Influence of Alkali Treatment on Properties of Bamboo Portland Cement Particle Board.

ACS Omega 2022 May 29;7(18):16043-16048. Epub 2022 Apr 29.

College of Materials Science and Engineering, Central South University of Forestry and Technology, Changsha 410004, PR China.

Bamboo contains water-soluble saccharides and carboxylic acid which have an anticoagulation effect on Portland cement; the anticoagulation ingredients can directly influence the adaptability of the Portland cement and bamboo shavings and finally influence the mechanical properties of bamboo Portland cement particle board. In order to improve the adaptability of bamboo and the Portland cement, bamboo shavings are pretreated with 1% NaOH solution, 2% NaOH solution, or 3% NaOH solution. High-performance liquid chromatography is adopted to analyze the influences of treatment based on different concentrations of NaOH solutions on the content of water-soluble saccharides and carboxylic acid in the bamboo shavings, and a Fourier infrared spectrometer and an X-ray diffractometer are utilized to analyze the characteristic peak changes and crystallization property changes, respectively, of the chemical ingredients of the bamboo shavings before and after the three types of pretreatment. Impact of Chitosan on the Mechanical Stability of Soils.

Molecules 2022 Mar 31;27(7). Epub 2022 Mar 31.

Department of Physical Chemistry of Porous Materials, Institute of Agrophysics of Polish Academy of Sciences, Doswiadczalna 4 Str., 20-290 Lublin, Poland.

Chitosan is becoming increasingly applied in agriculture, mostly as a powder, however little is known about its effect on soil mechanical properties. Uniaxial compression test was performed for cylindrical soil aggregates prepared from four soils of various properties (very acidic Podzol, acidic Arenosol, neutral Fluvisol and alkaline Umbrisol) containing different proportions of two kinds of chitosan (CS1 of higher molecular mass and lower deacetylation degree, and CS2 of lower molecular mass and higher deacetylation degree), pretreated with 1 and 10 wetting-drying cycles. In most cases increasing chitosan rates successively decreased the mechanical stability of soils that was accompanied by a tendential increase in soil porosity. Read More

A New Method to Overcome Carboxyamide Formation During AFEX Pretreatment of Lignocellulosic Biomass.

Front Chem 2021 21;9:826625. Epub 2022 Jan 21.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Material Science, Michigan State University, Lansing, MI, United States.

Lignin-carbohydrate complexes (LCCs) in the plant cell wall are responsible for providing resistance against biomass-degrading enzymes produced by microorganisms. Four major types of lignin-carbohydrate bonds are reported in the literature, namely, benzyl ethers, benzyl esters, phenyl glycosides, and acetyl ester linkages. Ester's linkages in the plant cell wall are labile to alkaline pretreatments, such as ammonia fiber expansion (AFEX), which uses liquid or gaseous ammonia to cleave those linkages in the plant cell wall and reduce biomass recalcitrance.
