In addition to the typical sexual size dimorphism, considerable size differences within the female population of the Chinese tongue sole (Cynoglossus semilaevis) have become a further bottleneck of the improvement of sole aquaculture. To identify the internal mechanism, transcriptomic analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were employed simultaneously. Transcriptomic analyses of brain, pituitary gland, liver, gonad, and muscle tissues from two female groups with size differences identified 109, 698, 1325, 2299, and 2141 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. Type-Specific Incidence, Persistence and Factors Associated with Human Papillomavirus Infection among Female Sex workers in Benin and Mali, West Africa.

Int J Infect Dis 2021 Apr 10. Epub 2021 Apr 10.

Département de Médecine Sociale et Préventive, Université Laval, Québec, Canada; Axe Santé des Populations et Pratiques Optimales en Santé, Centre de recherche du CHU de Québec - Université Laval, Québec, Canada; Institut national de santé publique du Québec, Québec, Canada. Electronic address:

Objectives: This study in female sex workers (FSWs) aimed (1) to estimate type-specific human papillomavirus (HPV) incidence and persistence in Cotonou (Benin) and Bamako (Mali); (2) to identify the factors associated with incident and persistent type-specific high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection.

Methods: A one-year prospective cohort study on cervical cancer screening, HPV and HIV infections was conducted among FSWs in Cotonou and Bamako, from 2017 to 2019. Poisson regression models assessed factors associated with HR-HPV incidence, while log-binomial regression was performed to identify factors associated with HR-HPV persistence. Read More

The influence of age, sex and cardiorespiratory fitness on maximal fat oxidation rate.

Appl Physiol Nutr Metab 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

University of Copenhagen, 4321, Department of biomedical sciences, Kobenhavn, Denmark;

Fat oxidation decreases age, yet, no studies have previously investigated if aging affects the maximal fat oxidation rate (MFO) during exercise in men and women differently. We hypothesized that increased age would be associated with a decline in MFO and this would be more pronounced in women due to the menopause, compared to men. In this cross-sectional study design, 435 (247/188, male /female) subjects of varying ages performed a DXA-scan, a submaximal graded exercise test and a V̇O2max test, to measure MFO and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) by indirect calorimetry. Factors of sexual quality of life in gynaecological cancers: a systematic literature review.

Arch Gynecol Obstet 2021 Apr 13. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

School of Health and Behavioural Sciences, University of the Sunshine Coast, 90 Sippy Downs Drive, Sunshine Coast, QLD, 4556, Australia.

Background: The impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on sexual quality of life (SQoL) is a well-established survivorship issue for gynaecological cancer survivors (GCS), yet little is known on how to intervene.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to identify the factors explaining the variability in SQoL for GCS.

Methods: We used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework and the software Covidence. Read More

Sexual dimorphism in mastoid process volumes measured from 3D models of dry crania from mediaeval Croatia.

Homo 2021 Apr 12. Epub 2021 Apr 12.

UCLA/Getty Conservation Programme, Cotsen Institute of Archaeology, UCLA, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

3D analysis of skeletal volumes has become an important field in digital anthropology studies. The volume of the mastoid process has been proposed to display significant sexual dimorphism, but it has a complex shape and to date no study has quantified the full mastoid volume for sex estimation purposes. In this study we compared three different ways to isolate the volume of the mastoid process from digital 3D models of dry crania, and then evaluated the performance of the three different volume definitions for sex estimation purposes.
