Sigmoid volvulus after trauma, an uncommon twist.

Am J Emerg Med 2022 02 20;52:269.e3-269.e5. Epub 2021 Aug 20.

Department of Emergency Medicine, San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, 3551 Roger Brooke Dr, Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234, United States.

Non-invasive treatment of the sigmoid volvulus. A pediatric case report.

Radiol Case Rep 2021 Sep 2;16(9):2429-2433. Epub 2021 Jul 2.

Department of Biomedical and Dental Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging, Division of Radiology, AOU Policlinico Universitario G. Martino, University of Messina, Via consolare Valeria 1, 98125, Messina, Italy.

Sigmoid volvulus occurs when the sigmoid colic loop gets wrapped around its own mesocolon. While this condition is categorized as an extremely rare emergency in the pediatric population, diagnosis is often difficult due to the fact that its aspecific manifestations or sneaky symptoms are similar to other medical conditions. The available treatment options remain controversial up to this day, and the non-operative approach is more preferred in treating hemodynamic stable patients. Read More

Aparato Digestivo, Hospital Royo Villanova, España.

We report the case of a 96-year-old institutionalized male, with severe dementia, who was admitted to our hospital with sigmoid volvulus. After successful decompression, the patient developed recurrent sigmoid volvulus twice within 76 hours, which required endoscopic repositioning. However, after a new recurrence and rejecting surgery, we chose percutaneous endoscopic colostomy, using the standard gastrostomy technique, in order to fix the mobile intestine to the abdominal wall to prevent torsion.
