An Pediatr (Barc) 2019 Feb 13. Epub 2019 Feb 13.

Sección de Neuropediatría, Hospital Materno Infantil Gregorio Marañón, Madrid, España.

Introduction: Continuous spikes and waves during slow sleep (CSWS) is an EEG pattern that appears during childhood, and is often associated with cognitive impairment. It can appear in the course of epileptic syndromes, as well as in benign epilepsy. The aim of this study is to analyse epidemiological and clinical characteristic of patients with CSWS, in order to describe possible predictive factors in their outcome. Read More

[Rebound (reactive) thymic hyperplasia after chemotherapy in children with lymphoma].

An Pediatr (Barc) 2019 Jan 31. Epub 2019 Jan 31.

Departamento de Oncología Clínica, Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de El Mansura, El Mansura, Egipto.

Introduction: Thymic regrowth after chemotherapy treatment has been reported in children with lymphoma, and in order to avoid misdiagnosing these cases as relapses, physicians should become familiar with rebound (reactive) thymic hyperplasia (RTH) and remain aware of its possible occurrence. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of RTH in children with lymphoma after completion of chemotherapy and to evaluate the clinical characteristics, outcomes, and the findings of computed tomography (CT) and gallium-67 (GA-67) scans in these patients.

Patients And Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study by reviewing the health records of children with a lymphoma diagnosis managed at an outpatient paediatric oncology clinic in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Read More

Sección de Endocrinología Pediátrica, Centro Clínico de Seguimiento de Endocrinopatías Congénitas, Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid, Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón, Madrid, España.

The screening program of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) is probably one of the best achievements in paediatrics. Thyroid hormones are essential for brain development and brain maturation that continue through the neonatal period. Hypothyroidism that begins in the first months of life causes irreversible damage to the central nervous system, and is one of the most frequent and preventable causes of mental retardation. As patients might be seen by professionals from different specialties and levels of expertise, a great variability in diagnostic procedures and disease monitoring is commonly observed. Therefore, four scientific societies involved in its management have developed a consensus document providing specific recommendations related to its prevention, diagnosis, treatment and follow up. División de Ciencias Naturales y Exactas, Campus Guanajuato, Universidad de Guanajuato, Guanajuato, México. Electronic address:

Introduction: Several studies have shown the presence of fluorosis (DF) in primary dentition, suggesting an exposure to fluorides (F) in early childhood. Breast milk is recommended as an exclusive food until 6 months of age. Although it is mentioned that only a small amount of F can be eliminated by breast milk, studies have shown the presence of this element in milk of women living in contaminated areas, as well as in infant formulas. An Pediatr (Barc) 2019 Jan;90(1):56.e1-56.e9

Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Madrid, España; Facultad de Medicina, Departamento de Pediatría, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España.

The Advisory Committee on Vaccines of the Spanish Association of Paediatrics annually publishes the immunisation schedule considered optimal for children resident in Spain, according to available evidence on current vaccines. As regards funded immunisations, the 2+1 strategy (2, 4, 11 months) with hexavalent (DTPa-IPV-Hib-HB) and 13-valent pneumococcal vaccines are recommended. Administration of the 6-year booster dose with DTPa is recommended, with a poliomyelitis dose for children who had received the 2+1 scheme, as well as Tdap vaccine for adolescents and pregnant women in every pregnancy between 27 and 32 weeks gestation. Newborn screening (NBS) for cystic fibrosis (CF) is well-established in many countries and provides the opportunity for an early diagnosis and treatment before the development of irreversible structural lung damage. In 1999, Catalonia, Castilla-León, and the Balearic Islands started the NBS programme for CF. In the last 10 years its implementation rapidly spread and all the autonomies offer the NBS programme for CF since 2015. Read More

An Pediatr (Barc) 2019 Feb 24;90(2):125.e1-125.e12. Epub 2018 Dec 24.

Grupo de Investigación de Enfermedades Raras, Laboratorio de (Epi)Genética Molecular, Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria BioAraba, OSI Araba-Txagorritxu, Vitoria-Gasteiz, España.

Since Albright and co-workers described pseudohypoparathyroidism in 1942 as the combined presence of hypocalcaemia and hyperphosphataemia associated with the existence of tissue resistance to parathyroid hormone (PTH) action upon normal renal function, great advances have been made in the clinical and genetic profile of patients affected by this condition. Furthermore, not only have genetic bases of pseudohypoparathyroidism been unravelled, but also variants in other genes involved in the PTH/PTHrP signalling pathway through Gsα, have been identified as the cause of diseases that share clinical features with pseudohypoparathyroidism. In the paediatric setting, the first symptoms suggesting the impairment of this signalling pathway are the presence of subcutaneous ossifications, brachydactyly and/or early onset obesity, followed by the possible development of PTH resistance. In a world that is increasingly technological and interconnected, but also more violent, overexploited and polluted, Paediatric Environmental Health (PEH) is one of the best contributions to improve global health. Few areas of the planet have a high affinity with common values and interests, such as the European Union (EU), Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The investments and actions of the PEH in pre- and postnatal periods during the first two decades of life will generate countless benefits in the health and well-being during the human life span. [Plagiarism and predatory journals: A threat to scientific integrity].

An Pediatr (Barc) 2019 Jan 27;90(1):57.e1-57.e8. Epub 2018 Nov 27.

Departamento de Historia de la Ciencia y Documentación, Facultad de Medicina, Universitat de València, Valencia, España. Electronic address:

This article presents an analysis of the concept of plagiarism in order to show the wide spectrum of manifestations that can be considered as such when committing a transgression of intellectual property, carried out with the intention of deceiving the authors' true contribution and the originality and novelty of the information. The article describes the concurrent circumstances in intentional plagiarism, and the damage that this misconduct causes in the credibility of the scientific system, in which authorship credit is the foundation of the academic career, of the prestige of the author in the scientific community, and the basis for research funding. Some circumstances are favouring this fraud: the pressure exerted on researchers by the criteria used for promotion and reward that prioritise the quantity of works on their quality, the existence of a market for the purchase and sale of scientific articles, and the proliferation of predatory journals that operate without or minimal ethical standards.
