Downsizing of Block Polymer-Templated Nanopores to One Nanometer via Hyper-Cross-Linking of High χ-Low Precursors.

ACS Nano 2021 May 5. Epub 2021 May 5.

Department of Chemistry, KAIST, Daejeon 34141, Korea.

Synthesizing nanoporous polymer from the block polymer template by selective removal of the sacrificial domain offers straightforward pore size control as a function of the degree of polymerization (). Downscaling pore size into the microporous regime (<2 nm) has been thermodynamically challenging, because the low drives the system to disorder and the small-sized pore is prone to collapse. Herein, we report that maximizing cross-linking density of a block polymer precursor with an increased interaction parameter (χ) can help successfully stabilize the structure bearing pore sizes of 1. Degradability of Polyurethanes and Their Blends with Polylactide, Chitosan and Starch.

Polymers (Basel) 2021 Apr 8;13(8). Epub 2021 Apr 8.

Department of Industrial Product Quality and Chemistry, Gdynia Maritime University, 83 Morska Street, 81-225 Gdynia, Poland.

One of the methods of making traditional polymers more environmentally friendly is to modify them with natural materials or their biodegradable, synthetic equivalents. It was assumed that blends with polylactide (PLA), polysaccharides: chitosan (Ch) and starch (St) of branched polyurethane (PUR) based on synthetic poly([R,S]-3-hydroxybutyrate) (R,S-PHB) would degrade faster in the processes of hydrolysis and oxidation than pure PUR. For the sake of simplicity in the publication, all three modifiers: commercial PLA, Ch created by chemical modification of chitin and St are called bioadditives. Read More

Cross-Linked Covalent Organic Framework-Based Membranes with Trimesoyl Chloride for Enhanced Desalination.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2021 Apr 29. Epub 2021 Apr 29.

State Key Laboratory of Heavy Oil Processing, Beijing Key Laboratory of Oil & Gas Pollution Control, China University of Petroleum, Beijing 102249, China.

The rational design of continuous covalent organic framework (COF)-based membranes is challenging for desalination applications, mainly due to the larger intrinsic pore size of COFs and defects in the crystalline film, which lead to a negligible NaCl rejection ratio. In this work, we first demonstrated a COF-based desalination membrane with in situ cross-linking of a COF-TpPa layer by trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to stitch the defects between COF crystals and cross-link the COF cavity with high-cross-linking degree networks to enhance NaCl rejection. With the addition of TMC monomers, both small spherical nodules and some elongated "leaf-like" features were observed on the membrane surface due to the appearance of nanovoids during cross-linking. Rapid membrane repair is required to ensure cell survival after rupture of the plasma membrane. The annexin family of proteins is involved in plasma membrane repair (PMR) and is activated by the influx of Ca from the extracellular medium at the site of injury. Annexins A1 and A2 (ANXA1 and ANXA2, respectively) are structurally similar and bind to negatively charged phosphatidylserine (PS) to induce membrane cross-linking and to promote fusion, which are both essential processes that occur during membrane repair. Salt partitioning in ionized, thermo-responsive hydrogels: perspective to water desalination.

J Chem Phys 2021 Apr;154(14):144902

Department of Chemistry, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, D-55128 Mainz, Germany.

Charged hydrogels are capable of swelling in aqueous salt solutions, whereby part of the salt ions is repelled due to the presence of fixed charged groups inside the hydrogel. This effect creates a concentration gradient between the absorbed solution and the surrounding fluid known as salt partitioning, offering a potential for these materials to be employed to desalinate saltwater. If the charged hydrogels are thermo-sensitive as well, then the purer, absorbed solution can be recovered by shrinking the hydrogels upon temperature change. Read More

Key Laboratory of Engineering Dielectrics and Its Application, Ministry of Education, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Harbin University of Science and Technology, Harbin 150080, China.

Trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) as a photoactive crosslinker is grafted onto hydrophobic nanosilica surface through click chemical reactions of mercapto double bonds to prepare the functionalized nanoparticles (TMPTA-s-SiO), which are used to develop TMPTA-s-SiO/XLPE nanocomposites with improvements in mechanical strength and electrical resistance. The expedited aging experiments of water-tree growth are performed with a water-knife electrode and analyzed in consistence with the mechanical performances evaluated by means of dynamic thermo-mechanical analysis (DMA) and tensile stress-strain characteristics. Due to the dense cross-linking network of polyethylene molecular chains formed on the TMPTA-modified surfaces of SiO nanofillers, TMPTA-s-SiO nanofillers are chemically introduced into XLPE matrix to acquire higher crosslinking degree and connection strength in the amorphous regions between polyethylene lamellae, accounting for the higher water-tree resistance and ameliorated mechanical performances, compared with pure XLPE and neat-SiO/XLPE nanocomposite. Transparent Polyaniline Thin Film Synthesized Using a Low-Voltage-Driven Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Reactor.

Materials (Basel) 2021 Mar 8;14(5). Epub 2021 Mar 8.

School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, College of IT Engineering, Kyungpook National University, Daegu 41566, Korea.

The use of low-voltage-driven plasma in atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma polymerization is considered as a simple approach to reducing the reactivity of the monomer fragments in order to prevent excessive cross-linking, which would have a negative effect on the structural properties of the polymerized thin films. In this study, AP-plasma polymerization can be processed at low voltage by an AP-plasma reactor with a wire electrode configuration. A bare tungsten wire is used as a powered electrode to initiate discharge in the plasma area (defined as the area between the wide glass tube and the substrate stand), thus allowing plasma polymerization to proceed at a lower voltage compared to other AP-plasma reactors with dielectric barriers.
