Protective roles of the TIR/BB-loop mimetic AS-1 in alkali-induced corneal neovascularization by inhibiting ERK phosphorylation.

Exp Eye Res 2021 Apr 8:108568. Epub 2021 Apr 8.

Center of Clinical Research, The Affiliated Wuxi People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, 299 Qingyang Road, Wuxi, Jiangsu, 214023, People's Republic of China.

Hydrocinnamoyl-L-valylpyrrolidine (AS-1), a synthetic low-molecule mimetic of myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), inhibits inflammation by disrupting the interaction between the interleukin-1 receptor (IL-1R) and MyD88. Here, we describe the effects of AS-1 on injury-induced increases in inflammation and neovascularization in mouse corneas. Mice were administered a subconjunctival injection of 8 μL AS-1 diluent before or after corneal alkali burn, followed by evaluation of corneal resurfacing and corneal neovascularization (CNV) by slit-lamp biomicroscopy and clinical assessment. Long-term Impact of Gold and Platinum on Microbial Diversity in Australian Soils.

Microb Ecol 2021 Jan 6. Epub 2021 Jan 6.

School of Science, RMIT University, PO Box 71, Bundoora, Victoria, 3083, Australia.

The effects of platinum (Pt) and gold (Au) and on the soil bacterial community was evaluated in four different Australian soil types (acidic Burn Grounds (BGR), organic matter-rich Fox Lane, high silt/metal Pinpinio (PPN), and alkali Minnipa (MNP) spiked with either Pt or Au at 1, 25, and 100 mg kg using a next-generation sequencing approach (amplicon-based, MiSeq). Soil type and metal concentrations were observed to be key drivers of Pt and Au effects on soil microbial community structure. Different trends were therefore observed in the response of the bacterial community to Pt and Au amendments; however in each soil type, Pt and Au amendment caused a detectable shift in community structure that in most samples was positively correlated with increasing metal concentrations. Rapamycin ameliorates corneal injury after alkali burn through methylation modification in mouse TSC1 and mTOR genes.

Exp Eye Res 2021 02 23;203:108399. Epub 2020 Dec 23.

School of Life Sciences, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou, 730000, China. Electronic address:

Alkali burn to the cornea is one of the most intractable injuries to the eye due to the opacity resulting from neovascularization (NV) and fibrosis. Numerous studies have focused on studying the effect of drugs on alkali-induced corneal injury in mouse, but fewer on the involvement of alkali-induced DNA methylation and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in the mechanism of alkali-induced corneal injury. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the involvement of DNA methyltransferase 3 B-madiated DNA methylation and PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling modulation in the mechanism of alkali-induced corneal injury in a mouse model. Heparin-Modified Amniotic Membrane Combined With Growth Factors for Promoting Corneal Wound Healing After Alkali Burn.

Front Bioeng Biotechnol 2020 23;8:599800. Epub 2020 Nov 23.

State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China.

Ocular chemical burns are potentially blinding ocular injuries and require urgent management. Amniotic membrane (AM) transplantation is an effective surgical treatment, one of the reasons is because AM is a rich source of growth factors that can promote epithelialization and wound healing. However, growth factors will be gradually lost and insufficient after preparation process and long-time storage, leading to unsatisfactory therapeutic effects. Read More

ACS Omega 2020 Nov 12;5(46):29978-29987. Epub 2020 Nov 12.

Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute Co., Ltd, Xi'an 710054, China.

In order to optimize the parameters of boilers and realize the burning of pure, high-alkali coal, the velocity field, temperature field, and component distribution characteristics of a new cyclone boiler with slag-tap furnace were numerically studied using ANSYS software. The influence law of the over-fire air rate on the NO emission of the cyclone boiler with slag-tap furnace was established, and the optimal over-fire air rate was determined. The renormalization-group -ε double equation model was used to simulate the gas phase flow, the discrete phase model was used to compute the gas-solid two-phase flow, and the high-alkali coal combustion model was revised based on experimental data. Acetylsalicylic Acid Promotes Corneal Epithelium Migration by Regulating Neutrophil Extracellular Traps in Alkali Burn.

Front Immunol 2020 15;11:551057. Epub 2020 Oct 15.

Eye Center, Second Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.

Neutrophils are the first cells to migrate into the cornea in response to alkali burns, and excessive neutrophil infiltration is associated with inflammatory injury and a poorer prognosis. In an effort to understand the mechanisms underlying the inflammation mediated by neutrophils after alkali burns, we examined the role of alkali-activated neutrophils on human corneal epithelial cells (HCEs) proliferation and migration, as well as the effects of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) and dexamethasone (DXM) on NETosis. We stimulated human neutrophils with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and observed dose- and time-dependent neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) formation. Read More

Wound Healing After Alkali Burn Injury of the Cornea Involves Nox4-Type NADPH Oxidase.

Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2020 Oct;61(12):20

Centre for Eye Research Australia, University of Melbourne, East Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Purpose: Corneal injury that occurs after burning with alkali initiates wound-healing processes, including inflammation, neovascularization, and fibrosis. Excessive reactions to injury can reduce corneal transparency and thereby compromise vision. The NADPH oxidase (Nox) enzyme complex is known to be involved in cell signaling for wound-healing angiogenesis, but its role in corneal neovascularization has been little studied. Read More
