[The role of the family doctor in the palliative care of chronic and terminally ill patients].

Semergen 2019 Feb 1. Epub 2019 Feb 1.

Medicina Familiar y Comunitaria de la Universidad de la Sabana, Grupo Kheiron Bioética Unisabana, Chía, Colombia.

The objective of this work was to identify the role of family physicians in the care of patients and their families in the approach to the end of life. Nowadays, with the increase in the demand for care of patients with terminal illnesses, there is also evidence on the lack of physicians with the profile and skills to fulfil this coverage deficit. A review of the literature was carried out in five databases from January 2015 to May 2018, and concluded that family doctors, based on their professional skills, ability to engage with the patients, their families, and their performance in the coordination of medical resources, are in an ideal position to attend and solve complex problems of patients at the end of life. [Cancer: Communicating the diagnosis and prognosis].

Authors:
D M Campagne

Semergen 2019 Jan 9. Epub 2019 Jan 9.

Departamento de Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamientos Psicológicos, Facultad de Psicología, Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, Madrid, España. Electronic address:

The diagnoses and prognoses that medical professionals have to communicate in cases of cancer come with special problems. Of all fatal diseases, cancer possibly causes most psychological impact on the patient. Although, by nature, medical professionals are aware of this negative impact and take care to be as prudent and human as possible, recent studies have shown that the "psychological factors of the patient" are of direct relevance to the medical factors in cancer, over and above their importance on quality of life during the course of the disease. [Prevention and treatment of infectious diseases in diabetic patients].

Semergen 2018 Dec 20. Epub 2018 Dec 20.

Grupo de Trabajo Diabetes de SEMERGEN, España; Unidad de Gestión Clínica Puerta Blanca, Málaga, España.

The bidirectional relationship between infectious diseases and diabetes is well-known. On the one hand, diabetes patients are at a higher risk of presenting with infectious diseases, possibly with more severity, and on the other hand, infectious diseases impair metabolic control in patients with diabetes. Population ageing arises partly due to an increased survival rate in chronic diseases, of which diabetes is amongst them. Read More
