The journey of tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) as a biomarker in breast cancer: clinical utility in an era of checkpoint inhibition.

Ann Oncol 2021 Jul 23. Epub 2021 Jul 23.

Division of Research, Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne, Australia; Department of Pathology, GZA-ZNA Hospitals, Antwerp, Belgium.

In 2014, we described a method to quantify percentage of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) on haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slides of breast cancer samples using light microscopy that could be performed easily by pathologists with no extra stains. The aim of detailing the method was to facilitate independent research groups replicating our prognostic findings using TIL quantity in early-stage breast cancers. A global working group of breast pathologists was convened to standardize, test reproducibility, and refine the method. Read More

Osteohistology of Greererpeton provides insight into the life history of an early Carboniferous tetrapod.

J Anat 2021 Jul 26. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Museum of Comparative Zoology and Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA.

The vertebrate transition to land is one of the most consequential, yet poorly understood periods in tetrapod evolution. Despite the importance of the water-land transition in establishing modern ecosystems, we still know very little about the life histories of the earliest tetrapods. Bone histology provides an exceptional opportunity to study the biology of early tetrapods and has the potential to reveal new insights into their life histories. Read More

Wearable RF Near-Field Cough Monitoring by Frequency-Time Deep Learning.

IEEE Trans Biomed Circuits Syst 2021 Jul 26;PP. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Coughing is a common symptom for many respiratory disorders, and can spread droplets of various sizes containing bacterial and viral pathogens. Mild coughs are usually overlooked in the early stage, not only because they are barely noticeable by the person and the people around, but also because the present recording method is not comfortable, private, or reliable for long-term monitoring. In this paper, a wearable radio-frequency (RF) sensor is presented to recognize the mild cough signal directly from the local trachea vibration characteristics, and can isolate interferences from nearby people. [Effects of Coconut Chaff Biochar Amendment on Methane and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Paddy Fields in Hot Areas].

Huan Jing Ke Xue 2021 Aug;42(8):3931-3942

College of Tropical Crops, Hainan University, Haikou 570228, China.

Based on the rice-vegetable crop rotation model, in-situ measurements of nitrous oxide (NO) and methane (CH) emissions were conducted in double-cropping rice fields in Hainan to determine the impact of coconut chaff biochar on greenhouse gas emissions. The experiment involved four treatments:conventional farming fertilization (CON), nitrogen fertilizer combined with 20 t ·hm biochar (B1), nitrogen fertilizer combined with 40 t ·hm biochar (B2), and no nitrogen fertilizer, as the control (CK). The NO and CH emissions were measured using static chamber-gas chromatography during the two paddy seasons, and the global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) were also estimated. ATF3 induces RAB7 to govern autodegradation in paligenosis, a conserved cell plasticity program.

EMBO Rep 2021 Jul 26:e51806. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO, USA.

Differentiated cells across multiple species and organs can re-enter the cell cycle to aid in injury-induced tissue regeneration by a cellular program called paligenosis. Here, we show that activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) is induced early during paligenosis in multiple cellular contexts, transcriptionally activating the lysosomal trafficking gene Rab7b. ATF3 and RAB7B are upregulated in gastric and pancreatic digestive-enzyme-secreting cells at the onset of paligenosis Stage 1, when cells massively induce autophagic and lysosomal machinery to dismantle differentiated cell morphological features. Background: MRI is the most effective diagnostic tool of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), especially for early diagnosis, but its detection of subchondral or cortical fractures is less accurate than CT. Therefore, it is difficult to accurately stage ONFH in the peri-collapse period by MRI.

Purpose: To improve the accuracy of MR for distinguishing between Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) stages 2 and 3A in ONFH. Read More

miRNA-34 and miRNA-210 target hexamerin genes enhancing their differential expression during early brain development of honeybee (Apis mellifera) castes.

Insect Mol Biol 2021 Jul 26. Epub 2021 Jul 26.

Departamento de Biologia Celular e do Desenvolvimento, Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas, Universidade Federal de Alfenas, UNIFAL-MG, Alfenas, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

During the honeybee larval stage, queens develop larger brains than workers, with morphological differentiation appearing at the fourth larval phase (L4), just after a boost in nutritional difference both prospective females experience. The molecular promoters of this caste-specific brain development are already ongoing in previous larval phases. Transcriptomic analyses revealed a set of differentially expressed genes in the L3 brains of queens and workers, which represents the early molecular response to differential feeding females receive during larval development.
