HIV-Infected Patients With Anal Cancer Precursors: Clinicopathological Characteristics and Human Papillomavirus Subtype Distribution.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 Jul;63(7):890-896

Division of Infectious Diseases, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New York.

Background: People living with HIV have high rates of anal human papillomavirus infection and anal precancer/cancer.

Objective: This study aims to: 1) determine human papillomavirus subtype distribution among people living with HIV with anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions; 2) compare the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions by human papillomavirus 16 status; and 3) investigate high-risk human papillomavirus negative anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cases.

Design: In this retrospective study, 700 people living with HIV who have biopsy-proven anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions were reviewed for demographics, cytological diagnoses, and human papillomavirus testing results for human papillomavirus 16, 18, and 12 other high-risk types. Comparison of Ligation of the Intersphincteric Fistula Tract and BioLIFT for the Treatment of Transsphincteric Anal Fistula: A Retrospective Analysis.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 03;63(3):365-370

Department of Surgery, The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract is a sphincter-preserving technique for the treatment of anal fistulas. The BioLIFT modification involves the placement of a biologic mesh in the intersphincteric plane. Advocates of this modification state improved healing rates, however evidence for this is lacking, and this approach costs significantly more. Read More

Molecular phylogeny and evolution of internal fertilization in South American seasonal cynopoeciline killifishes.

Mol Phylogenet Evol 2016 Feb 28;95:94-9. Epub 2015 Nov 28.

Laboratory of Systematics and Evolution of Teleost Fishes, Institute of Biology, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Caixa Postal 68049, CEP 21944-970 Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. Electronic address:

Internal fertilization is a widespread mode of reproduction in chondrichthyans and tetrapods, but uncommon in actinopterygian fishes. In killifishes of the suborder Aplocheiloidei, internal fertilization is restricted to two genera, Campellolebias and Cynopoecilus, both containing species adapted to life in seasonal pools of subtropical South America and exhibiting elaborated inseminating structures. Phylogenetic studies involving these genera are scarce and limited to morphological characters and fragments of mitochondrial DNA sequences available for a few taxa, providing incongruent results and thus impeding hypotheses on the evolution of insemination and related morphological traits.
