[Discussions regarding the reconstruction of the significance of leprosy in the post-sulfone period, Minas Gerais, in the 1950s].

Hist Cienc Saude Manguinhos 2015 Jan-Apr;22(2):541-58. Epub 2014 Dec 19.

Universidade Federal dos Vales do Jequitinhonha e Mucuri, Diamantina, MG, Brasil,

From a historical viewpoint, all the elements surrounding a disease, from its name to the weight of meaning attached to it, are the result of "negotiations" in which many sections of society are participants. In the case of leprosy, the discovery of sulfones in 1941 made a significant contribution towards transforming our understanding of this disease, leading to questions being raised as to the measures adopted for its prevention and control, particularly the compulsory isolation of sufferers. On the basis of these assumptions, this article examines the debate which took place regarding the process whereby the old prophylactic procedures for the control of leprosy were replaced, in an important national journal, Arquivos Mineiros de Leprologia, in the 1950s. This analysis of the history of the Laboratório de Biologia Infantil (Children's Biology Laboratory) discusses topics related to childhood and adolescence published in the Arquivos de Medicina Legal e Identificação do Rio de Janeiro. It underscores the political-institutional and intellectual contexts that prompted the 1930s debate about childhood among physicians, teachers, educators, and politicians, with a special focus on Leonídio Ribeiro, founder and first editor of the journal. The Laboratório inaugurated a medical and scientific routine for studying, treating, and providing assistance within institutions that had been created to repress, care for, and cure, and as such it represented an important chapter in the history of so-called abandoned and delinquent childhood.
