the so-called DOGMA theory, suggesting the pivotal role played by microbiota alteration in the development of PCOS. Subsequently, several authors evidenced the existence in PCOS women of a marked dysbiosis, which is related to the development of metabolic diseases and cardiovascular complications, mainly due to the production of bacteria-derived metabolites that interfere with various pathways. Biosens Bioelectron 2021 Sep 3;194:113613. Epub 2021 Sep 3.

Institute of Photonics and Electronics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Chaberská 1014/57, 182 51 Prague, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

Microribonucleic acids (miRNAs) are short noncoding ribonucleic acids that have been linked with a multitude of human diseases including lung, breast, and hematological cancers. In this work, we present a novel, extremely sensitive assay for the label-free optical biosensor-based detection of miRNAs, which is based on the oligonucleotide-triggered release of nanoparticles from a sensor surface. We combine this assay (herein referred to as the nanoparticle-release (NPR) assay) with a surface plasmon resonance biosensor and show that the assay is able to enhance the specific sensor response associated with the binding of target miRNA while suppressing the interfering effects caused by the non-specific binding.
