Reactions on a 1,2-Dicarbonyl Moiety of a Fullerene Skeleton.

Chemistry 2021 May 12;27(25):7235-7238. Epub 2021 Apr 12.

Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University, 611-0011, Uji, Kyoto, Japan.

A 1,2-dicarbonyl moiety on a cage-opened fullerene skeleton is one of suitable building blocks for the further derivatization. Herein, we discuss the chemical transformation of a 1,2-dicarbonyl compound into β-oxo-phosphorus ylide, acid anhydride, and α-methylene carbonyl derivatives. Despite possessing a sterically small methylene unit in the last one, the release of an encapsulated water molecule was significantly supressed whereas the β-oxo-phosphorus ylide bearing three bulky p-tolyl groups on the P-atom enabled the faster insertion/release dynamics, implying the flexibility of the phosphonium substituent. Preparation and Properties of Intrinsically Atomic-Oxygen Resistant Polyimide Films Containing Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS) in the Side Chains.

Polymers (Basel) 2020 Nov 30;12(12). Epub 2020 Nov 30.

Space Materials and Structure Protection Division, Beijing Institute of Spacecraft Environment Engineering, Beijing 100094, China.

The relatively poor atomic-oxygen (AO) resistance of the standard polyimide (PI) films greatly limits the wide applications in low earth orbit (LEO) environments. The introduction of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) units into the molecular structures of the PI films has been proven to be an effective procedure for enhancing the AO resistance of the PI films. In the current work, a series of POSS-substituted poly (pyromellitic anhydride-4,4'-oxydianiline) (PMDA-ODA) films (POSS-PI) with different POSS contents were synthesized via a POSS-containing diamine, -[(heptaisobutyl-POSS)propyl]-3,5-diaminobenzamide (DABA-POSS). Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Jan Dlugosz University in Czestochowa, Armii Krajowej Ave., 13/15, 42 201 Czestochowa, Poland.

Water soluble highly anionic β-cyclodextrin-based polymers were synthesized by reaction between cyclodextrin oxyanion and pyromellitic anhydride. The synthesis method utilizes activation hydroxyl groups in anhydrous glucopyranosyl units (AGU) in the DMF solution with the use of NaH. In these conditions, like in the case of the cyclodextrin reactions in the highly alkaline media, there is a nucleophilic substitution of difunctional compounds, which develops a polymer network with various cyclodextrin substitution. Department of Materials and Optoelectronic Science, Center of Crystal Research, National Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung 80424, Taiwan.

In this study we incorporated various amounts of a double-decker silsesquioxane (DDSQ) into phenolic/DDSQ hybrids, which we prepared from a bifunctionalized phenolic DDSQ derivative (DDSQ-4OH), phenol, and CHO under basic conditions (with DDSQ-4OH itself prepared through hydrosilylation of nadic anhydride with DDSQ and subsequent reaction with 4-aminophenol). We characterized these phenolic/DDSQ hybrids using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy; H, C, and Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy; X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); and thermogravimetric analysis. The thermal decomposition temperature and char yield both increased significantly upon increasing the DDSQ content, with the DDSQ units providing an inorganic protection layer on the phenolic surface, as confirmed through XPS analyses. Transforming colloidal CsPbBr nanocrystals with poly(maleic anhydride--1-octadecene) into stable CsPbBr perovskite emitters through intermediate heterostructures.

Chem Sci 2020 Apr 20;11(15):3986-3995. Epub 2020 Mar 20.

Nanochemistry Department, Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Via Morego 30, 16163 Genova, Italy.

The preparation of strongly emissive CsPbBr perovskite nanocrystals with robust surface passivation is a challenge in the field of lead halide perovskite nanomaterials. We report an approach to prepare polymer-capped CsPbBr perovskite nanocrystals by reacting oleylammonium/oleate-capped CsPbBr nanocrystals with poly(maleic anhydride--1-octadecene) (PMAO). PMAO contains succinic anhydride units that are reactive towards the oleylamine species present on the CsPbBr nanocrystals' surface and produces polysuccinamic acid, which, in turn, triggers the CsPbBr to CsPbBr conversion. Enantioselective terpolymerization of racemic and -epoxides with anhydrides for preparation of chiral polyesters.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 2020 07 24;117(27):15429-15436. Epub 2020 Jun 24.

State Key Laboratory of Fine Chemicals, Dalian University of Technology, 116024 Dalian, China

The preparation of stereochemistry- and sequence-defined polymers, in which different monomer units are arranged in an ordered fashion just like biopolymers, is of great interest and has been a long-standing goal for chemists due to the expectation of unique macroscopic properties. Here, we describe the enantioselective terpolymerization of racemic terminal epoxides, -epoxides, and anhydrides mediated by the privileged chiral dinuclear Al(III) catalyst system, to afford optically active polyester terpolymers with either gradient or random distribution as determined by the epoxides employed during their preparation. The enantioselective terpolymerization of racemic -butyl glycidyl ether (-TBGE) and cyclopentene oxide with phthalic anhydride (PA) or naphthyl anhydride (NA) gives novel gradient polyesters, in which the crystallization behavior varies continuously along the main chain, due to the decrement of one ester component and the increment of the other occurring sequentially from one chain end to the other. Surface-Functionalized Polystyrene Latexes Using Itaconate-Based Surfmers.

Langmuir 2018 10 19;34(39):11729-11737. Epub 2018 Sep 19.

Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry , Indian Institute of Science , Bangalore 560012 , India.

Itaconic acid was readily transformed to a series of amphiphilic diesters via stepwise esterification of itaconic anhydride; the diesters carry one alkyl (cetyl or octyl) group and either a PEG, glyceryl, or dopamine segment. These diesters were used as surfmers for the preparation of polystyrene (PS) emulsions, with the expectation that the surface of the emulsion particles would carry PEG, glyceryl or dopamine units. NMR spectroscopic studies revealed that the surfmers were covalently incorporated into the polystyrene chains; furthermore, NMR tube polymerization experiments also confirmed that when the PEG surfmer was used, the PEG segments are indeed present on the surface of the emulsion particles.
