Noroviruses are a leading cause of epidemic and pandemic acute gastroenteritis (AGE) worldwide, and contaminated food and water are important routes for its transmission. Raw sewage has been used for viral surveillance to monitor the emergence of new norovirus strains with the potential to cause epidemics. In this study, we investigated norovirus occurrence and norovirus RNA levels in 156 samples collected from May 2013 to May 2014, across three different stages (52 samples each) of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Drug repurposing is an unconventional drug discovery approach to explore new therapeutic benefits of existing, shelved and the drugs in clinical trials. This approach is currently emerging to overcome the bottleneck constraints faced during traditional drug discovery in grounds of financial support, timeline and resources. In this direction, several efforts were made for the construction of stratagems based on bioinformatics and computational tools to intensify the repurposing process off-late. Read More

Glycyrrhizin, a triterpenoid compound, has been reported to be an anti-inflammatory agent for the treatment of a variety of inflammatory diseases including hepatitis. However, the mechanism by which glycyrrhizin inhibits inflammation is unclear. Using a Con A-induced hepatitis model in mice, we found that administration of glycyrrhizin ameliorates Con A-induced liver injury, which manifests as reduction in the production of inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, IL-6 and IL-17, as well as serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Flow-cytometric detection of now termed measurable residual disease (MRD) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has proven to have an independent prognostic impact. It has, however, not been demonstrated whether the use of the defined LAIPs in the same multicenter setting results in a high concordance between centers in MRD assessment. Read More

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) are a relatively new class of drug that plays an important role in the epigenetic and non-epigenetic regulation in cancer, inducing death, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in cancer cells. Although HDACi are approved only for hematologic malignancies, there are several trials in the breast cancer setting with promising results. In this review, we summarize the latest studies with HDACi in breast cancer from the emerging data in the translational research until its possible applicability in the clinical practice. Read More

Stable isotope labeled (SIL) compounds have been commonly used as internal standards (IS) to ensure the accuracy and quality of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) bioanalytical assays. Recently, the application of SIL drugs and LC-MS assays to microdose absolute bioavailability (BA) studies has gained increasing attention. This approach can provide significant cost and time saving, and higher data quality compared to the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS)-based method, since it avoids the use of radioactive drug, high-cost AMS instrumentation and complex measurement processes.
