Early diagnosis of necrotizing enterocolitis by plasma RELMβ and thrombocytopenia in preterm infants: A pilot study.

Pediatr Neonatol 2019 Jan 22. Epub 2019 Jan 22.

Department of Neonatology, China Medical University Children's Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan; School of Chinese Medicine, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan; Asia University Hospital, Asia University, Taichung, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: As the inflammatory regulators, Resistin-like molecule β (RELMβ) and Resistin might be potential biomarkers of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), while thrombocytopenia is often related to the severity of NEC, clinical observation suggests that thrombocytopenia might be an early biomarker of NEC. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether RELMβ, Resistin and thrombocytopenia could be biomarkers for early diagnosis of NEC in preterm infants.

Methods: From January 2016 to March 2018, twenty-nine NEC preterm infants who were diagnosed with NEC (Bell's stage ≥Ⅱ) by two independent neonatologists and twenty-nine non NEC preterm infants at neonatal intensive care unit in our hospital were enrolled in this case-control study. Read More

Cesarean section predominantly affects right ventricular diastolic function during the early transitional period.

Pediatr Neonatol 2019 Jan 19. Epub 2019 Jan 19.

Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Fukui, Fukui, Japan. Electronic address:

Background: Although the mode of delivery is well known to affect pulmonary function, the effects of a cesarean delivery on postnatal changes in cardiac mechanics have not been clearly defined.

Methods: To evaluate whether delivery mode influences cardiac function in the early transitional period, 42 infants delivered by cesarean section (CS) and 110 by vaginal delivery (VD) were enrolled, and they underwent serial echocardiography at 0, 1, 2, and 5 days of age. Longitudinal changes in ejection fraction (EF), fractional area change (FAC), mitral annular plane systolic excursion (MAPSE), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), Tei index, ratio of peak early diastolic flow velocity (E) to peak early diastolic annular velocity (e') (E/e'), and deceleration time (DcT) were compared between the two groups. DNA methylation of the Rtl1 promoter in the placentas with fetal growth restriction.

Pediatr Neonatol 2019 Jan 5. Epub 2019 Jan 5.

Department of Pediatrics, Kobe University Graduate School of Medicine, Kobe, Japan.

Background: Small for gestational age (SGA) babies experience fetal growth restriction because of placental insufficiency, and aberrant fetal growth has been linked to DNA methylation in the placenta. An imprinted gene encoding retrotransposon-like protein 1 (RTL1) is regulated by DNA methylation in the promoter region and plays a key role in placental development. We therefore investigated the DNA methylation status of RTL1 in the placenta of infants with severe SGA. Read More

Heparin-binding epidermal growth factor-like growth factor (HB-EGF) protected intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury through JNK and p38/MAPK-dependent pathway for anti-apoptosis.

Pediatr Neonatol 2018 Aug 17. Epub 2018 Aug 17.

Division of Pediatric Surgery, Department of Surgery, Wan Fang Hospital, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan; Department of Surgery, School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Taipei Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Background: Heparin-Binding Epidermal Growth Factor-Like Growth Factor (HB-EGF) is a potent cytoprotective factor in various body systems, including gastrointestinal tract. In this study, we intended to examine whether HB-EGF exerts its protective effects through MAPK dependent anti-apoptosis after intestinal I/R injury.

Methods: We randomly divided 30 laboratory 30 rats into 5 groups: (A) normal control group, (B) ischemia group with normal saline, (C) I/R group with normal saline, (D) ischemia group with HB-EGF (400 ug/kg), and (E) I/R group with HB-EGF (400 ug/kg). Read More
