Review of Published Bitter Orange Extract and p-Synephrine Adverse Event Clinical Study Case Reports.

J Diet Suppl 2019 Mar 5:1-9. Epub 2019 Mar 5.

b Manchester University College of Pharmacy , Ft. Worth , IN , USA.

p-Synephrine is the primary active ingredient in bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) extract and is present in other citrus species. This review summarizes all known case reports that have been published regarding adverse events associated with multi-ingredient dietary supplements containing bitter orange extract. A common characteristic of all the case studies was the assumption that if bitter orange extract is listed on the label of the product it is the most likely cause of any adverse effect, although in no case was the presence of p-synephrine determined or a direct link demonstrated. Influence of Βeta-Cryptoxanthin Supplementation on Ovarian Reserve and Fertility Status in Aged Wistar Rats.

J Diet Suppl 2018 Dec 8:1-13. Epub 2018 Dec 8.

a School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, Division of Health Sciences , University of South Australia , Adelaide , Australia.

Previous observational studies have suggested that β-cryptoxanthin, a micronutrient present in yellow and orange fruit and vegetables, may help delay the onset of menopause. Given the widespread social trend of delaying pregnancy, the possibility that β-cryptoxanthin supplementation may delay age-related loss of fertility and onset of menopause is of significant interest. In a parallel study, either saline or β-cryptoxanthin (5 µg/kg rat/day) was delivered to Wistar albino rats via an osmotic pump from 4 to 7 months of age. Read More

Effects of Glutamine and Alanine Supplementation on Adiposity, Plasma Lipid Profile, and Adipokines of Rats Submitted to Resistance Training.

J Diet Suppl 2018 Jul 9:1-13. Epub 2018 Jul 9.

a Department of Food and Experimental Nutrition, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences , University of São Paulo , São Paulo , SP , Brazil.

Glutamine and alanine are lipogenic and could prevent the effects of resistance training (RT) in reducing adiposity and modulating lipid profile. Thus, we aimed to investigate the effects of RT and glutamine and alanine supplementation, in their free or conjugated form, on relative epididymal adipose tissue (EAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) weight, plasma lipid profile, and adipokines in EAT. Thirty Wistar rats, aged two months, were distributed into five groups: control (CTRL), trained (TRN), trained and supplemented with alanine (ALA), glutamine and alanine in their free form (GLN+ALA), or L-alanyl-L-glutamine (DIP). a Drosophila Transgenic Laboratory, Section of Genetics, Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life Sciences , Aligarh Muslim University , Aligarh , Uttar Pradesh , India.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second-most common neurodegenerative disorder and is characterized by the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Oxidative stress has also been linked with the progression of PD, hence the involvement of a natural plant product could offer neuroprotection. The present study deals with the effect of genistein on the transgenic flies expressing normal human alpha synuclein panneurally. Read More

Role of Mushroom as Dietary Supplement on Performance of Poultry.

J Diet Suppl 2018 Jul 3:1-14. Epub 2018 Jul 3.

b Department of Poultry Science, Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences , Pir Mehr Ali Shah, Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi , Rawalpindi , Pakistan.

The objective of this review is to summarize the effect of commonly used mushrooms (particularly Pleurotus ostreatus or oyster mushroom, Agaricus bisporus or Button mushroom, Lentimula edodes or shiitake mushroom, and Ganoderma lucidum or reishi mushroom) in poultry diets on performance of broilers and layers. It can be concluded from different studies that mushrooms and their polysaccharides can play important roles in poultry production: (1) Polysaccharides in mushrooms may act as immune enhancers or immunomodulators and show antibacterial, antiviral, antiparasitic bioactivities; (2) phenolic compounds of mushrooms may act as antioxidants; (3) mushrooms in broiler's diet may be used as growth promoters as an alternative to antibiotics; (4) mushrooms in the diet may improve egg production and quality; (5) mushrooms may be used as a safe and effective alternative for inducing molt, enhancing immunity, reducing Salmonella growth, and returning to egg production. Further studies are needed to investigate the effects of mushrooms to improve productive performance in chickens and to illuminate the possible modes of action related to the gut ecosystem and the immune response. The Effects of Curcumin on Serum Heat Shock Protein 27 Antibody Titers in Patients with Metabolic Syndrome.

J Diet Suppl 2018 Jun 29:1-10. Epub 2018 Jun 29.

h Neurogenic Inflammation Research Center , Mashhad University of Medical Sciences , Mashhad , Iran.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. Inflammation and oxidant stress are features of MetS that can enhance the expression and release of heat shock proteins (Hsps), including the small heat shock protein, Hsp 27, and that may subsequently lead to the production of Hsp27 antibodies (anti-Hsp 27). Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant phytochemical that may ameliorate these features of MetS. Read More

Putative Effect of Spirulina Extract on Enzyme Activities Participating in Lipid and Carbohydrate Digestion Processes.

J Diet Suppl 2018 Jun 29:1-9. Epub 2018 Jun 29.

a Life Science Research Group , Shikoku University School of Health Sciences , Tokushima , Japan.

Excessive calorie intake is generally accepted as a primary cause of metabolic syndrome, and therefore a well-balanced diet and moderate exercise can be expected to be the most effective measures to avoid the disorder of energy utilization and storage. Furthermore, as any other way to improve the disorder of energy balance, it may be effective to delay and lower the digestion and/or absorption of energy sources, lipids, and carbohydrates. As a primary screening of effective substances to delay and lower the digestion and absorption processes among natural materials, the protein-deprived extract was prepared from blue-green algae Spirulina platensis, and the effect of this extract on lipase and α-glucosidase activities was examined.
