Introduction: The incidence of the malignant tumors of the salivary glands is relatelively low. However, rapid locoregional progression, distant metastases occurrence and high local recurrence rate occurring despite radical surgical treatment, significantly affect the outcome. Malignant tumors of the salivary glands are characterized by low radiosensitivity and poor response to systemic therapy. Read More

Concentration of sex hormones has been estimated applying radioimmunological methods, and of SHBG with filtration method using DEAE cellulose filters. It has been found that chemotherapy of breast cancer of premenopausal women results in decrease of concentration of estradiol, testosterone, prolactin and SHGB down to the values approaching postcastration values and the application of cytostatics and of tamoxifen in postmenopausal women is not resulting in the decrease of concentration of these hormones and SHGB to the degree justifying a routine application of these drugs simultaneously. Surgery remains the only curative treatment, however the resectability is low: solely 10-20% of patients are candidates for operation and 30% of radical operated survive 5 years. Ligation of hepatic artery, systemic, intraarterial and intraportal chemotherapy have palliative value. Cell proliferation kinetics of tumours in relation to cancer therapy.

Authors:
J Denekamp

Nowotwory 1989 Jul-Dec;39(3-4):145-51

Cell proliferation kinetic differences exist between tumours and their normal tissue of origin, or the normal tissue within which they grow. These differences may help or hinder the therapist in his efforts to eradicate the tumour without excessive harm to the patient. Some aspects of the influence of cell kinetic parameters on therapeutic response and of the therapy on cell kinetic balances are outlined, both for radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Read More

[Influence of brachytherapy on the behavior of immunologic circulating complexes in the blood serum of patients with cervix cancer].

Nowotwory 1989 Jul-Dec;39(3-4):171-5

Applying the EA and EAC rosettes production inhibition method the appearance and levels of immunologic circulating complexes (CI) in the blood serum of 32 patients with cancer of the uterine cervix and in 100 healthy persons have been evaluated. Immunocomplexes have been examined prior to the initiation of brachytherapy and after three successive applications of radioactive cesium isotope (137Cs). Three successive application of the radioisotope contained and in the uterine probe have been used and a dose up to 2000 cGy in 16-18 hours given on each application. Read More
