Department of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, China. Center for Nutrition, Boston Children's Hospital, Boston, MA.

Objectives: Enteral nutrition delivery is limited by intolerance and interruptions in critically ill children. Anticholinergic properties of frequently administered medications may contribute to altered gastric motility and enteral nutrition intolerance in this population. We examined the association between the anticholinergic burden of administered medications using the Anticholinergic Drug Scale and adequacy of enteral nutrition delivery. Read More

Pitfalls in international benchmarking of energy intensity across wastewater treatment utilities.

J Environ Manage 2021 Sep 21;300:113613. Epub 2021 Sep 21.

School of Engineering, University of Limerick, Limerick, Ireland.

The collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater is estimated to consume more than 2% of the world's electrical energy, whilst some wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can account for over 20% of electrical consumption within municipalities. To investigate areas to improve wastewater treatment, international benchmarking on energy (electrical) intensity was conducted with the indicator kWh/m and a quality control of secondary treatment or better for ≥95% of treated volume. The core sample included 321 companies from 31 countries, however, to analyse regional differences, 11 countries from an external sample made up of various studies of WWTPs was also used in places. The present work has been oriented to the qualitative and quantitative assessments of the aftermath effects of 2014 flood tragedy on the organic, inorganic and microbial contaminants in the floodwater, with a particular emphasis on their relative health risks and microbial infectious hazards to the flood-affected population, using average daily dose, hazard quotient, hazard index (HI), cancer risk (CR) and quantitative microbial risk assessment. Statistical comparison of the organic and inorganic contents was performed using the paired t-tests, while the predominant socio-demographic profiles and health attributes of the respondents to flood-induced health risks (HI) were verified by the chi-square test and binary logistic regression analysis. Among all, Fe, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cr, Cd, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, estriol, 17α-ethinylestradiol, estrone, β-estradiol and bisphenol A were detected at the study area after flooding. Institute of Human Genetics, Diagnostic and Research Center for Molecular BioMedicine, Medical University of Graz, Graz, Austria. Electronic address:

Detection of EGFR mutations from circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) from blood plasma represents a gentle, non-invasive alternative to rebiopsy and can therefore be used for therapy monitoring of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The aim of this project was to investigate whether the Reveal ctDNA™ 28 NGS assay (ArcherDX, Boulder, CO), has a comparable sensitivity and specificity to droplet digital PCR (ddPCR, gold-standard) and is therefore suitable for therapy monitoring of progressing lung cancer patients. First, we validated the NGS assay with commercially available reference material (SeraCare, Massachusetts, US). Read More

Development of a novel ALK rearrangement screening test for non-small cell lung cancers.

PLoS One 2021 24;16(9):e0257152. Epub 2021 Sep 24.

Molecular Diagnosis Laboratory, Department of Pathology, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Tainan, Taiwan.

Approximately 5-7% of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cases harbor an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion gene and may benefit from ALK inhibitor therapy. To detect ALK fusion genes, we developed a novel test using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for the ALK kinase domain (KD). Since ALK expression is mostly silenced in the adult with the exception of neuronal tissue, the normal lung tissue, mesothelial lining, and inflammatory cells are devoid of ALK transcript, making ALK KD RT-PCR an ideal surrogate test for ALK fusion transcripts in lung or pleural effusion.
