A Literature Review and Two Case Reports: Is Traumatic Dislocation of the Testes a Surgical Emergency?

Cureus 2022 May 2;14(5):e24672. Epub 2022 May 2.

Department of Urology, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, QAT.

Traumatic dislocation of the testes (TDT) is a rare sequela of blunt scrotal and perineal trauma. TDT can easily be overlooked during concomitant trauma due to other injuries, The damage to the testis appears to be not severe in dislocation and may be corrected by repositioning even if it is delayed. However, delayed intervention might be associated with pain and discomfort and may lead to abnormal sperm parameters and possible infertility. Read More

Lactic acid bacteria alleviate di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-induced liver and testis toxicity via their bio-binding capacity, antioxidant capacity and regulation of the gut microbiota.

Environ Pollut 2022 Jul 1;305:119197. Epub 2022 Apr 1.

State Key Laboratory of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, 214122, PR China; School of Food Science and Technology, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, 214122, PR China; National Engineering Research Center for Functional Food, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, 214122, PR China.

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a plasticiser that, if absorbed into the human body, can cause various adverse effects including reproductive toxicity, liver toxicity and gut microbiota dysbiosis. So far, some studies have proved that the toxicity of DEHP can be reduced by using antioxidants. However, these candidates all show potential side effects and cannot prevent the accumulation of DEHP in the body, making them unable to be used as a daily dietary supplement to relieve the toxic effects of DEHP. The Role of Seminal Oxidative Stress Scavenging System in the Pathogenesis of Sperm DNA Damage in Men Exposed and Not Exposed to Genital Heat Stress.

Int J Environ Res Public Health 2022 02 25;19(5). Epub 2022 Feb 25.

Institute of Human Genetics, Polish Academy of Sciences, 60-479 Poznan, Poland.

Responding to the need for the verification of some experimental animal studies showing the involvement of oxidative stress in germ cell damage in the heat-induced testis, we investigated the possibility of a direct relationship between seminal oxidative stress markers (total antioxidant capacity, catalase activity, superoxide dismutase activity, and malondialdehyde concentration) and ejaculated sperm chromatin/DNA integrity (DNA fragmentation and chromatin condensation abnormalities) in distinct groups of men exposed and not exposed to prolonged scrotal hyperthermia. A statistical increase in the proportion of sperm with DNA fragmentation was observed in all the studied subgroups compared to the fertile men. In turn, the groups subjected to heat stress as professional drivers or infertile men with varicocele presented greater disturbances in the oxidative stress scavenging system than men not exposed to genital heat stress. Connolly Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin, Ireland, D15 X40D.

Testicular germ cell regression is a rare, generally metastatic phenomenon which describes the spontaneous, complete, or partial regression of a testicular germ cell tumour. As a result, studies have focused on defining specific histopathological criteria to establish if the resected testis is the primary source of the germ cell tumour. There are few publications which describe its presentation in the absence of distant metastases with elevated tumour markers and suspicious findings on testicular ultrasound. Read More

Alternative splicing and MicroRNA: epigenetic mystique in male reproduction.

RNA Biol 2022 31;19(1):162-175. Epub 2021 Dec 31.

Institute of Reproductive Medicine, School of Medicine, Nantong University, Nantong, China.

Infertility is rarely life threatening, however, it poses a serious global health issue posing far-reaching socio-economic impacts affecting 12-15% of couples worldwide where male factor accounts for 70%. Functional spermatogenesis which is the result of several concerted coordinated events to produce sperms is at the core of male fertility, Alternative splicing and microRNA (miRNA) mediated RNA silencing (RNAi) constitute two conserved post-transcriptional gene (re)programming machinery across species. The former by diversifying transcriptome signature and the latter by repressing target mRNA activity orchestrate a spectrum of testicular events, and their dysfunctions has several implications in male infertility.
