Impact of FTO SNPs and in Prostate Cancer Severity in a Cohort of Puerto Rican Men.

Arch Cancer Res 2017 22;5(3). Epub 2017 Aug 22.

School of Health Professions, University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA.

Background: Obesity is prevalent in PR and has been associated with prostate cancer (PCa) mortality and aggressiveness. Polymorphisms (SNPs) and in the FTO gene have been associated with both obesity and PCa. The aim of this work was to ascertain whether the presence of these SNPs is associated with PCa risk and severity in a cohort of Puerto Rican men. Read More

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma: A Critical Review of the Role of Surgery for Resection.

Arch Cancer Res 2016 27;4(2). Epub 2016 May 27.

Department of Neurological Surgery, Columbia University Medical Center, New York, NY 10032 USA.

Background: Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) are rare CNS tumors that carry a poor prognosis, with most patients suffering recurrence. Progress has been made in the treatment of this pathology, notably with the widespread use of systemic high dose methotrexate. However, unlike most other malignant CNS neoplasms, surgery for cytoreduction is not routinely performed for this disease, mainly as a result of negative experiences decades ago. Read More

A Rare Consequence of Chronic Graft Versus Host Disease - Peyronie's Disease.

Arch Cancer Res 2015;3(2)

Hematology Branch, NHLBI, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA.

Chronic graft versus host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) may involve any organ system, but male genital involvement is rare. Peyronie's Disease (PD) is an acquired, localized fibrotic disorder of the tunica albuginea, which leads to penile deformity, pain, and eventually to erectile dysfunction. We report the case of a 52 year old African American male with Acute Myeloid Leukemia who underwent human leucocyte antigen (HLA) matched sibling allogeneic peripheral blood SCT. Read More

Clinical Challenges to Current Molecularly Targeted Therapies in Lung Cancer.

Arch Cancer Res 2015;3(3)

Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Illinois College of Medicine, Rockford, Illinois, USA.

Lung cancer is difficult to treat with a poor prognosis and a five year survival of 15%. Current molecularly targeted therapies are initially effective in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients; however, they are plagued with difficulties including induced resistance and small therapeutically responsive populations. This mini review describes the mechanism of resistance to several molecularly targeted therapies which are currently being used to treat NSCLC. Read More
