Folding-controlled assembly of -phenylene-based macrocycles.

Chem Sci 2021 Apr 14;12(20):6992-7002. Epub 2021 Apr 14.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, Miami University Oxford OH 45056 USA

The self-assembly of foldamers into macrocycles is a simple approach to non-biological higher-order structure. Previous work on the co-assembly of -phenylene foldamers with rod-shaped linkers has shown that folding and self-assembly affect each other; that is, the combination leads to new emergent behavior, such as access to otherwise unfavorable folding states. To this point this relationship has been passive. Read More

J Food Biochem 2021 06 16;45(6):e13756. Epub 2021 May 16.

School of Food Science and Biotechnology, Zhejiang Gongshang University, Hangzhou, P.R. China.

Zn-binding protein was obtained after purification from scallops (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) using gel permeation and ion-exchange chromatography. Amino acid determination showed that the cysteine of the zinc-binding protein accounted for one-third of the total amino acids, which is a typical feature of metallothionein (MT). The spectra of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Circular Dichroism (CD) were analyzed to predict the secondary structure information of zinc-binding protein: the α-helix was 46. Biochemical Process Engineering, Division of Chemical Engineering, Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering, Luleå University of Technology, SE-971-87 Luleå, Sweden.

Organosolv pretreatment represents one of the most promising biomass valorization strategies for renewable carbon-based products; meanwhile, there is an overall lack of holistic approach to how extraction conditions affect the suitable end-usages. In this context, lignin extracted from silver birch ( L.) by a novel hybrid organosolv/steam-explosion treatment at varying process conditions (EtOH %; time; catalyst %) was analyzed by quantitative NMR (H-C HSQC; C NMR; P NMR), gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Pyr-gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC/MS), and thermogravimetric analysis, and the physicochemical characteristics of the lignins were discussed regarding their potential usages. Visualizing Degradation of Cellulose Nanofibers by Acid Hydrolysis.

Biomacromolecules 2021 04 1;22(4):1399-1405. Epub 2021 Feb 1.

Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems, School of Chemical Engineering, Aalto University, P.O Box 16300, Aalto 00076, Finland.

Cellulose hydrolysis is an extensively studied process due to its relevance in the fields of biofuels, chemicals production, and renewable nanomaterials. However, the direct visualization of the process accompanied with detailed scaling has not been reported because of the vast morphological alterations occurring in cellulosic fibers in typical heterogeneous (solid/liquid) hydrolytic systems. Here, we overcome this distraction by exposing hardwood cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) deposited on silica substrates to pressurized HCl gas in a solid/gas system and examine the changes in individual CNFs by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Combining humic acid with phosphate fertilizer affects humic acid structure and its stimulating efficacy on the growth and nutrient uptake of maize seedlings.

Sci Rep 2020 10 15;10(1):17502. Epub 2020 Oct 15.

Key Laboratory of Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs / Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing, 100081, China.

This paper analyzed the compositional and structural changes of humic acid (HA) after combined with phosphate fertilizer (PHA), and investigated its effects on the growth of maize seedlings with four humic acid concentrations. The results showed that the atomic ratios of O/C and (O + N)/N of PHA were significantly lower than those of HA, which indicated that PHA had poor hydrophilicity compared with HA. The spectra of FTIR and NMR results suggested that the relative content of carboxyl group in PHA was higher than that in HA. Read More
