The influence of elevated SiO (aq) on intracellular silica uptake and microbial metabolism.

Microbes are known to accumulate intracellular SiO (aq) up to 100s of mmol/l from modern seawater (SiO (aq) <100 µmol/l), despite having no known nutrient requirement for Si. Before the evolution of siliceous skeletons, marine silica concentrations were likely an order of magnitude higher than the modern ocean, raising the possibility that intracellular SiO (aq) accumulation interfered with normal cellular function in non-silicifying algae. Yet, because few culturing studies have isolated the effects of SiO (aq) at high concentration, the potential impact of elevated marine silica on early microbial evolution is unknown. Read More

Chen Ziying and Woods Hole: Bringing the Marine Biological Laboratory to Amoy, China, 1930-1936.

This article examines Chen Ziying, an American-trained Chinese biologist and his prewar efforts to bring his Woods Hole experience from the United States to China between 1930 and 1936. I argue that the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) appears as a prominent American scientific institution in the twentieth century among visiting Chinese students and scholars who were drawn to the American approach of building world-class seaside laboratories to facilitate marine biological study while cultivating a collaborative culture via songs of biology. Chen was one of the leading US-trained Chinese scientists who aspired to the international trend of developing coastal biology in the early twentieth century and was determined to modernize China's discipline-building of biology with the construction of marine research facilities similar to the MBL. Malignant melanoma (M) can be defined, quite simply, as a malignant neoplasm derived from melanocytes; however, there is great histological and, consequently, clinical variability from case to case (1). In order to try to overcome this intrinsic difficulty, various classification systems have been proposed over the years; as part of this effort, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced its famous classification about half a century ago (2). Currently, the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), provided by the WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), distinguishes the in situ forms from invasive ones, recognizing four main morphological subtypes: nodular M, superficial spreading M, lentigo maligna M, and acral lentiginous M (3). The first measurement of longitudinal decorrelations of harmonic flow amplitudes v_{n} for n=2-4 in Xe+Xe collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.44  TeV is obtained using 3  μb^{-1} of data with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The decorrelation signal for v_{3} and v_{4} is found to be nearly independent of collision centrality and transverse momentum (p_{T}) requirements on final-state particles, but for v_{2} a strong centrality and p_{T} dependence is seen. Truncated bimodal latitudinal diversity gradient in early Paleozoic phytoplankton.

The latitudinal diversity gradient (LDG)-the decline in species richness from the equator to the poles-is classically considered as the most pervasive macroecological pattern on Earth, but the timing of its establishment, its ubiquity in the geological past, and explanatory mechanisms remain uncertain. By combining empirical and modeling approaches, we show that the first representatives of marine phytoplankton exhibited an LDG from the beginning of the Cambrian, when most major phyla appeared.
