Curr Oncol 2021 May 5;28(3):1718-1727. Epub 2021 May 5.

Surgical Science Department, Medical School, University "Tor Vergata", 00133 Rome, Italy.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common malignancy skin cancer. It is characterized by abnormal, accelerated growth of squamous cells (SCs). SCC occurs when DNA damage from exposure to ultraviolet radiation or other damaging agents trigger abnormal changes in the SCs, presenting as painless lesions on areas of high sun exposure, such as the dorsum of the hand and upper extremity. Background: Bevacizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that has been used as a systemic chemotherapy treatment of various malignancies in adults since 2000. It has been used for pediatric patients over the last decade. In addition, bevacizumab is used for neonatal intravitreal administration for retinopathy of prematurity, a major complication of preterm birth, characterized by incomplete and abnormal vascularization of the retina that can lead to retinal detachment and blindness without treatment. Department of Burns, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Jingxi Street, Baiyun District, Guangzhou, 510515, PR China.

Although employed to release growth factors (GFs) for regenerative medicine, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been hindered by issues like burst effect. Based on collagen sponge scaffolds (CSSs) modified with polydopamine (pDA), a novel dermal regeneration template (DRT) was designed. However, whether it could efficiently deliver PRP and even foster wound healing remained unclear. Read More

Coffee Bean Polyphenols Can Form Biocompatible Template-free Antioxidant Nanoparticles with Various Sizes and Distinct Colors.

ACS Omega 2021 Feb 18;6(4):2767-2776. Epub 2021 Jan 18.

Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, Al-Zaytoonah University of Jordan, Amman 11733, Jordan.

Plant polyphenols have attracted attention in recent years due to their ability to undergo oxidative coupling reactions enabled by the presence of multiple phenolic hydroxyl groups, forming chemically versatile coatings and biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs) for various applications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether coffee bean aqueous extracts, which are known to be rich in polyphenols, could serve as a natural source of NP building blocks. Extracts were prepared by heating ground Arabica beans of varying roasting degrees in water with or without the addition of sodium metaperiodate or copper sulfate as an oxidizing agent, followed by filtration. Release of pseudosyndactyly in recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa using a dermal regeneration template glove: the Foggia experience.

Orphanet J Rare Dis 2021 01 28;16(1):52. Epub 2021 Jan 28.

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Ospedali Riuniti University of Foggia, Viale Pinto1, 71100, Foggia, Italy.

Background: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) comprises a heterogeneous group of rare genetic diseases associated with skin blistering caused by minimal trauma. A major and common EB subtype, recessive dystrophic EB (RDEB), is characterized by altered wound healing, inflammatory dysbalance and fibrotic changes associated with reduced to absent collagen VII. Because of its exposed position and its continued use in daily activities, the hand is constantly at risk of microtrauma and is therefore one of the organs most affected by the disease with highly disabling deformities that represent a challenging field in hand surgery practice. Skin regeneration is accelerated by a lower dose of multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cells-a paradigm change.

Stem Cell Res Ther 2021 01 25;12(1):82. Epub 2021 Jan 25.

Sunnybrook Research Institute, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada.

Background: Multipotent mesenchymal stromal/stem cell (MSC) therapy is under investigation in promising (pre-)clinical trials for wound healing, which is crucial for survival; however, the optimal cell dosage remains unknown. The aim was to investigate the efficacy of different low-to-high MSC dosages incorporated in a biodegradable collagen-based dermal regeneration template (DRT) Integra®.

Methods: We conducted a porcine study (N = 8 Yorkshire pigs) and seeded between 200 and 2,000,000 cells/cm of umbilical cord mesenchymal stromal/stem cells on the DRT and grafted it onto full-thickness burn excised wounds. Read More

Authors:

Zhonghua Shao Shang Za Zhi 2020 Oct;36(10):895-900

Natural dermal matrix has good biocompatibility and can serve as " biological template" in wound repair. According to the source of material, natural dermal matrix can be divided into acellular dermal matrix (ADM), denatured dermal matrix, and scar dermal matrix. ADM is a biological material prepared by removing cellular components from the skin and retaining extracellular matrix (ECM) of the dermis. Read More

Surgical Reconstruction following Wide Local Excision of Malignant Melanoma of the Scalp.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open 2020 Aug 26;8(8):e3059. Epub 2020 Aug 26.

Clinica di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Ospedale Policlinico San Martino e Sezione di Chirurgia Plastica, Dipartimento di Scienze Chirurgiche e Diagnostiche Integrate-DISC, Università degli Studi di Genova, Genova, Italy.

Adipose Stem Cells and Platelet-Rich Plasma Induce Vascular-Like Structures in a Dermal Regeneration Template.

Tissue Eng Part A 2021 05 12;27(9-10):631-641. Epub 2020 Oct 12.

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Foggia, Foggia, Italy.

In the context of biointeractive dressings used for enhancing wound healing, the use of stromal vascular fraction (SVF) or adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) hereof derived has not been fully exploited yet. Noncultured SVF, a heterogeneous mesenchymal population of cells, is attractive in the field of dermal regeneration because it can be instantaneously obtained, avoids genomic alterations, and is comparatively safer than cultured ASCs. Integra Dermal Regeneration Template (DRT) was sprinkled with ASCs in complete medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), or SVF, obtained from emulsified or nonemulsified fat, in medium supplemented with 2% platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Placement of Dermal Regeneration Template on Fibrotic Dura.

Cureus 2020 Jul 14;12(7):e9185. Epub 2020 Jul 14.

Plastic Surgery, Creighton University School of Medicine, Phoenix, USA.

We report the case of a male presenting with a large, fungating Marjolin ulcer over a prior craniectomy defect that had undergone several attempts at reconstruction. On presentation, he had a large area of exposed, fibrotic dura that ultimately required excision of the outer layer prior to placement of Integra (Integra LifeSciences, Plainsboro, NJ) and subsequent split-thickness skin grafting. Although there have been four other reports of dermal regeneration templates being used on exposed dura, this is the first case report of one being used on exposed dura that required dural preparation prior to placement.
