Short-Term Prediction of Preeclampsia in Chinese Women Using the Soluble fms-Like Tyrosine Kinase 1/Placental Growth Factor Ratio: A Sub-Analysis of the PROGNOSIS Asia Study.

Front Cardiovasc Med 2021 23;8:602560. Epub 2021 Aug 23.

Roche Diagnostics International Ltd, Rotkreuz, Switzerland.

The diagnosis of preeclampsia in China currently relies on limited clinical signs and unspecific laboratory findings. These are inadequate predictors of preeclampsia development, limiting early diagnosis and appropriate management. Previously, the Prediction of Short-Term Outcome in Pregnant Women with Suspected Preeclampsia Study (PROGNOSIS) and PROGNOSIS Asia demonstrated that a soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1)/placental growth factor (PlGF) ratio of ≤38 can be used to rule out preeclampsia within 1 week, with negative predictive values of 99. Perspectives on administration of COVID-19 vaccine to pregnant and lactating women: a challenge for low- and middle-income countries.

AJOG Glob Rep 2021 Sep 3:100020. Epub 2021 Sep 3.

Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit, Gold Coast University Hospital and School of Medicine, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

Women in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle or those who are lactating have been deliberately excluded from participating in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials that aimed to evaluate either the efficacy in inducing the formation of neutralizing antibodies or the investigational products' safety profile. Exclusion of pregnant and lactating women from such studies still certainly inequitably deny these women access to COVID-19 vaccines since these products' availability became increasingly available to non-pregnant people and even during pregnancy in high-income settings. In this clinical opinion article, we discuss aspects of the prolonged pandemic, the emergence of viral variants, the risks of severe complications of COVID-19 in pregnant women, and the disproportionate impact on low- and middle-income countries.
