Light-Addressable Square Wave Voltammetry (LASWV) Based on a Field-Effect Structure for Electrochemical Sensing and Imaging.

ACS Sens 2021 Apr 8. Epub 2021 Apr 8.

Institute of Medical Engineering, Department of Biophysics, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Health Science Center, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an 710061, China.

Here, we describe a new photoelectrochemical imaging method termed light-addressable square wave voltammetry (LASWV). It measures local SWV currents at an unstructured electrolyte/insulator/semiconductor (EIS) field-effect substrate by illuminating and addressing the substrate with an intensity-constant laser. Due to the continuous generation of charge carriers in the light-irradiated semiconductor, the drift and diffusion of photoinjected carriers within the semiconductor bulk would slow down the equilibrium processes of charge and discharge in one potential pulse cycle. Scanning ion conductance microscopy of isolated metaphase chromosomes in a liquid environment.

Chromosome Res 2021 Mar 11;29(1):95-106. Epub 2021 Mar 11.

Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Shizuoka University, Hamamatsu, 432-8561, Japan.

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) uses a probing tip which scans over a sample surface for obtaining information on the sample surface characteristics. Among various types of SPM, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been widely applied to imaging of biological samples including chromosomes. Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) has been also introduced for visualizing the surface structure of biological samples because it can obtain "contact-free" topographic images in liquid conditions by detecting ion current flow through a pipette opening. Influence of the Substrate, Process Conditions, and Postannealing Temperature on the Properties of ZnO Thin Films Grown by the Successive Ionic Layer Adsorption and Reaction Method.

ACS Omega 2021 Feb 21;6(4):2665-2674. Epub 2021 Jan 21.

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Saga University, Honjo, Saga 840-8502, Japan.

The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the preferential growth thin films along (002) and (101) planes of the wurtzite ZnO structure when deposited on SLG and Cu foil substrates, respectively. Both XRD and Raman spectra confirmed the ZnO and Cu-oxide phases of the deposited films. Read More

In this study, the physical and electrical characteristics of an AlN/4H-SiC Schottky barrier diode-based temperature sensor annealed in various gas atmospheres were investigated. An aluminum nitride (AlN) thin film was deposited on a 4H-SiC substrate via radio-frequency sputtering followed by annealing in N or O gas. The chemical composition of the film was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) before and after annealing, and its electrical properties were evaluated by plotting a current-voltage (I-V) curve. Universal Features of Non-equilibrium Ionic Currents through Perm-Selective Membranes: Gating by Charged Nanoparticles/Macromolecules for Robust Biosensing Applications.

J Phys Chem B 2021 02 7;125(7):1906-1915. Epub 2021 Jan 7.

Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana 46556, United States.

The presence of a small number (∼1000) of charged nanoparticles or macromolecules on the surface of an oppositely charged perm-selective membrane is shown to sensitively gate the ionic current through the membrane at a particular voltage, thus producing a voltage signal much larger than thermal noise. We show that, at sufficiently high voltages, surface vortices appear on the membrane surface and sustain an ion-depleted boundary layer that controls the diffusion length and ion current. An asymmetric vortex bifurcation occurs beyond a critical voltage to reduce the diffusion length and the differential resistance by half. Read More

Allometric Optimization of Enrofloxacin Dosage in Growing Male Turkeys: Empirical Evidence for Improved Internal Exposure.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences, ul. Norwida 31, 50-375 Wrocław, Poland.

Rapid weight gain in turkeys causes a major change in the pharmacokinetics of drugs, leading to age-dependent variability in the internal exposure and, possibly, treatment failure and/or selection for antimicrobial resistance in young individuals. The aim of the study was to investigate whether a non-linear dosing protocol that accounts for the previously established allometric relation between enrofloxacin clearance and body weight (BW) may optimize the internal exposure to enrofloxacin in growing male turkeys. Enrofloxacin was administered four times, between the age of 5 and 16. Read More

I-Lamp and Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, via dei Musei 41, 25121 Brescia, Italy.

Photovoltaic (PV) cells based on single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)/silicon (Si) and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Si junctions were tested under exposure to NH in the 0-21 ppm concentration range. The PV cell parameters remarkably changed upon NH exposure, suggesting that these junctions, while being operated as PV cells, can react to changes in the environment, thereby acting as NH gas sensors. Indeed, by choosing the open-circuit voltage, V, parameter as read-out, it was found that these cells behaved as gas sensors, operating at room temperature with a response higher than chemiresistors developed on the same layers.
