Efficient recovery of phosphorus and sulfur from Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR) permeate using chemical addition of iron and evaluation of its nutrient availability for plant uptake.

Sci Total Environ 2021 Apr 1;783:146850. Epub 2021 Apr 1.

Department of Civil Engineering, Kansas State University, 2118 Fiedler Hall, 1701C Platt St., Manhattan, KS 66506, USA.

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) represent an emerging environmental biotechnology platform with the potential to simultaneously recover water, energy, and nutrients from concentrated wastewaters. The removal and beneficial capture of nutrients from AnMBR permeate has yet to be fully explored, therefore this study sought to foster iron phosphate recovery through a tertiary coagulation process, as well as characterize the recovered nutrient product (RNP) and assess its net phosphorus release, diffusion, and availability for plant uptake. One of the primary goals of this study was to optimize the dose of the coagulant, ferric chloride, and coagulant aid, aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH), for continuous application to the coagulation-flocculation-sedimentation (CFS) unit of an AnMBR pilot plant treating municipal wastewater, through controlled bench-scale jar tests. Development of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose based polymeric microparticles for in situ hydrogel wound dressing formation.

Int J Pharm 2021 Apr 13:120606. Epub 2021 Apr 13.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Perugia, via del Liceo 1, 06123 Perugia, Italy. Electronic address:

18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (Gly), a natural compound obtained from licorice, is known both for the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities and for this reason useful for wound treatment. Due to its poor solubility, Gly is not suitable for formulations used in conventional topical products such as gels, foams and creams. Polymeric bioadhesive microparticles (MP), loaded with Gly, were developed to be introduced in the wound bed and swell, once in contact with the exudate, to form a hydrogel in situ able to close the wound. Smart Layer-by-Layer Polymeric Microreactors: pH-Triggered Drug Release and Attenuation of Cellular Oxidative Stress as Prospective Combination Therapy.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2021 Apr 16. Epub 2021 Apr 16.

Department of Mining-Metallurgy Engineering and Materials Science, POLYMAT, Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Plaza Torres Quevedo 1, 48013 Bilbao, Spain.

Polymer capsules fabricated the layer-by-layer (LbL) approach have emerged as promising biomedical systems for the release of a wide variety of therapeutic agents, owing to their tunable and controllable structure and the possibility to include several functionalities in the polymeric membrane during the fabrication process. However, the limitation of the capsules with a single functionality to overcome the challenges involved in the treatment of complex pathologies denotes the need to develop multifunctional capsules capable of targeting several mediators and/or mechanisms. Oxidative stress is caused by the accumulation of reactive oxygen species [, hydrogen peroxide (HO), hydroxyl radicals (OH), and superoxide anion radicals (O)] in the cellular microenvironment and is a key modulator in the pathology of a broad range of inflammatory diseases. Effect of citalopram on hippocampal volume in first-episode schizophrenia: Structural MRI results from the DECIFER trial.

Psychiatry Res Neuroimaging 2021 Apr 7;312:111286. Epub 2021 Apr 7.

Department of Psychiatry, NYU Langone Health, 1 Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016, United States of America; Nathan Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research, 140 Old Orangeburg Road, Orangeburg, NY 10962, United States of America. Electronic address:

Hippocampal volume loss is prominent in first episode schizophrenia (FES) and has been associated with poor clinical outcomes and with BDNF genotype; antidepressants are believed to reverse hippocampal volume loss via release of BDNF. In a 12-month, placebo-controlled add-on trial of the antidepressant, citalopram, during the maintenance phase of FES, negative symptoms were improved with citalopram. We now report results of structural brain imaging at baseline and 6 months in 63 FES patients (34 in citalopram group) from the trial to assess whether protection against hippocampal volume loss contributed to improved negative symptoms with citalopram. 3D Printed Bioceramic Scaffolds as a Universal Therapeutic Platform for Synergistic Therapy of Osteosarcoma.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces 2021 Apr 15. Epub 2021 Apr 15.

Laboratory of Biomaterials and Translational Medicine, Center for Nanomedicine, The Third Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510630, China.

The postoperative tumor recurrence and chemotherapy resistance in clinical osteosarcoma treatment have raised an imperative need to develop local implants for selectively killing residual tumor cells and simultaneously provide a scaffold for effectively filling the tumor resection-induced bone defects. Herein, a multifunctional platform is developed through successively coating TiN microparticles and doxorubicin (DOX) on the surface of tricalcium phosphate (TCP) scaffolds to achieve synergetic effects of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy for osteosarcoma. The content of TiN and DOX in the scaffolds can be flexibly adjusted by immersing the scaffolds into the solution containing different concentrations of TiN and DOX. Read More
