[Competition in the arts of midwifery in the city of Rio de Janeiro from 1835 to 1900].

Hist Cienc Saude Manguinhos 2018 May 10. Epub 2018 May 10.

Departamento de Medicina Preventiva, FM, UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil,

The article discusses competition between midwives and doctors offering birth-related services in the city of Rio de Janeiro from 1835 to 1900. The research analyzed minutes from meetings, textbooks on births, and terms from qualification examinations for physicians, surgeons, apothecaries, and midwives at the Rio de Janeiro Medical School (Faculdade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro), as well as announcements by and advertisements for doctors and midwives in columns featuring advertisements and useful recommendations in the Jornal do Commercio newspaper. An increase in the number of delivery physicians, and their scientific discourses led midwives to feel an obligation to diversify their clientele, consequently establishing themselves and working in lower-class and inhospitable areas. Horticulture in Portugal 1850-1900: The role of science and public utility in shaping knowledge.

Ann Sci 2017 Jul 7;74(3):192-213. Epub 2017 Aug 7.

a Centro Interuniversitário de História das Ciências e Tecnologia, Faculdade de Ciências , Universidade de Lisboa , Lisboa , Portugal.

In this paper, we address the emergence of horticultural practice, agents, spaces and institutions in the two urban settings of Lisbon and Porto, in Portugal, during the second half of the nineteenth century. We do so by following the networking activities of two players: the self-made horticulturist and entrepreneur José Marques Loureiro, who created, in Porto, a commercial horticultural establishment and founded the Journal of Practical Horticulture; and the agronomist Francisco Simões Margiochi, head of the gardens and green grounds department of the municipality, who created the first course on gardening and horticulture, and founded the Royal Horticultural Society, both in Lisbon. Their joint activities were aimed at establishing horticulture as an applied science and to cater simultaneously to an extended audience of citizens. Read More

Protein-species quantitative venomics: looking through a crystal ball.

J Venom Anim Toxins Incl Trop Dis 2017 28;23:27. Epub 2017 Apr 28.

Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry, University of Oviedo, Oviedo, Spain.

In this paper we discuss recent significant developments in the field of venom research, specifically the emergence of top-down proteomic applications that allow achieving compositional resolution at the level of the protein species present in the venom, and the absolute quantification of the venom proteins (the term "protein species" is used here to refer to all the different molecular forms in which a protein can be found. Please consult the special issue of "Towards deciphering proteomes via the proteoform, protein speciation, moonlighting and protein code concepts" published in 2016, vol. 134, pages 1-202). The aim of this paper was to understand how the media in the state of Pernambuco portrays dengue fever, a disease that is affecting more and more Brazilians. Taking the explosive epidemic of 2002 as the starting point, we tried to understand the effects of meaning produced by the press in a comparative discourse strategy analysis used in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. We selected 291 articles and notes published in the Jornal do Commercio (Recife-Brazil), on the situation of this viral disease in the state of Pernambuco in the four years. Read More

Hist Cienc Saude Manguinhos 2011 Jun;18(2):545-57

Programa de Pós-graduação em História das Ciências e da Saúde/Casa de Oswaldo Cruz/Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Nilópolis - RJ - Brasil.

Physician Joaquim Augusto Tanajura (1878-1941), head of health services for the Rondon Commission from 1909 to 1912, wrote a paper about the first scientific journeys sponsored by the Oswaldo Cruz Institute. Entitled "Região do Madeira: Santo Antônio," it was published in the newspaper Jornal do Commercio de Manáos on June 5, 1911, at a time when rediscovery of Brazil's sertões had just begun and indictments were starting to be lodged about the state of abandonment and disease in which the interior of the country lay. Through Doctor Tanajura's article, the present text analyzes both the engagement of members of the Rondon Commission in local political dynamics and the era's controversies about construction of the image of the sertão and its inhabitants.
