Evaluation of an experimental remineralizing agent for repairing enamel surfaces.

Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Facultad de Ciencias, Departamento de Química, Bogotá DC, Colombia.

The best material for repairing enamel surface defects is one very similar to the original enamel and which interacts with natural remineralization mechanisms. It does not repair extensive damage, so in order to fill large defects, external help is required using phosphocalcic ceramic composites that activate salivary remineralization efficiently though on smaller in scale. Effective adhesion of the repair may depend on the amount of aqueous fluids present in the enamel, which apparently enable nucleation and growth of new minerals to ensure adhesion and stability. Evaluation of pH and calcium ion diffusion from calcium hydroxide pastes and MTA.

Acta Odontol Latinoam 2017 Apr;30(1):26-32

Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Facultad de Odontología, Cátedra de Endodoncia, Tucumán, Argentina.

The aim of this ex vivo study was to evaluate changes in pH and calcium ion diffusion through root dentin from calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) ) and mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) pastes at 7, 30 and 60 days; and the relationship between pH and ion diffusion. Thirty-two human premolars were used. Crowns were sectioned and root canals instrumented and filled in with the following preparations: 1) Ca(OH) + distilled water (n=7); 2) Ca(OH) + 0. Read More

Surface detail reproduction and dimensional accuracy of molds: influence of disinfectant solutions and elastomeric impression materials.

Acta Odontol Latinoam 2017 Apr;30(1):13-18

Departamento de Odontologia Restauradora, Faculdade de Odontologia de Piracicaba, Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP, Piracicaba, SP, Brasil.

This study compared the surface detail reproduction and dimensional accuracy of molds after disinfection using 2% sodium hypochlorite, 2% chlorhexidine digluconate or 0.2% peracetic acid to those of molds that were not disinfected, for four elastomeric impression materials: polysulfide (Light Bodied Permlastic), polyether (Impregum Soft), polydimethylsiloxane (Oranwash L) andpolyvinylsiloxane (Aquasil Ultra LV). The molds were prepared on a matrix by applying pressure, using a perforated metal tray. Read More

Effect of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) on the dentin-pulp complex: ex vivo histological analysis on human primary teeth and rat molars.

Acta Odontol Latinoam 2017 Apr;30(1):5-12

Universidad de Buenos Aires, Facultad de Odontología, Cátedra de Materiales Dentales.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of SDF on the dentin-pulp complex using two models: teeth after SDF application (ex vivo) and experimental animal molars. A descriptive study was performed using two models. In the first model, primary teeth (ex vivo) with enamel-dentin caries, without pulp involvement and previously treated with 38% SDF, were evaluated by means of two techniques: (a) Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray detector (EDS) to determine qualitative and quantitative composition, and (b) brightfield optical microscopy (OM) after decalcification. Efectiveness of the waveone and ProTaper D systems for removing gutta-percha with or without a solvent.

Acta Odontol Latinoam 2016 Dec;29(3):262-267

Department of Endodontics, Dental Research Center, São Leopoldo Mandic University, Campinas, SP, Brazil.

Endodontic retreatment requires complete removal of the filling material and access to the apical foramen. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Wave One reciprocating system and compare it to the ProTaper D rotarysystem, with or without the use of a solvent, in removing filling material from root canals. The time required for each filling removal technique employed was also determined and compared. Read More

Acta Odontol Latinoam 2016 Dec;29(3):239-247

Schoolof Dentistry, Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the contamination rate of intra and extraoral digital X ray equipment in a dental radiology clinic at a public educational institution. Samples were collected on three different days, at two times in the day: in the morning, before attending patients, and at the end of the day, after appointment hours and before cleaning and disinfection procedures. Samples were collected from the periapical X-ray machine (tube head, positioning device, control panel and activator button), the panoramic X- ray machine (temporal support, bite block, control panel and activator button), the intraoral digital system (sensor), and the digital system computers (keyboard and mouse).
