Materials (Basel) 2021 Jul 10;14(14). Epub 2021 Jul 10.

Center of Smart Materials Nanotechnology and Photonics (CSMNP), Smart CI Research Centre, Alexandria University, Alexandria 21544, Egypt.

Biodegradable nanofibrous hybrid membranes of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with ZnO and CuO nanoparticles were manufactured and characterized, and their anti-COVID-19 and anti-multidrug resistant bacteria activities were also evaluated. The morphological structures of the prepared PVA composites nanofibers were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), which revealed a homogenous pattern of the developed nanofibers, with an average fibrous diameter of 200-250 nm. Moreover, the results of the SEM showed that the fiber size changed with the type and the concentration of the metal oxide. Read More

The reaction of the dioxouranium(VI) ion with a series of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), namely mefenamic acid, indomethacin, diclofenac, diflunisal and tolfenamic acid, as ligands in the absence or presence of diverse N,N'-donors (1,10-phenanthroline,2,2'-bipyridine or 2,2'-bipyridylamine) as co-ligands led to the formation of ten complexes bearing the formulas [UO(NSAID-O,O')(O-donor)] or [UO(NSAID-O,O')(N,N'-donor)], respectively. The complexes were characterized with diverse spectroscopic techniques and the crystal structures of three complexes were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The biological profile of the resultant complexes was assessed in vitro and in silico. Read More

Prevalence and characterization of pertactin deficient strains in Brazil, a whole-cell vaccine country.

Vaccine X 2021 Aug 7;8:100103. Epub 2021 Jun 7.

Department of Immunology, Instituto Adolfo Lutz, São Paulo, Brazil.

Many countries have reported antigenic divergence among circulating strains, mainly in those countries which introduced the acellular pertussis (aP) vaccine. This phenomenon can be seen, for example, with the recent rise of pertactin (Prn)-deficient strains, one of the antigens included in aP vaccine formulas. The whole cell pertussis (wP) vaccine has been used in Brazil since 1977 for the primary pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus immunization series. Read More

Azobenzene disperse dyes are the fastest-growing class of dyestuffs, yet little is known about dye occurrences, sources, and transformations; azo dyes are also underrepresented in chemical standard catalogs, molecular databases, and mass spectral libraries. Many azo dyes are known to have sensitization, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. To fill these knowledge gaps, azo dyes were purified from dyestuffs by Soxhlet extraction and flash chromatography and characterized using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled to a high resolution Orbitrap Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer operated in positive electrospray ionization mode, as well as by H and C NMR. An Empirical Model for the Churning Losses Prediction of Fluid Flow Analysis in Axial Piston Pumps.

Micromachines (Basel) 2021 Apr 3;12(4). Epub 2021 Apr 3.

School of Mechanical Engineering, Yanshan University, Qinhuangdao 066004, China.

The manufacturing development of axial piston pumps usually takes the trend of high speed and miniaturization, and increases power density. Axial piston pumps are usually characterized as high speed to improve the power density; thus, high-speed churning losses caused by the internal rotating components stirring the oil can increase significantly. In order to improve the efficiency, more attention should be given to the churning losses in axial piston pumps, especially in high-speed conditions. Read More

Fjord systems in higher latitudes are unique coastal water ecosystems that facilitate the study of dissolved organic matter (DOM) dynamics from surface to deeper waters. The current work was undertaken in the Trondheim fjord characterized by North Atlantic waters, and compared DOM fractions from three depths - surface (3 m), intermediate (225 m) and deep (440 m) in four seasons, from late spring to winter in 2017. The high-resolution mass spectrometry data showed that DOM composition varies significantly in different seasons rather than in different depths in the fjord systems. Read More

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Tripodal Tris[4-(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene)methyl]amine Mesoionic Carbene Ligands and Their Complexation with Silver(I).

Inorg Chem 2021 Mar 25;60(6):3556-3564. Epub 2021 Feb 25.

Division of Chemistry and Biological Chemistry, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Nanyang Technological University, 21 Nanyang Link, Singapore 637371.

The conjugate acids of 1,2,3-triazolylidene mesoionic carbenes can be prepared in a straightforward fashion by alkylation of 1-substituted 1,2,3-triazoles. However, this becomes a much more challenging proposition when other nucleophilic centers are present, which has curtailed the development of ligands containing multiple 1,2,3-triazolylidene donors. Herein, methylation of a series of tris[(1-aryl-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)methyl]amines possessing both electron-rich and electron-deficient aromatic substituents, using MeOBF, is shown to proceed with much higher chemoselectivity under mechanochemical conditions than when conducted in solution.
