Measurement of the Population of Electrosprayed Deprotomers of Coumaric Acids Using UV-Vis Laser Photodissociation Spectroscopy.

J Phys Chem A 2021 Aug 3. Epub 2021 Aug 3.

Department of Chemistry, University of York, Heslington, York YO10 5DD, U.K.

The measurement of deprotonation sites in multifunctional molecules following electrospray ionization is important to better inform a wide range of spectroscopic and photophysical studies that use electrospray to prepare molecular species for study in the gas phase. We demonstrate that low-resolution UV-vis laser photodissociation spectroscopy can be applied to identify the deprotomers of three coumaric acids, -coumaric acid (CMA), caffeic acid (CA), and ferulic acid (FA), formed via electrospray. Electronic absorption spectra of the deprotonated coumaric acids are recorded via photodepletion and photofragmentation following electrospray from solutions of ethanol and acetonitrile. Read More

Evaluating polymer interplay after hot water pretreatment to investigate maize stem internode recalcitrance.

Biotechnol Biofuels 2021 Jul 31;14(1):164. Epub 2021 Jul 31.

Université de Reims Champagne Ardenne, INRAE, FARE, UMR A614, 51100, Reims, France.

Background: Biomass recalcitrance is governed by various molecular and structural factors but the interplay between these multiscale factors remains unclear. In this study, hot water pretreatment (HWP) was applied to maize stem internodes to highlight the impact of the ultrastructure of the polymers and their interactions on the accessibility and recalcitrance of the lignocellulosic biomass. The impact of HWP was analysed at different scales, from the polymer ultrastructure or water mobility to the cell wall organisation by combining complementary compositional, spectral and NMR analyses.
