Objective: Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is the most common malignant tumour of the canine urinary tract. Previously, the mutation of the BRAF gene V595E was identified in approximately 85 % of canine TCC cases by DNA sequencing of TCC tumour cells, both in frozen and paraffin-embedded tissue sections, as well as in urine. The objective of this study was to establish these methods in cytological smears and to investigate the prevalence of BRAF mutation V595E in canine TCC in our cohort of patients. Read More

Different to spirituality, the placebo-effect is well operationalized. Against this background, an attempt is made to look at a possible phenomenological relationship between the therapeutic effectiveness of spirituality and placebo. Similar context influences as well as the possible common use of a phylogenetically well conserved protective route via the mesolimbic dopaminergic reward system are highlighted. Read More

Alcohol dependent patients represent a high-risk group for vitamin deficiency, which could lead to variable cognitive dysfunctions and, as an extreme example, to an amnestic-confabulatory syndrome. In this case report, we report about an alcohol dependent 58-year-old patient without focal neurological symptoms with an amnestic-confabulatory syndrome. After substitution of thiamine, vitamin B12 and folic acid, cognitive symptoms completely vanish within a 22-month period of observation. Read More

Fibrillarin (FBL) is a dual-function nucleolar protein that catalyzes 2'-O methylation of pre-rRNA and methylation of histone H2A at glutamine 104 (H2AQ104me). The mechanisms that regulate FBL activity are unexplored. Here, we show that FBL is acetylated at several lysine residues by the acetyltransferase CBP and deacetylated by SIRT7. Read More

The P-STS human ileal neuroendocrine tumor cells, as a model for gut enterochromaffin cells, are strongly and synergistically activated by histamine plus acetylcholine (ACh), presumably via histamine 4 receptors, and weakly activated by histamine alone. Sensing these signals, enterochromaffin cells could participate in intestinal intolerance or allergic reactions to food constituents associated with elevated histamine levels. In this study we aimed to analyze the underlying molecular mechanisms. Read More

In a recent report (Nature 2018, 560, 336), room-temperature vertical ferroelectricity was experimentally shown in WTe2 bilayer, while its mechanism of ferroelectric switching without vertical ion displacements remains unclarified. In this work we reveal its origin by first-principles calculations that the polarization stems from uncompensated interlayer vertical charge transfer depending on in-plane translation, which can be switched upon interlayer sliding. The calculated results are consistent with experimental data, and similar switching mechanism can be applied to multilayer counterpart. Read More

The interaction of amino acids with metal electrodes plays a crucial role in bioelectrochemistry and the emerging field of bionanoelectronics. Here we present benchmark calculations of the adsorption structure and energy of all natural amino acids on Au(111) in vacuum using a van-der-Waals density functional (revPBE-vdW) that showed good performance on the S22 set of weakly bound dimers (mean relative unsigned error (MRUE) wrt CCSD(T)/CBS = 13.3%) and adsorption energies of small organic molecules on Au(111) (MRUE wrt experiment = 11. The London - van der Waals (L-vdW) force between a particle and a surface strongly depends on the topography and the chemical properties of the interacting surfaces. While a great deal of work has been done to understand the effect of topographical heterogeneity on the L-vdW adhesion, the role of chemical heterogeneity has been discussed only rarely. This study makes an attempt to quantify the magnitude and range of the L-vdW force acting on a spherical particle in the vicinity of a chemically patterned surface. Read More

On the basis of DFT calculations, a mechanism is proposed involving formal [4 + 1] cycloaddition of isocyanides, followed by imine-enamine tautomerization and air oxidation. Read More

With its "Münsteraner Memorandum on Alternative Practitioners" the author collective "Münsteraner Kreis" has recently criticized current German double standards for physicians versus alternative practitioners with regard to minimal competency and to quality assurance. The authors' main goal was to attract attention to the problem and to provide systematic arguments in favor of a healthcare system that is serving patients' needs more appropriately. Reactions to the Memorandum were numerous, divergent in their evaluations, often constructive, and frequently emotionally heated. Read More

Purpose: Acute meniscus repair in young athletes is always a challenge due to the long rehabilitation process and time to return to sport (RTS). The purpose was to investigate signal alterations in short-term follow-up after acute meniscus repair on specific magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan sequences. It was hypothesized that (1) MRI signal changes over the first postoperative healing phase and represent a continuous healing process and (2) meniscus healing properties correlates with clinical outcomes and RTS. Electrochemical intercalation of ions into the van der Waals gap of two-dimensional (2D) layered materials is a promising low-temperature synthesis strategy to tune their physical and chemical properties. It is widely believed that ions prefer intercalation into the van der Waals gap through the edges of the 2D flake, which generally causes wrinkling and distortion. Here we demonstrate that the ions can also intercalate through the top surface of few-layer MoS and this type of intercalation is more reversible and stable compared to the intercalation through the edges. Rinsing wounds with wound cleansing solutions has long been a recognised cornerstone in wound management as a means of removing cell debris and surface pathogens in wound exudates. In combination with surgical debridement and topical negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT), this can facilitate the intended progression from the inflammatory to the proliferative phase of wound healing. Procedures of topical negative pressure wound therapy with instillation and a defined exposure/dwell-time of topical solutions under cyclic compression and decompression with foam dressings (NPWTi-d) can remove cellular remnants and debris that may inhibit the healing process. The surface property of growth substrate imposes significant influence in the growth behaviors of 2D materials. Rhenium disulfide (ReS ) is a new family of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides with unique distorted 1T crystal structure and thickness-independent direct bandgap. The role of growth substrate is more critical for ReS owing to its weak interlayer coupling property, which leads to preferred growth along the out-of-plane direction while suppressing the uniform in-plane growth.
