Using fisher-contributed secondary fins to fill critical shark-fisheries data gaps.

Conserv Biol 2021 Feb 4. Epub 2021 Feb 4.

Institute of Envrironment, Department of Biological Sciences, Florida International University, 3000 NE 151st Street, North Miami, FL, 33181, USA.

Developing-world shark fisheries are typically not assessed or actively managed for sustainability; one fundamental obstacle is the lack of species and size-composition catch data. We tested and implemented a new and potentially widely applicable approach for collecting these data: mandatory submission of low-value secondary fins (anal fins) from landed sharks by fishers and use of the fins to reconstruct catch species and size. Visual and low-cost genetic identification were used to determine species composition, and linear regression was applied to total length and anal fin base length for catch-size reconstruction. Abnormal Neuronal Response to Rectal and Anal Stimuli in Patients Treated for Distal Rectal Cancer With High-Dose Chemoradiotherapy Followed By Watchful Waiting.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 09;63(9):1234-1241

Department of Surgery, Aarhus University Hospital, Aarhus, Denmark.

Background: Watchful waiting in patients with rectal cancer with complete clinical response after chemoradiation therapy has gained increased popularity to avoid morbidity and mortality associated with surgery. Irradiation of the pelvis causes bowel dysfunction, but the effect on anorectal sensory function remains obscure in this patient category.

Objective: The aim of this study was to characterize the sensory pathways of the gut-brain axis in patients with rectal cancer treated solely with chemoradiation therapy (nonconventional regime/dose) compared with healthy volunteers. Read More

Video-Assisted Ligation of Intersphincteric Fistula Tract for Complex Anal Fistula: Technique and Preliminary Outcomes.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 11;63(11):1534-1540

Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand.

Background: Sphincter-preserving operations have been increasingly used for treating anal fistula. However, their success rates remain modest in complex anal fistulas.

Objective: This study aimed to report outcomes of video-assisted ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract (a procedure combining video-assisted anal fistula treatment and ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract) for treating complex anal fistulas and to compare its results with conventional ligation of intersphincteric fistula tract. Dis Colon Rectum 2020 08;63(8):1102-1107

Department of Surgery, New York University Langone Health, New York, New York.

Background: Modality of index IPAA creation may affect the results after redo IPAA surgery for IPAA failure. To our knowledge, there is no study evaluating the effects of modality of index IPAA creation on redo IPAA outcomes.

Objective: This study aimed to compare short- and long-term outcomes of transabdominal redo IPAA surgery for failed minimally invasive IPAA and open IPAA. Read More

Ileorectal Anastomosis Versus IPAA for the Surgical Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis: A Markov Decision Analysis.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 09;63(9):1276-1284

Department of Surgery, Linköping University Hospital, and Division of Surgery, Department of Experimental Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden.

Background: Ileorectal anastomosis in patients with ulcerative colitis results in decreased postoperative morbidity and better functional outcome but leads to increased risk for rectal cancer compared with IPAA.

Objective: This study aims to compare ileorectal anastomosis with IPAA in ulcerative colitis by using a decision model.

Design: A Markov simulation model was designed to simulate clinical events of ileorectal anastomosis and IPAA over a time horizon of 40 years with time cycles of 1 year. Read More

HIV-Infected Patients With Anal Cancer Precursors: Clinicopathological Characteristics and Human Papillomavirus Subtype Distribution.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 07;63(7):890-896

Division of Infectious Diseases, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New York.

Background: People living with HIV have high rates of anal human papillomavirus infection and anal precancer/cancer.

Objective: This study aims to: 1) determine human papillomavirus subtype distribution among people living with HIV with anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions; 2) compare the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions by human papillomavirus 16 status; and 3) investigate high-risk human papillomavirus negative anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion cases.

Design: In this retrospective study, 700 people living with HIV who have biopsy-proven anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions were reviewed for demographics, cytological diagnoses, and human papillomavirus testing results for human papillomavirus 16, 18, and 12 other high-risk types. Comparison of Ligation of the Intersphincteric Fistula Tract and BioLIFT for the Treatment of Transsphincteric Anal Fistula: A Retrospective Analysis.

Dis Colon Rectum 2020 03;63(3):365-370

Department of Surgery, The Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Background: Ligation of the intersphincteric fistula tract is a sphincter-preserving technique for the treatment of anal fistulas. The BioLIFT modification involves the placement of a biologic mesh in the intersphincteric plane. Advocates of this modification state improved healing rates, however evidence for this is lacking, and this approach costs significantly more. Read More
