In vivo 3D Power Doppler Imaging Using Continuous Translation and Ultrafast Ultrasound.

IEEE Trans Biomed Eng 2021 Jul 29;PP. Epub 2021 Jul 29.

The introduction of ultrafast ultrasound and spatiotemporal filtering has significantly improved the sensitivity of Doppler ultrasound imaging. This work describes the development of a novel 3D power Doppler imaging technique which uses a 1D-array ultrasound probe that mechanically translates at a constant speed. The continuous translation allows for a fast scan of a large 3D volume without requiring complex hardware. Read More

The SIC protocol: A seven-step strategy to minimize complications potentially related to the insertion of centrally inserted central catheters.

J Vasc Access 2021 Jul 29:11297298211036002. Epub 2021 Jul 29.

Catholic Medical Center - Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital, Colebrook, NH, USA.

Insertion of central venous catheters in the cervico-thoracic area is potentially associated with the risk of immediate/early untoward events, some of them negligible (repeated punctures), some relevant (accidental arterial puncture), and some severe (pneumothorax). Furthermore, different strategies adopted during insertion may reduce or increase the incidence of late catheter-related complications (infection, venous thrombosis, dislodgment). This paper describes a standardized protocol (S. Read More

A novel approach of combining the tunnel technique with a double papilla flap or a coronally positioned flap for the treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions: report of two cases.

Int J Esthet Dent 2021 Aug;16(3):338-348

The treatment of multiple gingival recessions (GRs) is often challenging for clinicians, mainly due to a larger avascular surface, limited blood supply, differences in recession depth, and residual keratinized tissue. Considering these factors, it may be prudent to take advantage of one surgical technique and overcome its limitations by combining it with another technique in certain clinical situations. The present clinical report describes the treatment of multiple GRs of different depths with a combination of the tunnel technique (TUN) and pedicle flap (PED) - double papilla flap (DPF) or coronally positioned flap (CPF) - in conjunction with deepithelialized connective tissue grafts in two patients. The injectable composite resin technique: biocopy of a natural tooth - advantages of digital planning.

Int J Esthet Dent 2021 Aug;16(3):280-299

The injectable composite resin technique is a minimally invasive and purely additive procedure that uses a transparent silicone index and flowable composite resin to translate the restorative plan from the wax-up to the final restoration. Its minimally invasive nature means that it can preserve tooth structure as it may not require hard tissue reduction. It is also an indirect/direct molding technique that allows the clinician to perform a direct restoration based on a proper analysis and planning. Read More

Reimplantation valve-sparing aortic root replacement is the most durable approach to facilitate aortic valve repair.

Tirone David

JTCVS Tech 2021 Jun 28;7:72-78. Epub 2021 Jan 28.

Division of Cardiac Surgery of University Health Network, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Reimplantation of the aortic valve has been performed for 3 decades, and experience shows that patient selection and meticulous operative technique are crucial to provide excellent clinical outcomes and stable aortic valve function for decades. More than the type of the Dacron graft used for the reimplantation (straight graft or Valsalva graft), we believe that attention to certain technical aspects of this operation is key to a successful and durable aortic valve reconstruction. This article describes the operative procedure as we believe it should be performed based on a learned experience with several hundred cases and summarizes the latest outcomes in a large cohort of patients followed prospectively during the past 3 decades. 4-Dimensional Velocity Mapping Cardiac Magnetic Resonance of Extracardiac Bypass for Aortic Coarctation Repair.

JACC Case Rep 2019 Jun 4;1(1):17-20. Epub 2019 Jun 4.

Gabriele Monasterio Tuscany Foundation, Pisa and Massa, Italy.

This report describes a case of a young lady who, following extracardiac bypass between ascending and descending aorta for severe aortic coarctation, underwent 4-dimensional flow cardiac magnetic resonance, a technique that, by 3-dimensional flow assessment over time (4-dimensional), allows not only quantification of flows but also wall shear stress. In this case, increased wall shear stress was observed in the conduit's acute angle (kinking) as well as at the distal anastomosis level. The authors postulate that increased wall shear stress could help identify and risk stratify adult congenital heart disease who could develop vascular complications in the future. Read More

Comparison of Two Different Synthesis Methods of Single Crystals of Superconducting Uranium Ditelluride.

J Vis Exp 2021 Jul 8(173). Epub 2021 Jul 8.

Maryland Quantum Materials Center, Department of Physics, University of Maryland; National Institute of Standards and Technology;

Single crystal specimens of the actinide compound uranium ditelluride, UTe2, are of great importance to the study and characterization of its dramatic unconventional superconductivity, believed to entail spin-triplet electron pairing. A variety in the superconducting properties of UTe2 reported in the literature indicates that discrepancies between synthesis methods yield crystals with different superconducting properties, including the absence of superconductivity entirely. This protocol describes a process to synthesize crystals that exhibit superconductivity via chemical vapor transport, which has consistently exhibited a superconducting critical temperature of 1. The osteoplastic flap technique is the open and direct approach to the frontal sinus and is especially useful when disease extends laterally into the frontal sinus. One of the vital steps of surgery is delineation of the boundary of the frontal sinus. This can usually be performed either by using the classical 6-ft Caldwell view X-ray template or more recently by application of the image-guided navigation system. Read More

Nerve conduction block is an appealing way to selective target the nervous system for treating pathological conditions. Several modalities were described in the past, with the kilohertz frequency stimulation generating an enormous interest and tested successfully in clinical settings. Some shortcomings associated with different modalities of nerve blocking can limit its clinical use, as the "onset response", the high demand of energy supply, among others. Read More

Characterization of Paramagnetic Iron-Sulfur Clusters Using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

Troy A Stich

Methods Mol Biol 2021 ;2353:259-280

Department of Chemistry, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC, USA.

Continuous-wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is a powerful ally in characterizing the multitude of redox-active iron-sulfur cluster-containing ([Fe-S]) species present in biological samples. The technique detects only those clusters that are paramagnetic-having a nonzero total electron spin (S > 0)-thus, it can discriminate between clusters in different oxidation states. The low-temperature CW-EPR spectrum of an [Fe-S] yields the three magnetic g-values that serve as a fingerprint of its electronic structure. Read More
