Here, we describe a new photoelectrochemical imaging method termed light-addressable square wave voltammetry (LASWV). It measures local SWV currents at an unstructured electrolyte/insulator/semiconductor (EIS) field-effect substrate by illuminating and addressing the substrate with an intensity-constant laser. Due to the continuous generation of charge carriers in the light-irradiated semiconductor, the drift and diffusion of photoinjected carriers within the semiconductor bulk would slow down the equilibrium processes of charge and discharge in one potential pulse cycle. Here, we report the effect of the substrate, sonication process, and postannealing on the structural, morphological, and optical properties of ZnO thin films grown in the presence of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) at temperature 30-65 °C by the successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method on both soda lime glass (SLG) and Cu foil. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirmed the preferential growth thin films along (002) and (101) planes of the wurtzite ZnO structure when deposited on SLG and Cu foil substrates, respectively. The presence of a small number (∼1000) of charged nanoparticles or macromolecules on the surface of an oppositely charged perm-selective membrane is shown to sensitively gate the ionic current through the membrane at a particular voltage, thus producing a voltage signal much larger than thermal noise. We show that, at sufficiently high voltages, surface vortices appear on the membrane surface and sustain an ion-depleted boundary layer that controls the diffusion length and ion current. An asymmetric vortex bifurcation occurs beyond a critical voltage to reduce the diffusion length and the differential resistance by half. Read More
