Nevus Lipomatosus Cutaneous Superficialis Associated with Trichofolliculoma: An Uncommon Duet of Rare Pathologies.

Int J Trichology 2020 May-Jun;12(3):132-134. Epub 2020 Aug 14.

Department of Surgery, Nazareth Hospital, Shillong, Meghalaya, India.

Nevus lipomatosus cutaneous superficialis (NLCS) and trichofolliculoma (TF) are both rare cutaneous hamartomatous lesions. However, the coexistence of NLCS and TF as a single lesion has been reported only in two other cases, that too in middle-aged individuals. We report the first case of NLCS associated with TF in pediatric age group and also, to the best of our knowledge, the first case reported from India. Read More

Hair Follicle Nevus Located on the Neck: Comparison with Accessory Tragus, Cervical Chondrocutaneous Branchial Remnants and Trichofolliculoma.

Ann Dermatol 2019 Dec 31;31(6):662-665. Epub 2019 Oct 31.

Department of Dermatology, SMG-SNU Boramae Medical Center, Seoul, Korea.

Hair follicle nevus (HFN) is a rare, benign, follicular hamartoma that most frequently presents as a congenital nodule on the face. We experienced a rare case of HFN on the neck of a 14-year-old boy and performed a pilot immunohistochemical study with cytokeratin 19 (CK19) to compare the staining pattern of hair follicles in HFN and its differential diagnoses, accessory tragus, cervical chondrocutaneous branchial remnants (CCBR) and trichofolliculoma. With hematoxylin and eosin stain, HFN showed numerous tiny hair follicles in the dermis with several sebaceous and eccrine glands, and perifollicular fibrous thickening. Read More

Expression of Connexin 43 (Cx43) in Benign Cutaneous Tumors With Follicular Differentiation.

Am J Dermatopathol 2019 Nov;41(11):810-818

CellCOM-SB Research Group Department, Institute for Biomedical Research of A Coruña (INIBIC), University of A Coruña (UDC), A Coruña, Spain.

Introduction: Benign cutaneous tumors with follicular differentiation are alleged to differentiate toward parts of the hair follicle. Connexin 43 (Cx43) is a gap junction protein, the tumoral role of which has been investigated in several types of tumors.

Objective: To study the pattern of expression of Cx43 in benign cutaneous tumors with follicular differentiation and to compare it with that shown by their alleged anatomical counterparts of the hair follicle. Read More

Differential diagnostic significance of epithelial and stromal CD10 expression in tumors of trichogenic origin.

J Dtsch Dermatol Ges 2018 Jun;16(6):719-728

Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology, University Medical Center, Würzburg, Germany.

Background And Objectives: The histological differential diagnosis between benign trichogenic skin tumors and basal cell carcinoma may be challenging. We therefore set out to investigate whether expression of CD10, a cell surface protein with neutral endopeptidase activity, might be a suitable marker for the histological differential diagnosis of trichogenic skin tumors.

Patients And Methods: We immunohistochemically analyzed 119 cases of benign trichogenic skin tumors and basal cell carcinoma. Read More

Chronological changes in trichofolliculoma: Folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma is not a very-late-stage trichofolliculoma.

J Dermatol 2017 Sep 31;44(9):1050-1054. Epub 2017 Mar 31.

Division of Dermatology, Nakao Clinic, Saga, Japan.

Some authors have reported that the secondary hair follicles in trichofolliculomas (TF) undergo regressive changes and are subsequently replaced by the developed sebaceous elements, and that folliculosebaceous cystic hamartoma (FSCH) is a TF at a very late stage. In the present study, we revaluated the histopathological features of 40 TF lesions, focusing on their chronological changes. The results of the present study indicate that while the secondary follicles in the TF exhibited the hair cycle, the normal hair cycle was out of control, and tertiary hair follicles randomly developed from the involuting secondary follicles. Genital folliculo-sebaceous cystic hamartoma: A claim of the stroma as a clue in the diagnosis of proliferations with follicular differentiation.

J Cutan Pathol 2017 May 8;44(5):504-508. Epub 2017 Mar 8.

Department of Dermatology, Fundación Jiménez Diaz, Universidad Autónoma, Madrid, Spain.

Folliculo-sebaceous hamartomas comprise a series of entities whose boundaries are imprecise. We present the clinical case of a folliculo-sebaceous cystic hamartoma of genital localization where the diagnosis was established based on the epithelial proliferation, but mostly, on the characteristic stroma. Because this lesion lacked of the cystic component, we mention the most frequent differential diagnoses and review the literature of the few cases published on this infrequent localization. Hair Follicle Nevus Located on the Chin of an Infant: Case Report and Review of Literature.

Pediatr Dermatol 2016 Mar-Apr;33(2):e106-8

Department of Dermatology, School of Medicine, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Hair follicle nevi are rare, benign, congenital hamartomas that usually occur in the distribution of the first brachial arch. Histopathologically, the distinction between hair follicle nevus, trichofolliculoma, and accessory tragus has recently come into question, and it may be that they are all on a spectrum of the same condition. We report the case of a 7-day-old boy who presented with a "tag"-like lesion on his midline chin that had been present since birth. Read More

Benign follicular tumors.

An Bras Dermatol 2015 Nov-Dec;90(6):780-96; quiz 797-8

Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.

Benign follicular tumors comprise a large and heterogeneous group of neoplasms that share a common histogenesis and display morphological features resembling one or several portions of the normal hair follicle, or recapitulate part of its embryological development. Most cases present it as clinically nondescript single lesions and essentially of dermatological relevance. Occasionally, however, these lesions be multiple and represent a cutaneous marker of complex syndromes associated with an increased risk of visceral neoplasms. Read More
