Seizure recurrence after prolonged seizure control: Patterns and risk factors.

Epilepsy Behav 2021 Oct 11;124:108330. Epub 2021 Oct 11.

Department of Neurology, George Washington University, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, United States.

Objective: To identify the patterns and possible predictors of seizure recurrence after durable seizure freedom during maintenance of anti-seizure medication (ASM) treatment.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective longitudinal study that identified all adult individuals with epilepsy (IWE) at the George Washington University outpatient epilepsy clinic between 1/1/2014 and 12/31/2016 who had been seizure free for at least 2 years. We followed up the patients until 5/30/2020 for seizure recurrence. Read More

To the Editor: Pathophysiology of splenic arteriovenous fistula.

Ann Vasc Surg 2021 Oct 11. Epub 2021 Oct 11.

Cardiology, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; Italy.

A splenic arteriovenous fistula causes a 'pre-hepatic' hypertension in the portal venous system with the double mechanism of an increased blood amount and mainly its high pressure inflow. It aggravates for a secondary fibrosis of the portal vein branches and 'capillarization' of the hepatic sinusoids, adding a further 'intra-hepatic' component. The subsequent development of porto-systemic collaterals induces the risk of gastrointestinal hemorrhages All this suggests to perform a close monitoring of every case of splanchnic aneurysm or pseudo-aneurysm, through the current cross-section imaging tools, for their possible evolution in an arteriovenous fistula, and to consider an early therapy, also endovascular, before any secondary damage of the liver parenchyma. Comparison of Dosimetric Benefits of Three Precise Radiotherapy Techniques in Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Patients Using a Priority-Classified Plan Optimization Model.

Front Oncol 2021 27;11:646584. Epub 2021 Sep 27.

Department of Radiotherapy, Yunnan Cancer Hospital, the Third Affiliated Hospital of Kunming Medical University, Kunming, China.

Introduction: Although intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and tomotherapy (TOMO) are broadly applied for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the best technique remains unclear. Therefore, this study was conducted to address this issue.

Methods: The priority-classified plan optimization model was applied to IMRT, VMAT and TOMO plans in forty NPC patients according to the latest international guidelines. Read More

Successful Treatment of Rhabdomyolysis-Associated Acute Kidney Injury with Haemoadsorption and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy.

Case Rep Pediatr 2021 4;2021:2148024. Epub 2021 Oct 4.

Department of Pediatrics, The University of Calgary and The Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary, AB T2M 0H5, Canada.

We report two children with rhabdomyolysis-associated acute kidney injury who were successfully treated with a haemoadsorption column CytoSorb® in addition to continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). A 14-year-old girl with multiorgan failure requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation developed rhabdomyolysis due to reperfusion injury. Her creatine kinase (CK) and lactate levels continued to escalate despite high-dose CRRT. Read More

β2-and β3-Adrenergic Receptors Contribute to Cancer-Evoked Pain in a Mouse Model of Osteosarcoma Modulation of Neural Macrophages.

Front Pharmacol 2021 27;12:697912. Epub 2021 Sep 27.

Division of Pediatric Oncology/Hematology, Meyer University Children's Hospital, Florence, Italy.

The mechanisms involved in the development and maintenance of cancer pain remain largely unidentified. Recently, it has been reported that β-adrenergic receptors (β-ARs), mainly β2-and β3-ARs, contribute to tumor proliferation and progression and may favor cancer-associated pain and neuroinflammation. However, the mechanism underlying β-ARs in cancer pain is still unknown. Read More
