A combined nasolabial and infra-nasal bi-lobe flap design with double transposition for reconstruction of the ipsilateral upper and lower lips associated with the commissure defect.

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2019 Dec 14;9(4):29. Epub 2019 Nov 14.

Department of Oral Maxillofacial Head and Neck Oncology Surgery, School, and Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China - The State Key Laboratory Breeding Base of Basic Science of Stomatology & Key Laboratory of Oral Biomedicine Ministry of Education, School & Hospital of Stomatology, Wuhan University, Wuhan 430079, China.

Several classical flap variations have been designed to reconstruct lip and commissure defects. Although most of these variations maybe the best option for repairing defects, there is an increasing risk of anatomic distortion and functional disability, mostly in older persons. Herein, we present a combined nasolabial and infra-nasal bi-lobe flap design with double transposition, which was used to concomitantly close the upper and lower lips associated with commissure defects. The RNA degradation pathway is involved in PPARα-modulated anti-oral tumorigenesis.

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2019 Dec 14;9(4):27. Epub 2019 Nov 14.

Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, China Medical University, Taichung 404, Taiwan.

Background: The activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) has been shown to reprogram tumor metabolism and exhibits great potential for treating anti-oral tumorigenesis.

Methods: In this study, we used a pathway-based strategy to explore possible functional pathways involved in the anticancer activity of PPARα in oral cancer cells through next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatic approaches.

Results: We found that 3919 genes were upregulated and 1060 genes were downregulated through PPARα activation. Read More

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2019 Dec 14;9(4):22. Epub 2019 Nov 14.

Gastrointestinal and Liver Diseases Research Center, Guilan University of Medical Sciences, Rasht, Iran.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is distinguished by epigenetic elements like DNA methylation, histone modification, histone acetylation and RNA remodeling which is related with genomic instability and tumor initiation. Correspondingly, as a main epigenetic regulation, DNA methylation has an impressive ability in order to be used in CRC targeted therapy. Meaningly, DNA methylation is identified as one of most important epigenetic regulators in gene expression and is considered as a notable potential driver in tumorigenesis and carcinogenesis through gene-silencing of tumor suppressors genes. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) most commonly occurs in the cervical spine, usually involving two to three segments; however, the disease has the potential to occur anywhere in the spine. We encountered a fifty-one year old male with progressive unsteadiness and bilateral lower limb weakness for a period of six months which eventually became worse resulting in inability to walk without assistance. Neurological examination revealed normal upper limb function; however, the lower limbs demonstrated motor dysfunction. Read More

Will deep brain stimulation increase the incidence of induced psychosis? Post-operation follow-ups for 1 hundred patients from 2004-2017.

Paul-Jer Chen

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2018 Dec 26;8(4):21. Epub 2018 Nov 26.

Department of Neurosurgery, China Medical University Hospital, China Medical University, Taichung 404, Taiwan.

Generally regarding as a safe treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD) for the past 20 years, deep brain stimulation (DBS) is also an example of precision medicine where surgeons need to titrate individual patient's stimulating electrodes one by one down to the scale of micrometer for the maximum therapeutic effect. In order to prevent operation induced psychiatric complications and minimize any other potential side effects, we have followed 103 patients received this treatment provided by a single surgeon in the same medical institution from 2004 to 2017. We identified each patient complaint from nursing care records and complication data from medical charts during the perioperative hospitalization period to see if any of them correlate statistical significantly with the DBS lead placement procedure. Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) triggers mitochondria-mediated apoptotic machinery in human cisplatin-resistant oral cancer CAR cells.

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2018 Sep 24;8(3):15. Epub 2018 Aug 24.

Department of Pharmacy and Master Program, Tajen University, Pingtung 907, Taiwan.

Benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC), a component of dietary food, possesses a powerful anticancer activity. Previous studies have shown that BITC produces a large number of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increases intracellular Ca release from endoplasmic reticulum (ER), leading to the activation of the apoptotic mechanism in tumor cells. However, there is not much known regarding the inhibitory effect of BITC on cisplatin-resistant oral cancer cells. Read More

Mechanical stretch and chronotherapeutic techniques for progenitor cell transplantation and biomaterials.

Biomedicine (Taipei) 2018 Sep 24;8(3):14. Epub 2018 Aug 24.

School of Science and Technology, Nottingham Trent University, Clifton Campus, College Drive, Nottingham, UK, NG11 8NS.

In the body, mesenchymal progenitor cells are subjected to a substantial amount external force from different mechanical stresses, each potentially influences their behaviour and maintenance differentially. Tensile stress, or compression loading are just two of these forces, and here we examine the role of cyclical or dynamic mechanical loading on progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation, as well as on other cellular processes including cell morphology, apoptosis and matrix mineralisation. Moreover, we also examine how mechanical stretch can be used to optimise and ready biomaterials before their implantation, and examine the role of the circadian rhythm, the body's innate time keeping system, on biomaterial delivery and acceptance.
