Background And Aims: Endoscopic forceps biopsy results that reflect the final pathologic results of an entire lesion are essential for making accurate diagnoses and appropriate therapeutic decisions for patients with superficial esophageal squamous neoplasms (SESNs). This study investigated the histopathologic discrepancies between endoscopic forceps biopsy and endoscopic resection specimens to elucidate the factors contributing to such discrepancies.
Methods: This retrospective observational study involved 77 patients (84 lesions) who underwent endoscopic resections for SESNs, between January 2005 and August 2017, at the Pusan National University Hospital. Read More

Despite the rise in incidence of adenocarcinoma, squamous cell cancer of the oesophagus remains the commonest cell type worldwide and is predominant in the East. Except for very early tumours where endoscopic therapy can be performed with curative intent, in more advanced but potentially curative cancers, treatment for mid and upper third tumours is primarily surgery with extended lymphadenectomy, together with multimodal therapies such as preoperative chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. Definitive chemoradiotherapy is utilized in those who decline surgery or in those who are unfit for major procedures. Read More

Worldwide, the standard treatment for locally advanced esophageal cancer with curative intent is perioperative chemotherapy or preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by open transthoracic esophagectomy (OTE) with gastric conduit reconstruction. Minimally invasive esophagectomy (MIE) was developed to improve the postoperative outcome by reducing the surgical trauma, with comparable short-term oncologic results. The respect of diet and lifestyle modifications could be associated with better improvement of laryngopharyngeal symptoms, perceptual dysphonia, and acoustic measurements. The potential positive impact of alkaline, protein, low-fat, low-acid diet could be explained by many physiological effects on esophageal sphincter tonicity, acid and pepsin productions, and gastric emptying time. Future controlled prospective studies are needed to confirm the potential key role of alkaline, protein, low-fat, low-acid diet and lifestyle modifications in the clinical improvement of patients with suspected LPR disease. Cancer/testis antigens (CTAs) are a large family of tumor-associated antigens expressed in human tumors of different histological origin, but not in normal tissues, with the exception of the testes and placenta. Numerous immunohistochemical studies have reported associations between CTA expression and a negative estrogen receptor (ER) status in breast tumors, and demonstrated that CTAs are frequently expressed in tumors with higher nuclear grade. The expression of CTAs has not been studied as extensively in ductal carcinoma (DCIS) as it has been in invasive breast cancer. Read More
