Overexpressing Histone Deacetylase 5 in Rat Dorsal Striatum Alters Reward-Guided Decision-Making and Associated Neural Encoding.

J Neurosci 2021 12 29;41(49):10080-10090. Epub 2021 Oct 29.

Department of Psychology, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland 20742

Accumulating evidence in the past decade implicates histone-modifying enzymes, such as class I histone deacetylases (HDACs), in learning and memory and, recently, habit formation. However, it is unclear whether HDACs play roles in complex cognitive function. To address this issue, we examined the role of dorsal striatal HDAC5, a class II HDAC, in reward-guided decision-making and associated neural encoding in rats. Read More

Factors modulating the incubation of drug and non-drug craving and their clinical implications.

Neurosci Biobehav Rev 2021 12 28;131:847-864. Epub 2021 Sep 28.

Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy; Santa Lucia Foundation (IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia), Rome, Italy. Electronic address:

It was suggested in 1986 that cue-induced cocaine craving increases progressively during early abstinence and remains high during extended periods of time. Clinical evidence now supports this hypothesis and that this increase is not specific to cocaine but rather generalize across several drugs of abuse. Investigators have identified an analogous incubation phenomenon in rodents, in which time-dependent increases in cue-induced drug seeking are observed after abstinence from intravenous drug or palatable food self-administration. Methamphetamine seeking after prolonged abstinence is associated with activated projections from anterior intralaminar nucleus of thalamus to dorsolateral striatum in female rats.

Pharmacol Biochem Behav 2021 01 11;200:173087. Epub 2020 Dec 11.

Department of Psychology, University of Maryland College Park, College Park, MD 20742, United States of America. Electronic address:

Methamphetamine (Meth) seeking progressively increases after cessation from drug self-administration (incubation of Meth craving). We have previously shown that both dorsomedial and dorsolateral striatum (DMS and DLS) play critical roles in this incubation in male rats. Moreover, our recent anatomical tracing study examined afferent projections into DMS and demonstrated a novel role of projections from anterior intralaminar nucleus of thalamus (AIT) to DMS in incubation of Meth craving in male rats. Epigenetic Mechanisms in Drug Relapse.

Biol Psychiatry 2021 02 14;89(4):331-338. Epub 2020 Aug 14.

Department of Psychology, University of Maryland College Park, College Park, Maryland. Electronic address:

A growing body of evidence from the past 15 years implicates epigenetic mechanisms in the behavioral effects of addictive drugs. The main focus of these studies has been epigenetic mechanisms of psychomotor sensitization and drug reinforcement, as assessed by the conditioned place preference and drug self-administration procedures. Some of these studies have documented long-lasting changes in the expression of epigenetic enzymes and molecules that persist for weeks after the last drug exposure. Read More

[Organ donor families should be free to meet their recipients under controlled conditions if both sides wish, Italian National Committee for Bioethics says (Italian translation by A. Scarabelli)].

G Ital Nefrol 2019 Dec 9;36(6). Epub 2019 Dec 9.

Presidente della "Nicholas Green Foundation", La Canada, CA, USA.

On 27 September 2018 the Italian Committee for Bioethics (ICB) adopted an opinion regarding the possibility of an exception to the anonymity obligation when both parties agree and have signed an appropriate informed consent form. According to the IBC any contact between the donor's family and recipient must be managed by a third-party body pertaining to the National Health Service, established to guarantee strict control over the expression of consent in order to avoid any risk of inappropriate behaviour. The paper traces how Reg and Maggie Green, on holiday from California, donated the organs of their seven-year old son, Nicholas, to seven Italians after he had been shot in a carjacking on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway in 1994. Secukinumab for Psoriasis in Obese Patients: Minireview and Clinical Experience.

Case Rep Dermatol 2019 Sep-Dec;11(Suppl 1):29-36. Epub 2019 Sep 23.

Department of Health Sciences, A. Avogadro University of Eastern Piedmont, Novara, Italy.

Psoriasis (PsO) has been associated with obesity, and its severity increases in obese subjects. The link between psoriatic condition and obesity is based on shared pathophysiological pathways where local and systemic inflammation promote each other; PsO is an inflammatory, immune-mediated disease, and the adipose tissue is the source of proinflammatory adipokines. Moreover, psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an important comorbidity of PsO that reduces quality of life and makes difficult the patient's management. Read More

Rules to be adopted for publishing a scientific paper.

Authors:
Nicola Picardi

Ann Ital Chir 2016 ;87:1-3

The main question to ask himself when preparing to write an article is "why publish a scientific paper?" First of all to publish an own article qualifies his author - or authors - as "scientist". Because the surgery is a mixture of art and knowledge, which coexist and interreact mutually increasing each other, scientific publications are the world where ideas are shared. Secondly, to an academic career is essential to be Author of scientific publications; but also for those who follow an hospital career or simply exercise the surgical profession in other contexts it represents the opportunity to communicate their experience and give a personal contribution to the knowledge of the art. In nearly three decades to the direction of the journal Annali Italiani di Chirurgia I could add to my personal experiences as surgeon and University Professor of Surgery, those very special in the rather different field of scientific literature from the specific point of view of Chief Editor - English term that identifies the "Director" of a scientific journal. The original wish to enhance and promote the qualities of researches and professional activity of Italian surgery within the journal, after an initial phase of normal management has expanded ambitiously, and over the last decade has been taken new editorial strategic decisions to promote more and more the cultural value and the diffusion of the magazine, for the benefit of its subscribers and its readers. Therefore, since 2007 the preferential adoption of English was introduced, then it became the exclusive language from 2010. Read More

“Opposite semilunar” variant of Burow triangle in rotation and advancement flaps.

J Craniofac Surg 2011 Nov;22(6):2193-4

Dermatological Clinic, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Piemonte Orientale A Avogadro, Novara, Italy.

The Burow triangle is an expedient suitably conceived either to facilitate sliding of the flap and avoid folds due to differences in skin distension or to correct coaptation of 2 cutting edges with a different length. In some cases, the triangle cannot be drawn in the right position either because of a particular anatomic site, for example, in proximity to commissures and openings, or because it is contraindicated to avoid unwelcome scar lines. In these cases, a semilunar ablation opposite to the direction of Burow triangle could be a valuable alternative. Read More
