Single-dose immunisation with a multimerised SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) induces an enhanced and protective response in mice.

FEBS Lett 2021 Jul 31. Epub 2021 Jul 31.

MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has triggered a worldwide health emergency. Here, we show that ferritin-like Dps from hyperthermophilic Sulfolobus islandicus, covalently coupled with SARS-CoV-2 antigens via the SpyCatcher system, forms stable multivalent dodecameric vaccine nanoparticles that remain intact even after lyophilisation. Immunisation experiments in mice demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 receptor binding domain (RBD) coupled to Dps (RBD-S-Dps) elicited a higher antibody titre and an enhanced neutralising antibody response compared to monomeric RBD. Effect of EPS and its forms of aerobic granular sludge on sludge aggregation performance during granulation process based on XDLVO theory.

Sci Total Environ 2021 Jun 25;795:148682. Epub 2021 Jun 25.

Key Laboratory of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region's Eco-Environment, Ministry of Education, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400045, China; School of Environment and Ecology, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400045, China.

Different forms of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) play different roles in the formation process of aerobic granular sludge (AGS). This work focused on the contribution of loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS), tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) and EPS to the aggregation between sludge cells during the start-up of aerobic granular sludge in a sequencing batch reactor. By analyzing the changes of sludge surface characteristics before and after the extraction of each layer of EPS, the contribution of LB-EPS, TB-EPS and EPS to the adhesion and aggregation of sludge cells in the granulation was calculated by surface thermodynamics and the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory. Manganese-mediated hydrochemistry and microbiology in a meromictic subalpine lake (Lake Idro, Northern Italy) - A biogeochemical approach.

Sci Total Environ 2021 Jul 1;795:148743. Epub 2021 Jul 1.

Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico, RSE S.p.A., Department of Sustainable Development and Energy Sources, Via Rubattino 54, 20134 Milano, Italy.

This study presents the findings from several field campaigns carried out in Lake Idro (Northern Italy), a deep (124 m) meromictic-subalpine lake, whose water column is subdivided in a mixolimnion (~0-40 m) and a monimolimnion (~40-124 m). Hydrochemical data highlight two main peculiarities characterizing the Lake Idro meromixis: a) presence of a high manganese/iron ratio (up to 20 mol/mol), b) absence of a clear chemocline between the two main layers. The high manganese content contributed to the formation of a stable manganese dominated deep turbid stratum (40-65 m), enveloping the redoxcline (~45-55 m) in the upper monimolimnion. Read More

Resonating neurons stabilize heterogeneous grid-cell networks.

Elife 2021 Jul 30;10. Epub 2021 Jul 30.

Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Bangalore, India.

A central theme that governs the functional design of biological networks is their ability to sustain stable function despite widespread parametric variability. Here, we investigated the impact of distinct forms of biological heterogeneities on the stability of a two-dimensional continuous attractor network (CAN) implicated in grid-patterned activity generation. We show that increasing degrees of biological heterogeneities progressively disrupted the emergence of grid-patterned activity and resulted in progressively large perturbations in low-frequency neural activity. A Combined Study of Tc Redox Speciation in Complex Aqueous Systems: Wet-Chemistry, Tc K-/L-Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, and Ab Initio Calculations.

Inorg Chem 2021 Jul 30. Epub 2021 Jul 30.

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Institute for Nuclear Waste Disposal (INE), P.O. Box 3640, D-76021 Karlsruhe, Germany.

The combination of wet-chemistry experiments (measurements of pH, , and [Tc]) and advanced spectroscopic techniques (K- and L-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy) confirms the formation of a very stable Tc(V)-gluconate complex under anoxic conditions. In the presence of gluconate and an excess of Sn(II) (at pe + pH ≈ 2), technetium forms a very stable Tc(IV)-gluconate complex significantly enhancing the solubility defined by TcO(s) in hyperalkaline gluconate-free systems. A new setup for "tender" X-ray spectroscopy (spectral range, ∼2-5 keV) in transmission or total fluorescence yield detection mode based on a He flow cell has been developed at the INE Beamline for radionuclide science (KIT light source). N. A. Kosygin Russian State University (Technologies. Design. Art), 117997, Moscow, Russia,

The global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) has led to changes in advertising, marketing, advertising spending and media activities, forcing companies and brands to rethink their views on current and future advertising and marketing campaigns in order to maintain a stable revenue stream. This becomes even more important, because as a result of COVID-19, it is expected that starting in 2020, in the future, at least for the next 4-5 years, advertising costs for some advertisers will decrease as revenue decreases and the transition to other forms and channels of communication with the target audience of consumers. As a result, many brands may seek to optimize their marketing practices to better reflect the growth of online transactions, communication, and personal interaction time with consumers. Read More

Mechanical studies of the solid electrolyte interphase on anodes in lithium and lithium ion batteries.

Nanotechnology 2021 Jul 27. Epub 2021 Jul 27.

Department of Chemistry, University of Utah, Salt Lake City , Utah, UNITED STATES.

A stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is key to high performing lithium ion batteries for metrics such as calendar and cycle life. The SEI must be mechanically robust to withstand large volumetric changes in anode materials such as lithium and silicon, so understanding the mechanical properties and behavior of the SEI is essential for the rational design of artificial SEI and anode form factors. The mechanical properties and mechanical failure of the SEI are challenging to study, because the SEI is thin at only ~ 10 - 200 nm thick and is air sensitive. Read More

Dissecting primary and secondary senescence to enable new senotherapeutic strategies.

Ageing Res Rev 2021 Jul 21;70:101412. Epub 2021 Jul 21.

SENS Research Foundation, Mountain View, CA, USA; Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University, Loughborough, UK. Electronic address:

Cellular senescence is a state of stable cell cycle arrest that is known to be elicited in response to different stresses or forms of damage. Senescence limits the replication of old, damaged, and precancerous cells in the short-term but is implicated in diseases and debilities of aging due to loss of regenerative reserve and secretion of a complex combination of factors called the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). More recently, investigators have discovered that senescent cells induced by these methods (what we term "primary senescent cells") are also capable of inducing other non-senescent cells to undergo senescence - a phenomenon we call "secondary senescence.
